Why Waste Money On Bottled Water When Tap Water Is Mostly Free

News of anything being contaminated is never a good thing, especially if it’s something as common as bottled water.

Remember those articles telling you to cut carbonated and sugary drinks they were bad for you? Looks like they may be wrong after all.

Because it turns out bottled water could be a lot worse — after news of it being contaminated with harmful plastic particles washed across the Internet.

And Singaporeans’ reaction to this were interesting, to say the least.

You’ll see what we mean.

Bottled water worldwide contaminated

On Wednesday (14 Mar), news broke that bottled water from the world’s leading brands were found to be contaminated with tiny plastic particles.

You might wanna ease up on the water there.

These particles were suspected to have seeped in during the packaging process, according to the study which tested 250 bottles of water from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Thailand and the United States.

These brands include:

  • Aqua
  • Aquafina
  • Dasani
  • Evian
  • Nestle Pure Life
  • San Pellegrino

Plastic particles such as polypropylene, nylon, and polyethylene terephthalate were found in 93% of the samples.

Sherri Manson – a microplastic researcher at State University of New York at Fredonia – explained the harmful effects of these particles.

There are connections to increases in certain kinds of cancer to lower sperm count to increases in conditions like ADHD and autism.

So how exactly is this related to Singapore anyway? We weren’t even among the countries tested.

Turns out that in 2015, Singaporeans consumed $134 million worth on bottled water — even though the quality of our tap water greatly exceeds minimum World Health Organization (WHO) and US Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Are you afraid now?

Singaporeans remain undeterred

Apparently, Singaporeans aren’t too concerned over the contamination.

One even questioned the study’s claim that tap water is safer to consume than their bottled counterparts.

Others simply stated that they’ll consume tap water instead.

While some may consider this mindset ignorant, we see it as them having faith in the Singapore’s treatment of water.

Then again, you have people like this that choose to look on the brighter side of things.

And of course, you have Singaporeans who are always up to date with the latest news.

Singaporeans are an interesting bunch, don’t you think?

Consider drinking tap water instead

What do you make of this news? Will you boycott bottled water and start collecting them from your tap instead?

Or will you solely stick to the sugared drinks from now on?

Either way if all else fails, at least we still have this.

Guess we can’t complain that it tastes like toilet water anymore.

In all seriousness though, do take precaution when drinking bottled water from now on — maybe even consider using tap water as your primary source from now on.
