Springboard Diver’s Brave Response To Epic Fail

On 10 june, videos of failed dives by Filipino diver John David Pahoyo during the SEA Games 3-metre Aquatics Diving Final spread like wild fire. The 17-year-old splashed into the pool unceremoniously and was left with a score of zero in that particular dive.

SGAG uploaded a clip of the dive and from then on the video took a life of its own. It was watched over 1 million times in less than a day.

Screen Shot 2015-06-12 at 2.25.22 amSource

The famous overnight diver said “I am still proud because not all of us has the privilege to represent our country in a big sporting event like this.”

The athlete took things in stride and laughed along.

and now… we are viral..

Posted by JD Pahoyo on Wednesday, 10 June 2015

In fact, he was so classy in shrugging off negative comments by posting a video of an earlier dive with John Elmerson Fabriga where the duo carried out a series of impressive dives.

Yey! I’m so proud of us pakner John Fabriga, we really did our best despite of we just practiced this synchro dives for…

Posted by JD Pahoyo on Tuesday, 9 June 2015

“Why share our failed dives when you can share the dives that we did well?” he says.

Bravo, they are after all elite athletes who took on one of the scariest sports.

We give you a 10 for that.

Sylvia Lim Writes Enlightening Open Letter To AHPETC Residents — We Decode It For You

Sylvia Lim’s Open Letter to Aljunied Residents: Explained

Following the high court ruling last month (27 May), Justice Quentin Loh had rejected the government’s application for independent auditors to check on the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC). However, he also took the chance to give AHPETC a dressing down for managing the Town Council poorly.

Sylvia Lim is attempting to regain trust from the residents, beginning with an open letter released yesterday (11 June). The open letter is available here.

We looked at the letter, and boiled it down to just 6 things that Sylvia Lim wants you to know.

1. The AHPETC did not tender contracts to friends

One main allegation made against the Workers’ Party was that preferential treatment were given to their friends in the public tender for the management of the Town Council. In the letter, Sylvia Lim affirms that the allegation is false.

Source

According to Chairman of the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, public tenders for the AHPETC were not brought to public only on one occasion, between July 2011 – July 2012, where there was an urgent need to establish the Town Council.

AHPETC then decided to award the contract to FM Solutions & Services Pte Ltd (FMSS), which consisted of employees formerly from the Hougang Town Council.

In subsequent years, tenders for the management of AHPETC were made public. But guess what?

No managing agent were interested in the public tender except for the FMSS.

Source

2. The AHPETC did not overcharge the residents

The other allegation was the AHPETC overcharging their residents in their managing agent service fees.

Again, Lim affirms that the allegation is not true.

Source

She first stated that AHPETC  was allowed to charge different rates for residential and commercial for two reasons.

Firstly, the previous management agent of the Aljunied Town Council had the same practice.

Secondly, two other PAP Town Councils (East Coast and Pasir Ris-Punggol) operated the same way as well.

Source

She further questioned the logic of the PAP of using the “weighted average” managing agent service fees of all the Town Councils to compare and contrast with the AHPETC’s managing agent service fees.

The managing agent service fees in all Town Councils are uniquely calculated and cannot be compared so superficially.

She further stated that if the same logic had applied to some PAP Town Councils, residents would find out that they too, had been overcharged.

3. The AHPETC had followed examples from the previous management

Lim mentioned that the managing agent rates used in the AHPETC was adapted from the previous managing agent under the PAP from 1 August 2011 – 31 July 2012.

In subsequent years, the rates of the previous managing agent under the PAP was treated as a reference point for the AHPETC and the FMSS in setting their fees to be charged.

4. The AHPETC is working hard to resolve the issues

The AHPETC had gone through 10 months of independent auditor checks, where lapses and weaknesses have been spotted.

Lim affirms that the AHPETC is working hard to rectify their mistakes and they will need time to fully resolve everything.

They are furiously working away and setting things straight before the coming General Election.

Source

5. The AHPETC stands alone for now

The theme of this open letter is the revelation that the AHPETC stands alone without a managing agent.

Lim reveals that there is no bids for the public tender to manage AHPETC, and even FMSS did not bid at the most recent public tender.

Source

6. The AHPETC wants your support (especially AHPETC residents) for what they are going through

” On behalf of my fellow MPs and Town Councillors, I would like to thank you for your concern and support. Despite the challenging political climate, we will continue to serve you to the best of our ability. ”

- Sylvia Lim

WP made mistakes, and PAP pounced on them

Sylvia Lim’s open letter is a rare opportunity where we can consider the position of the Workers’ Party.

The open letter hints that the AHPETC saga is heavily dramatised in the Parliament by the PAP and the situation isn’t so complex.

Nonetheless, the Workers’ Party is not faultless either, as their incompetence is largely to be blame for the saga.

In 2014, when the other PAP Town Councils were shifting towards a flat rate managing agent fee, the AHPETC continued deriving their fees from old market information from 2012 — the same information used by the previous Aljuned administration led George Yeo.

Sylvia Lim also went to great lengths in reflecting that the AHPETC is merely doing what the previous management under the PAP had done, perhaps subtly trying to shift the blame to the previous administration.

This reflects strongly on the inability of the Workers’ Party to derive new ways to handle the management of town councils, and had to rely on outdated strategies from the previous administration.

Singapore’s Inter-faith Communities Aren’t Doing Enough At Their Jobs

Singapore, Multi-Cultural, Multi-Religious

We’ve heard all these things before. But, have you ever wondered why we have become associated with such descriptions?

We, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people. Regardless of race, language or religion…

We have internalized the words. We know what they mean.

In school, during National Service, in our HDB flats, we’re constantly surrounded by other races.

Imagine the shock then, when it was announced that two teens were arrested under the Internal Security Act for plotting to carry out acts of terrorism in Singapore.

Terror in the Little Red Dot

The first was student Mohd Arifil Azim Putra Norja’i, 19. The other was an unnamed 17-year-old student. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Arifil had made plans to join ISIS. Arifil was allegedly self-radicalized by propaganda he found online.

teo-chee-hean

Source

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean said that “our community leaders have worked hard to counter radical ideology…”

The problem is, who are these leaders?

Are our religious leaders and inter-faith organizations doing enough to integrate the many religions here? Quick, off the top of your head, how many religious leaders or inter-religious organizations can you name?

What are these Inter-Faith Organizations doing?

One of them is called the Inter-Religious Organization (IRO) and they describe themselves as such:

IRO About us

Source

Promoting peace and religious harmony are all good ideals to follow. The IRO says that they work quietly to promote peace and religious harmony but they are perhaps going about their business too quietly.

Look at the IRO’s events calendar and there is nothing on it.

Besides making the obligatory appearence at disasters or national events, nothing on the IRO appears in the news. Their last IRO news was about the 2012 General Meeting. If they can’t even maintain their own website, what then are they exactly supposed to be doing?

Who else are in the game?

Then there is the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circles (IRCC).

IRCC About Us

Source

The IRCC is a government-supported initiative. They are supposed to promote racial and religious harmony at the constituency level.

But when was the last time you went to their events? Have you even heard about them?

IRO Peranakan

Source

The last event they organised was on understanding Peranakan culture with a visit to the Peranakan Museum on May 23, 2015. But that was only in one constituency. Singapore has 27 constituencies. Where’s the engagement with the rest of the community?

These two are supposed to be the more prominent inter-religious organizations, and frankly most of us have never heard of them.

For those of us who identify with a religion, the community support given in our churches, mosques, and temples seem to be doing more to combat extremism and inter-faith tolerance than these organizations are.

Different Times, Different Challenges

The challenges facing us in the next 50 years will be different from the challenges that we have faced.

The way that these organizations engage us will also have to change. Otherwise, more like Arifil will start to emerge, shattering the peace and understanding we have worked so hard to secure

Singapore’s inter-faith communities are simply not doing enough.

Letter From Amos Yee’s Lawyers Indicate Amos Yee Is Having Suicidal Thoughts

$

Letter addressed to Jasvender Kaur, judge in charge of Amos Yee’s case

Amos Yee is not enjoying his time in remand.

Of course, no one would expect to be living on the lap of luxury in what is essentially jail, but you know shit’s getting serious when he’s having suicidal thoughts.

According to Amos’s lawyers at Dodwell & Co, Amos’s treatment throughout the trial and sentencing has been disproportionate for a 16-year-old (they make several references to his age throughout the letter), leading to him having suicidal thoughts.

In a letter released today (12 June) addressed to District Judge Jasvender Kaur, they allege numerous events which may shock you.

The full letter can be viewed here, but we’ve picked out some important points below:

1. Amos is being punished for more than just his video and image without any chance for a hearing

Amos’s subsequent postings on his blog and social media after 12 May were used as evidence in the trial when prosecutors submitted affidavits of his IO Jason Chua (the guy Amos hates so much!). Dodwell & Co believes that this is unfair as they argue that the subsequent postings were not related to his past offences of making a video insulting Christians and uploading an obscene picture of LKY and Margaret Thatcher.

Dodwell & Co believe that the judge had been influenced by this “irrelevant and highly prejucidal” evidence the prosecutors brought forward in court, and hence his sentencing was changed and he was placed in remand for a further three weeks.

They also question why the prosecutors were allowed to submit this evidence in the first place.

2. Amos should not be placed in RTC

Based on evidence that Dodwell & Co collected in a 2007 hearing, RTC is meant for violent teenagers and repeated offences of violence. Note the word “repeated” and “violence”.

To the lawyers, his crimes do not merit this sentencing. He is also not in any need of “reformation”, they claim.

3. Amos was not given important documents related to the trial while remanded

This happened on 5 May, when Amos’s lawyers visited him in prison. They had wanted to pass him some documents which were important for the trial, but these documents never reached Amos.

The lawyers believe that Amos had been treated unfairly and unjustly as a result.

4. Amos was strapped to a bed for a day and a half because he told psychiatrists that he had suicidal thoughts

According to Amos when he talked to his lawyers on 10 June, he’d begun to have suicidal thoughts as early as 30 April, when the prospect of him going to jail loomed. They subsided when the trial appeared to be concluded quickly, but when he was sent to be in remand on 2 June, he became depressed.

When he told prison psychiatrists that he was having suicidal thoughts on 4 June, he ended up being strapped to a bed for a day and a half, presumably to prevent him from committing suicide physically. This aggravated his suicidal thoughts instead of curing his depression.

The looming threat of RTC isn’t helping his thoughts, of course.

5. Threats against Amos have gone largely unpunished while he was sent to remand three times

The lawyers cited him as being a victim of hate crime and misguided vigilante justice in the form of a slap in front of the Subordinate Court. He’s also been the target of public bashing and threats made against him, which the authorities have not done anything about.

6. Lawyers want his hearing to be brought forward

Dodwell & Co have proposed that Amos be sentenced as soon as possible instead of continuing to be in remand. This is in light of the circumstances surrounding Amos since his days in remand, and any further time spent incarcerated would only make his mental condition worse.

The boy is just 16

This fact should have been apparent from the start, when he was arrested, but it appears that the prosecutors and authorities have deemed him mature enough to be tried as an adult.

Now, due to his behaviour — which many have deemed unacceptable, simply because he is not the typical meek teenager who does whatever is asked of him — he has spent several days in remand and may be sentenced to RTC. This just reeks of extremism, no matter one’s thoughts about the kid.

You have to wonder what exactly is so threatening about this kid. Annoying and immature he may be, even accusing his ex-bailor of molest, but he was never violent. On the other hand, people have made violent threats, and someone even slapped him.

Oh, and don’t forget he’s just 16. We were all immature at 16, not completely sure of what we were doing. Many have done worse than Amos and recovered to become upstanding members of society. Amos can easily do the same, but not in the heavy-handed manner with which he’s been treated. The more you hold down such a person, the more he will rebel.

Something to consider when Amos appears for his next hearing.

More Of LKY’s Stuff To Be Available For Viewing In Exhibitions

Trustees of LKY’s estate donated some of his personal belongings to the National Heritage Board

The public has spoken — they really, really like to look at Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s things. He also liked to look at things, but that’s besides the point.

The executors of LKY’s estate, consisting of Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang, two of LKY’s children, have seen the public interest and historical value their father’s belongings hold, and decided to donate some of his furniture and personal effects to the National Heritage Board (NHB) on Monday.

Here’s the stuff they gave:

1. Furniture from the dining room, study room and work desk areas

3. Other personal effects

Items to be displayed at SG50 Tribute Gallery

It would appear that the Lee family are very surprised at the public’s interest. Lee Hsien Yang elaborated on why they decided to donate the items:

“We believe that these items would be of keen public interest and would serve as a very meaningful part of the exhibition,”

“In accordance with our late father’s last Will and Testament that his house at 38 Oxley Road be demolished, my sister and I, as the executors and trustees of the estate, believe it is only appropriate that some of his personal items of historic importance, that have been used by him at the house, be donated to the NHB for the people of Singapore who honoured him with their love and respect during our recent bereavement.”

That exhibition will be in either August or September. LKY fans will not want to miss this opportunity to lovingly gaze upon the furniture he used and the clothes he wore on special occasions.

There’s no word on whether said items are available for touching. Nor is there any word on whether 38 Oxley Road will be preserved. This move appears to be a compromise for Singaporeans who wish for everything related to LKY to be preserved for historical reasons.

Meanwhile, NHB is definitely happy at this turn of events, because they will have more nice historical items to display for #SG50. Everyone wins!

After you finish reading this, you might be wondering whether I over-stalked the social media of athletes just to write this article. But I’ll just tell you now.

That’s exactly what I did. #NoShame

Aaaaaanywaaay. This my friends, is how you would look like after a lifetime of training pays off at the SEA Games:

The first thing you think of isn’t standing on the podium, but lying on the track from exhaustion (at least it’s the good kind).

That’s why behind every race, swim or goal, comes rest, laughter and even reflection.

Here’s your SEA Games athletes the way you’re not used to seeing them:

18-Year-Old Singaporean Silat Exponent Wins Gold, Sheds Tears On Podium

The Hero Who Cried

Pencak Silat Tanding Men's Class F Victory Ceremony (Day 9) | 28th SEA Games Singapore 2015Source

On 14 June, upon stepping up on the podium as the Champion of the Pencak Silat Class F, Muhammad Nur Alfian Juma’en broke into tears after being overwhelmed by his feelings.

Now known as the Hero who cried, we explain why Nur Alfian’s tears and victory matters so much to Singapore.

1. He earned Singapore’s only Gold Medal in Silat

At the time of fighting, it was down to Nur Alfian to secure the only Gold in the silat event. The team had so far won 1 Silver and 6 Bronzes, but a gold medal would have meant so much more.

The pressure was tremendous, as he alone decided the success of Singapore Silat at the 28th SEA Games.

Thanks to Nur Alfian, it was a success.

Why It Matters?

Nur Alfian’s gold medal victory proves that homegrown talents are capable and worth supporting.

Despite being only 18 years old, the gold medal was actually Nur Alfian’s second for Singapore in as many SEA Games.

At the 2013 SEA Games, Nur Alfian — then a debutant — secured the gold medal in the same event, much to the surprise of everyone.

His consistency certainly proves that the future for silat in Singapore looks bright indeed.

back to the future animated GIF Source

2.He won Medal #80

Nur Alfian’s gold medal was Singapore’s number 80 in the still ongoing SEA Games.

Why It Matters

His gold medal pushed Singapore to the 80 gold medal mark, in effect surpassing even the most optimistic expectations for Team Singapore in this SEA Games.

The success of our athletes in this SEA Games proved that the sporting scene in Singapore have reached a whole new level.

reaction animated GIF Source

3. He defeated the Silat World Champion

The opponenent who Nur Alfian overcame is not a simple opponent, Tran Dinh Nam, is the current World Champion.

Why it Matters?

The Singapore Silat team went into the SEA Games as dark horses, the gold medal from Nur Alfian was certainly a remarkable. And to clinch it by defeating the World Champion is really something.

The gold medalist’s victory over the World Champion perhaps embodies how Singapore have consistently been punching above our weight in many areas.

Like Nur Alfian, Singapore has been sweeping World Champions off their feet on our day.

4. He was bleeding, but carried on fighting

Nur Alfian did not only defeat the World Champion, but did so after sustaining an injury midway into the match.

Early into the 3rd round, he sustained a deep cut between his toes up to the sole of his feet.

Pencak Silat Tanding Men's Class F Final SIN vs VIE (Day 9) | 28th SEA Games Singapore 2015 Source

Even then, he did not give up and persevered to the end of the game.

Why It Matters?

He reminded us of the “never give up” spirit within us — the very spirit that allowed Singapore not only survive but to progress so well.

5. He worked hard

Nur Alfian’s success did not come in easy. Apart from being a silat fighter, he is also a student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, enrolled in the course of Business & Accountancy.

After winning the gold medal, Nur Alfian only got his sacrifices to thank for.

“To say that I am 100 times happy cannot match how I feel. My diet, training and sacrifices made have finally paid off.”

- Muhammad Nur Alfian Juma’en

Why It Matters?

Nur Alfian’s success proves that the principle of meritocracy works.

His hard work and sacrifices paid off with the gold medal at the SEA Games.

To put things into perspectives, he was awarded the Sportsboy Meritorious Award by the Singapore National Olympic Council in 2013, and we can probably expect him to be awarded another one this year.

The face of “all my sacrifices paid off”.

Pencak Silat Tanding Men's Class F Victory Ceremony (Day 9) | 28th SEA Games Singapore 2015Source

6. He had his sweet revenge

To cap things off, Nur Alfian’s victory was also a sweet revenge over the man who defeated him in quarter-finals of the World Silat Championship earlier this year.

Why it Matters?

It matters to us, because it matters to him!

In the preparation for the match, he reflected on his loss earlier this year.

He changed his strategy from an aggressive strategy to a counter attacking strategy, Nur Alfian willingness to learn from his mistake, enabled him to clinch the sweet revenge against Tran and a gold medal for Singapore.

7. He showed that Singaporeans actually have emotions

According to “expert” polls, Singapore is ranked as the least emotional country in the world.

Why it Matters?

It matters because this nation does not deserve this misconceived nametag.

When Nur Alfian had won the gold medal, it wasn’t just him who got all emotional.

His coaches, and the fans in attendance all roared in celebration.

Moving on

At the tender age of 18, Nur Alfian has already won two SEA Games gold medals, and possesses the potential to blaze the international Silat scene.

Perhaps he’s sobbing because of the tremendous pressure he will inevitably face in future competitions.

9 Singaporean Ministers And Their Completely Plausible Alternate Career Paths

What would the Ministers do if they weren’t Ministers?

We see them on the TV, we read about them and they lead us.

But have we ever wondered what they could have been if they weren’t our leaders?

MustShareNews take a look at what 10 Ministers could be if they weren’t Ministers.

1. Lee Hsien Loong

Source

What Minister is he?

Prime Minister

What could he be?

A coding programmer, and a really good one at that.

Earlier this year (4 May), PM Lee uploaded a photo of a Sudoku solver that he had coded on his Facebook.

Yes, PM Lee actually codes in his free time.

The code can be seen below, it will probably be too ‘cheem’ for you to understand, just take a glance.

Source

Two computing professors from local universities commented that the code is “well structured” and “well written.”

Impressive ain’t it?

2. Chan Chun Sing

Source

What Minister is he?

Minister in Prime Minister’s Office

Secretary General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC)

What could he be?

A motivational speaker.

When Minister Chan was first unveiled as a new candidate for the PAP in Tanjong Pagar, he was already a very witty and engaging speaker.

He was so engaging, that during the 2011 General Election Rally, he earned the nickname “kee chiu” which means “to raise hand” in Hokkien, in reference to his continuous engagement with the audience during his speeches.

3. Tan Chuan Jin

What Minister is he?

Minister for Social and Family Development

What could he be?

A photographer, and a pretty professional one at that.

We took a look at some of Minister Tan’s photos on his Facebook, and we got to say that he’s a pretty good photographer.

I mean, just take a look at some of his glorious photos —

4. K. Shanmugam

What Minister is he?

Minister for Law

Minister for Foreign Affairs

What could he be?

An animal rights activist.

Minister Shanmugam simply loves animals, especially dogs.

Source
Source

Aside from his Ministerial duties, he is also very active in promoting the welfare of animals. He attended numerous local events, promoting the awareness of animal rights.

I hope SMU Animal Day will continue, and help raise awareness and promote animal welfare amongst Singaporeans.

- K Shanmugam

Not convinced? Minister Shanmugam once cared for a missing dog while waiting for the Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD) organisation and had look for its owners as well.

More of Minister Shanmugam’s visit to animal’s right events and his dog rescuing heroics can be found here.

5. Lawrence Wong

Source

What Minister is he?

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth

What could he be?

A guitarist.

Minister Wong often sings for public grassroot events around Singapore.

He sang at the 2012 New Year Countdown at Boon Lay.

He jams with Jeremy Monteiro.

We’re gonna say that Jeremy looks pretty impressed in the video.

6. Tharman Shanmugaratnam

Source

What Minister is he?

Deputy Prime Minister

Minister for Finance

What could he be?

An international officer.

Well, he could have led the world, if not Singapore.

Apart from being the Finance Minister, Minister Shanmugaratnam is also the Chairman of the Policy Advisory Committee in the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

That’s right, the IMF.

Not everyone gets to sit shoulder to shoulder with Christine Lagarde.

Remarks by Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director, in G20/IMFC press conferenceSource

In 2013, he was also awarded the Best Finance Minister of 2013.

Minister Shanmugaratnam’s clear understanding of finance and economics places him among in the ranks of potential international leaders.

Earlier this year, he dismantled a speaker in a “friendly” debate, presenting his articulation skills, you can watch it here.

7. Lim Swee Say

What Minister is he?

Minister for Manpower

What could he be?

A marketing executiveseriously.

Prior to his current appointment as the Minister for Manpower, Minister Lim was the Secretary General of the NTUC from 2007-2015.

His tenure was marked with various songs and slogans in efforts to market and promote the NTUC.

Ok, we know they’re not very good marketing strategies, but surely the effort counts.

8. Vivian Balakrishnan

What Minister is he?

Minister for Environment and Water Resources

What could he be?

A coding programmer. Yes, same as PM Lee.

Roughly a week after PM Lee released his Sudoku Code solver, Minister Balakrishnan translated PM Lee’s code from C++ to Javascript.

9. Gan Kim Yong

What Minister is he?

Minister for Health

What could he be?

A religious figure

He may be better known as the Minister who threatened jail time for people who don’t pay their MediSave.

Incidentally, he is also a religious man, serving the Chen Li Presbyterian Church as an elder.

Minister Gan’s religious stance was amplified during the Integrated Casino Resort Debate.

As one of the more vocal opponents of the casino because of his religious background, Minister Gan questioned the success of the casino, and if alternatives could be considered.

BONUS NON-MINISTER 10. Baey Yam Keng

Some can sing, some can dance, our Ministers can both!

Well… not really, but they can be pretty multi-talented in their own personal interest.

Our image of our Ministers are confined largely to the newspaper and news channel. It’s easy to forget that they are just like us, they too have hobbies, non-political interests and talents that they could actually make a career of!

Singapore Breezes Past 80 Gold Medal Mark, Making SEA Games History

Singapore Breaks National Record With 82 Gold Medals

The 28th SEA Games comes to a close tomorrow (16 June), Singapore has broken previous medal records with 82 Golds, 72 Silvers and 99 Bronzes at press time.

That’s a whopping 253 medals.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 3.11.06 pmSource

We come in second to Thailand, which has 87 Gold medals as of press time.

Tearing down old records

The highest number of gold medals Singapore previously even got close to was a 50 Gold record set in 1993.

Back then, swimmer Joscelin Yeo who chopped up the pool to win nine Gold medals, which included 7 individual and 2 relay races. She still holds the record for winning the most number of gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games, with 40 gold medals over a span of eight SEA Games from 1991-2003.

Athletes build new records with their blood, sweat and tears

2015 turned out to be even more spectacular. Singapore claimed its 51st Gold of this SEA Games last Tuesday when swimmer Quah Zheng Wen dominated the pool to win the men’s 400m individual medley.

Quah Zheng Wen competed in 12 events over six days and won a medal in every one of them, seven Golds, four Silvers and one Bronze. Singapore zipped its way from 51 Gold medals to the 80th Gold medal. On Sunday (15 June), Singaporean pencak silat athlete Muhammad Nur Alfian brought home the 80th Gold in the Men’s Tanding (match) Class F after he beat his Vietnamese counterpart and current world champion, Tran Dinh Nam with a score of 5-0. Nur Alfian cried while the national anthem was played during his victory ceremony, as he claimed Singapore’s first and only Gold medal in Pencak Silat during the 28th SEA Games.

Posted by Channel NewsAsia Singapore on Sunday, 14 June 2015

Nur Alfian’s triumph despite his badly bleeding foot epitomised the spirit of the Games.

Singapore’s glory to gold well deserved

Some of the 82-and-counting Gold medals were expected, others were total surprises.

Shanti Pereira amazed Singapore when she blazed her way in the women’s 200m sprint to be the first female Singapore sprinter to win a SEA Games Gold medal since Glory Barnabas did in 1973.

Then there were sports where we expected Gold medals but did not get any.

The women’s table tennis singles crashed out. Singapore’s football team got kicked out of the competition after loosing out to Indonesia 1-0. Coach Aide Iskandar resigned after the team’s failure.

But there is no doubt in the athletes have made Singapore proud, with or without medals around their necks. More than the glory of gold, they have shown the glory of sportsmanship to the international area watching the Games for the past week.

After all, all that glitters is not gold.

Team Singapore, well done.

12 Games We All Used To Secretly Play In The Computer Lab As Kids

$

0

Admit it, you played these games while the teacher’s back was turned

In primary school, trips to the computer laboratory were always anticipated because that meant a chance to play games! I mean, that’s all kids could think about when it came to using the computer anyway, even though teachers clearly had different ideas.

Many a class conducted in the computer lab was spent playing one or more of these games which were all the rage when I was in primary/secondary school — behind the backs of the teachers, of course. You weren’t a cool kid if you didn’t play at least one of those games sneakily while the teacher wasn’t paying attention.

Or maybe I was just a really naughty kid.

Here they are, in no particular order.

1. Runescape

Before World of Warcraft became the largest MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) in the world, there was Runescape.

The nominally free MMORPG by Jagex (you could pay a fee to unlock new stuff unavailable to free users) was quite a hit back in the day, at least before Maple Story started to dominate the market.

Being hosted online made it easy for kids to access their accounts from any PC, perfect for playing in the computer lab.

42584-runescape-windows-screenshot-busy-town-of-varrock

Source

Even though you had to pay to enjoy the full game, the free game itself wasn’t too shabby.

Anyone who played the game back then miiiight have spent more time in the game doing seemingly mundane things like cooking, fishing, mining or the multitude of other skills you can choose to level up, over actual combat.

One time someone came up to me randomly and gave me his account because he didn’t want to play Runescape any more. My account was way worse than his, so I was ecstatic, of course.

The game also taught me to not trust strangers online, because I got scammed by a guy who also happened to be from Singapore. Funnily enough we’re acquaintances now.

You probably learned more about cooking in Runescape than in the hours you spent in the kitchen pinching food from your mum.

2. Neopets

game_defender_pets

Source

Another browser-based game (this will be a recurring trend), Neopets appealed to both boys and girls due to its virtual pet system which allows you to adopt one or more cute fictional creatures. You can feed them, paint them, send them to battle, along with a whole host of other activities.

What I was more interested in were the Flash games, which were very well-done. Meerca Chase (a reimagined version of Snake) was my favourite.

Not forgetting the “ritual” everyone would do once they logged into their account — collecting all the free stuff on offer.

3. Maple Story

MapleStory-8

Source

F3 F3 F3 F3. ’nuff said.

While Runescape had a medieval theme largely catered to guys, Korean MMORPG MapleStory (the game was localised as MapleSEA in Singapore and Malaysia) upped the cuteness ante and marketed heavily to teenagers, both male and female.

You MUST have heard of Maple Story, even if you didn’t play it (I, for one, detested it). While not an integral part of the game, kids’ allowances were blown on pre-paid cards which were then used to gain cash items through virtual vending machines known as Gachapon.

The game had a social element too — raise your hands for those who have gotten married in the game to someone you may or may not have met in real life.

We have no idea why he’s dancing to the Maple Story theme song either.

4. Little Fighter 2

1560727-little_fighter_2

Source

Carrying on the side-scrolling game trend is Little Fighter 2, a multiplayer fighting game made by Marti Wong and Starsky Wong.

If you saw two or more people hunched in front of a monitor, frantically mashing their keyboards, they were probably playing this.

As far as PC fighting games went, it was da bomb.Every character has their own special moves a la Street Fighter, but the capability for up to 8 players at once made the game most fun when you had four people squeezed on one chair attempting to manoeuvre their little fighters around the arena, all while items available for usage fall from the sky.

Who else remembers making items fall like rain by pressing F8 repeatedly until everyone’s HP bars were depleted? Good times.

5. Habbo Hotel

2647 habbo calippo_01

Source

Before social media like Facebook and Twitter was a thing, we had actual games dedicated to meeting others…and buying a lot of furniture. Behold Habbo Hotel, a social networking website/game aimed at teenagers to socialise online.

You walk around these hotels as avatars, these cute people you see in the picture. Then you chat with them. And you can buy furniture, known as “furni”.

CokeMusic_Furni

Source

Fun times were had saying “bobba” at every turn (the word they use to censor vulgarities in the client).

6. Club Penguin

image_club_penguin_2

Why does this game exist?

Because kids really wish to be penguins. Or something.

7. Miniclip/Flash games, or colloquially known as ‘online games’

One common theme which ties together all these games is their ease of access — all you have to do is enter the website’s name and voila! You can play the game, as well as X over the window hurriedly when your teacher happens to be walking in your direction.

Popular websites specifically catered to play mini-games included miniclip.com, and Miniclip’s claim to fame remains 8-Ball Pool.

8ballpool

Source

That game’s been around on the site forever, or at least since my time in computer labs, but its popularity endures to this day.

8. Math Blaster

Source

Probably the only game your teachers allowed you to play in the computer lab, Math Blaster was the epitome of “edutainment” back in the day, being one of the only games deemed educational enough for use in school.

Players fight aliens by solving mathematical sums, like 1 + 6 and 2 + 3. Suffice to say, Math Blaster was the closest to fun I’ve ever experienced while doing math.

Maybe I should have played it more.

9. Pokemon (emulated)

Pokemon on the computer? But how? We won’t go into detail (for it is technically illegal to emulate games on the PC), but technology even back in my primary school days allowed for games such as Pokemon to be played on the PC. Something about a boy who was visual…

artisancave3

Source

As far as consoles went, Pokemon was (and probably still is) the most-emulated game back in the day when there were only 386 Pokemon, and Pokemon Emerald was the most recent release.

10. Those Windows games (Solitaire, Freecell, Minesweeper, Pinball)

Download-Windows-XP-s-Pinball-Game-for-Windows-7-and-Windows-8-2

Source

It is usually customary for administrators in IT labs to disable games which come bundled with the operating systems, because computers in schools are meant for education.

Sometimes, a few computers manage to slip past the admins’ checks and so began a few hours’ worth of playing 3D Pinball (which you can download here if you’re missing it).

These games were my respite for when the internet connection would go down randomly. I even started playing Solitaire with a pack of cards when I got bored, all because I learned about the game via my computer.

11. Adventure Quest

ss-vamps

Source

Known colloquially as BattleON, Adventure Quest is yet another browser-based RPG which doesn’t require installation. The theme is medieval and you can supposedly save the world by paying money to get cool weapons.

12. Pong

pong

Source

You can’t forget one of the oldest video games ever on this list; hell, I wasn’t even born when this game was made.

All you had to do was return the ball and hope your opponent can’t reach it. Something like tennis but could provide for hours of mindless entertainment.

The variation I played in the computer lab was 3D Pong, which included smashing curves to the opponent as opposed to just returning them.

Kid-friendly yet fun games which stood the test of time

We might not play all of these games nowadays, what with changing trends and more sophisticated technology at our grasp, but they certainly entertained us in a time when computers were seen as a luxury and internet connections were barely fast enough to support anything more than turn-based browser games.

It’s arguable that we had more fun with these seemingly primitive games than with the graphically-intense games we see today. Sometimes, simple can be just as fun.

Know any game that you played in the computer lab but missing in this list? Let us know!

Finally! The reunion we have all been waiting for.

On the day (5 June) of the Sabah Earthquake, Singapore lost 9 lives. We mourn our loss, but cannot forget to give thanks to those who did what they could to save others.

Channel NewsAsia caught up with the heroic mountain guides who carried 12-year-old El Wafeeq el Jauzy down the mountain.

Maybe this picture will jog your memory.

The guide in the picture, Rizuan Kauhinin, was given the hero treatment by many netizens for piggybacking the student down the mountain.

Rizuan, however, remains humble commenting that he was merely doing his job. A week later, Channel NewsAsia arranged a meetup between Rizuan and the boy whose life he had saved.

The unassuming hero had only agreed to the meetup only on the condition that two other mountain guides who was also involved in the rescue could follow.

We track them in their journey to meet Wafeeq.

Bukit Batok Coffee Shop Sold For Record $31 Million, We Wonder Why So Expensive

Coffee Shop Sold For Almost 10 Times The Original Price

Yong Xing Coffee Shop in Bukit Batok was sold for a record $31 million, reported local media.

Guess how much it was bought for 20 years ago?

$3.38 million. I’m almost sure I can hear the seller’s laughter behind his new fortress made out of dollar bills.

giphySource

The seller is believed to own another large coffee shop in Jurong West Street 91.

The previous record for most expensive coffee shop was set in 2013, for a coffee shop in Houngang Avenue 4. It was sold for $23.8 million.

Property prices go Boomz

No surprises there, when you consider the fact that Singapore has one of the most expensive property prices in the world.

Last year, a gold class bungalow measuring 3,130 sq m on 27 Ridout Road was sold for $35 million.

20150310_ridoutroad-dtzSource

Even so, we wonder how Yong Xing Coffee Shop can fetch such a massive price. Maybe there’s a private room where the uncles still hang out and karaoke at.

But then again, Yong Xing Coffee Shop is not just any ordinary kopitiam. The record-breaking coffeeshop was so expensive because of its price and location. It is surrounded by housing blocks and shops.

West Mall Shopping Centre is a 15 minute walk away.

Yong Xing boasts of 19 stalls, most of which see a lot of regulars.

Who bears the cost of $31 million?

It might not all be a happy ending after all. Tenants told local media that rent has already gone up by at least 10 percent. While they hope not the have to raise prices for customers, the situation looks inevitable.

Looks like it’s the patrons who will be indirectly paying for the $31million the next time they order Chicken Rice at the coffee shop.

Effective SPF Is Effective, Nab Loanshark Who Set Fire To Two Flats In Jurong East

Police Arrest One Of The Loansharks Involved In Jurong East Corridor Fire

On Monday (15 June) evening, police arrested one of the suspected loansharks involved in setting fire to two flats at Block 272 Toh Guan Road.

Police wasted no time in arresting the 31-year-old man was Lorong 5 Toa Payoh. Police also confiscated paint cans, bicycle chain locks, and other loanshark-related paraphernalia.

He is suspected of setting fire to the two flats of two innocent families on Saturday (13 June). Local media reported that the real target of the families might be the flat below the two units, where the police have installed a closed-circuit camera.

The families were not even aware that there was a raging fire outside their doors at midnight. They were sleeping and only became aware of it when SCDF came knocking on their doors.

The doors and walls of the corridor were charred black, stretching past the lift lobby.

Don’t mess with SPF

Our effective police force effectively nabbed the loanshark within days of the incident, even though the suspect thought it would have been a better bet to set fire to neighbours who don’t have a camera installed.

No surprise that SPF wasted no time, when the nature of the crime itself is alarming. Setting fire to a flat greys the area between harassment and trying to kill an entire block of residents. While only one person was hurt this time, lives could have just as easily been lost.

Police have classified the case as suspected unlicensed moneylending harassment by fire.

New harassment tactics

We are all familiar with the splash of paint and O$P$ signs sprawled on the walls close to the debtors. Some have even heard of pig heads being hung outside debtor’s door. But setting fire to the apartment door is the latest slew of far more deadly tactics.

In January, a group of youths were arrested for loanshark harassment activities. The boys set fire to items in front of the flat units, like slippers, newspapers, and clothes.

Nabbing these criminals fast sends a message that the law will not tolerate these outbursts.

As they say, don’t play with fire. Especially not with our all-around Singapore Police Force.

Tan Chuan-Jin Shows Us That The SEA Games Media Team Deserves A Gold Medal Too

Everything you know about SEA Games broadcasting is a lie

Take a look at the pictures from Minister Tan Chuan-Jin’s recent behind-the-scenes visit to the SEA Games broadcasting site at MediaCorp:

Now ask yourself this question: who stands out in these photos?

“The media technicians!” said no one ever.

But thanks to the incredibly hip Minister for Manpower and Social and Family Development — who happens to have quite a cute hashtag obsession — we now know how much respect these behind the scenes artists truly deserve.

tan chuan jin sea games 6Source

3 reasons why the SEA Games media team are the real MVPs

1. The commentators aren’t in a glass studio at the top of the stadium

Let’s use this Philippines vs Singapore football preliminary as an example:

What you know: That the commentator sounds no different from every other football commentator at 58:50 when the first goal of the match is scored.

What you don’t know: All of that screaming is done in a room.

tan chuan jin sea games 7Source

2. Too much work goes into updating scoreboards

What you know: The medal tally and game scores are up to date whenever you need them.

tan chuan jin sea games medal standingsSource

What you don’t know: The people below are responsible for keeping track of 1313 medals from 402 events across 36 sports.

They’re the ones that religiously update the scores across television, online, AND mobile mediums, just for your convenience.

3. They’re the ultimate multi-taskers

What you know (thanks to us): The SEA Games media team works harder than you thought.

What you don’t know: They’re the true multi-tasking Gods.

Seriously, check out that man to screen ratio. Each employee watches 20 screens like there’s no kick.

Blue Samurais 0-0 Lions: When A Draw Feels Like a Victory

Source

Singapore is one step closer to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Last night (16 June), Singapore held Japan to a goalless draw in a friendly 2018 World Cup qualifier at the Saitama Stadium.

What so good about a draw?

Well, a measly draw seems like something really petty for us to be happy about, but if we consider where both countries stand in the FIFA rankings, this deal is massive.

Source

That’s right, Japan is ranked 52nd and Singapore is ranked 154th. (We have no idea why the FIFA list ranking on the website is crooked, it could be reflective of the organisation.) The distance between both countries actually shows that a draw was a pretty impressive result for us.

Despite playing at home with a boisterous crowd, possessing a star studded squad, and having the ball 70% of the game, the Japanese just could not convert their dominance into goals.

Singapore has one man to thank for the result.

One Man: Izwan Mahbud

The Singaporean goalkeeper for the night was in blazing form.

He saved a total of 18 shots on target against the likes of Keisuke Honda, Shinji Okazaki, Shinji Kagawa, and Yoshinori Mutō (all of whom ply their trade at the top professional level in Europe)

He pushed away Kagawa’s effort.

He clipped away Okazaki’s one-on-one strike.

Source

10 minutes into the second half, he pulled off an insane save from Okazaki’s header.

Source

Honda’s header from a corner kick was parried away.

Source

The evening was just perfect for the 24-year-old goalkeeper.

Source

Save after save for 90 minutes until he saved Singapore from falling into to defeat.

It was no surprise that Izwan was awarded the Man of the Match for his efforts.

Who’s Next?

Singapore now sits pretty at the top of Group E in Round 2 of the 2018 World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Sure, we might only be 2 games in with 6 still left to play, but small victories should be celebrated along the way.

To the rest of Group E, I say — Bring it on!

Meanwhile, let’s just admire her like the creeps that we are.

10 Life Lessons We Can Learn From The Life Story Of Singapore’s Richest Man, Goh Cheng Liang

$

From rags to riches

Rome was not built in a day; likewise, empires were not built overnight either. There is no quick route to success – many a time the road would be fraught with obstacles, but some overcame these stumbling blocks and achieved success.

This is the inspiring story of Singapore’s richest man, Goh Cheng Liang, who made it from zero to hero, despite barely having any education. With a net worth of $6.8 billion, he surpasses Singapore’s second richest man, UOB banking stalwart Wee Cho Yaw, by $1.3 billion.

Here are 10 life lessons we can take away from this humble billionaire’s life story:

1. Never give up in the face of adversity

PerseveranceSource

No, Goh Cheng Liang was not born with a silver spoon. It was, in fact, quite the opposite.

Born in 1928 to a jobless father and a mother who washes laundry, Goh and his family of seven had to squeeze together in a $3-a-month rented room in a River Valley Road shophouse. This situation lasted until he was 12 years old.

He was then sent to Muar in Malaya to help his brother-in-law sell fishing nets when World War II broke out.

He eventually returned to Singapore in 1943.

2. Acquire knowledge and skills from life

58004603Source

His life story refutes the claim that one needs a degree to succeed. Goh only completed primary education in a Chinese school, but learnt business skills through selling fishing nets and working in a hardware store.

These skills would later shape his destiny.

3. Do not be discouraged by failures

After he returned to Singapore, Goh tried his hand at being a boss by selling aerated water but his business failed.

In an interview with the Business Times in 1997, the media shy tycoon shared about his experience, “No experience, went bust, everything finished, all my Tiger notes (Straits Settlement currency) disappeared”.

In 1945, Goh undertook an apprentice at Tan Chong Huat Hardware at South Bridge Road. He soon got his promotion and became a salesman.

4. Think out of the box

05bd0_meme%20top%20art%20finalSource

In 1949, Goh purchased several barrels of rotten paint from the British army’s auction, and experimented with the paint by mixing it with colours. His first business was soon conceived under the brand Pigeon Paint, and soared in 1950 when the Singapore Government introduced restrictions on imports following the Korean War.

Five years later, he set up his first paint shop in Singapore with main distribution rights for Nippon Paint.

5. Life’s a journey of lifelong learning

Nippon_Paint_SG_logoSource

Goh did not just stop there. He headed to Denmark to learn paint manufacturing technology. When he returned to Singapore, he agreed to form a partnership with Japan’s Nippon Paint Holdings.

In the joint venture, he founded Nipsea Group (Nippon Paint South-East Asia Group) in 1962. His business proved to be a profitable, since the government ordered for buildings to be repainted every five years. This joint venture took off and branched out into the rest of the region, including Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and the Phillippines.

6. Step out of your comfort zone

Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone – if you do it right, it should be quite an adventure.

The paint tycoon expanded into property development in the 1970s and 1980s, and turned out to have a knack for it. He then established Wuthelam Holdings to oversee all his other non-paint related business ventures.

Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Liang Court were some of the prominent properties developed by him.

7. Stay humble

He’s Singapore’s richest man. He has all the bragging rights.

Instead, the man’s a recluse and has only done an interview with Singapore’s Business Times in 1997. From that interview, we found out that the humble man worked in a sparsely furnished office at Genting Lane.

His favourite food? The good ol’ Teochew porridge from the hawker centre.

PorridgeSource

8. Indulge in some guilty pleasures

giphySource

You know what they say – all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Likewise, the billionaire likes to indulge himself in a collection of catamarans and super yachts. He likes to go scuba diving and deep-sea fishing in Bali via his US$30 million three-deck yacht, White Rabbit II.

Singapore-Billionaire-Goh-Cheng-Liang-Super-Yacht-White-Rabbit-EchoSource

9. Help others in need

Screen Shot 2015-06-16 at 3.37.39 pmSource

When Goh had the means, he didn’t forget to give back to society to help others. The low-profile billionaire’s philanthropic presence makes headlines through the Goh Foundation. In 2005, he set up the SMU Goh Foundation scholarship. In 2009, the foundation gave $12 million to Leukaemia research. In 2012, an undisclosed grant was donated to a project to come up with the world’s first risk-free drug test which makes use of the patient’s own skin. In 2014, the Goh Foundation contributed $50 million to the National Cancer Centre Singapore.

10. Impart skills to continue legacy

In 1991, the magnate’s son, Goh Hup Jin, took over Wuthelam Holdings. In the 1997 media interview, Goh shared that he was “75 per cent retired”. The younger Goh holds a chemical engineering degree and acquired his MBA at the University of California.

In 2014, Nipsea’s share doubled to 39 per cent after Wuthelam Group signed a deal with Japan’s Nippon Paint. Nipsea is now Asia’s largest paintmaker operating in 15 Asian countries. This deal also helped increase Goh’s wealth to $11 billion.

Not too bad, son.

like-father-like-son_o_273966Source

Nothing is impossible

From Goh Cheng Liang’s story, we can see that Goh’s success story was two parts diligence and one part luck. The mogul overcame difficulties in life and earned his stripes the hard way.

Also, who knew the paint industry was such a lucrative one?

BRB, mixing my own brand of Penguin paint right now.
