Singaporeans Not Happy With Ex-NMP Calvin Cheng’s Comments On Paris Attacks

Singaporeans are not tolerating the comments made by Calvin Cheng

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Paris, Calvin Cheng, former Singaporean Nominated Member of Parliament, remarked on the incident by calling on people to “kill them before they kill you. And their children too..”

He was responding to a Facebook post made by Devadas Krishnadas about keeping Singapore safe from violent extremism. Devadas posted his thoughts about Singaporeans having constraints on certain freedom and giving the state power in exchange for a safer country.

You can see his full post below.

While readers found Devadas’ post constructive,  Calvin Cheng’s reply to the post incited anger from Singaporeans.

Some people even questioned if Calvin Cheng’s comments itself sounded rather radicalised.

Meanwhile, Calvin Cheng seems to believe that his comments were legitimate and responded to his critics accordingly.

He basically used the example of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as an example of killing children who are already involved in conflict so that they don’t “blow u up”.

How classy.

While Calvin Cheng, like all of us, does not want a terrorist on the loose, what is most troubling is tactlessness in wanting to persecute children. Public figures need to be more sensitive of their views on social media, especially after the attacks so as not to incite further hostility.

With ISIS trying to radicalise Muslims and stoking the flames globally, we should be even more careful with our words.

Jusuf Kalla Unveils The Bizarre Reason How The Haze Reached Singapore

Indonesia’s Vice-President Plays Blame Game Over Haze Issue

Indonesia’s Vice-President, Jusuf Kalla, is back in the limelight once again.

This time, Mr Kalla has blamed the wind for spreading the haze to neighbouring countries.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO summit, Mr Kalla issued an apology to Singapore and Malaysia, stating that Indonesia was unable to control the wind.

Don’t worry. We are scratching our heads too.

Problems Indonesia face from the haze

The Vice-President was then asked about the obstacles Indonesia face in eliminating the yearly haze.

He responded that the smoke and dust led to health problems, school closures and flight delays. All is not gloomy though, with Mr Kalla’s government working to restore forests in Indonesia that perished quickly due to logging.

Not one to forget the good deeds of others, the Vice-President thanked the countries that aided Indonesia when the haze was at its peak. He however asserted that a collective effort is still needed for Indonesia to stamp out the haze.

Mr Kalla also suggested that the haze will stick around till next year, but would be less severe.

Less excuses more measures

We can only hope in the future that there will be less bizarre blaming but more measures to curb the haze from Mr Kalla and his government as South East-Asia cannot afford to plunge into another haze crisis.

Singaporean Lawyer Write Handy Facebook Post For Muslims To ‘Own’ ISIS Problem

A guide to solving your Daesh issues

Soon after Daesh (that’s what we’re calling ISIS now) claimed responsibility for the Paris Attacks, people started putting a filter of the French flag on their Facebook profile pictures in memoriam of victims.

Then, lengthy commentaries started going viral across social media, in particular this one encouraging Muslims to ‘own’ the problem of Daesh.

Except confronting the problem can be a tricky one, given Muslims have difficulty considering Daesh as an organization of the same faith.

Playwright Alfian Sa’at, in particular, expressed his dissonance.

Well, we might have finally found a simple 4 step guide for Alfian, presented in a simple Facebook post.

Yep, there are only 4 steps

Lawyer Nabil Mustafiz stated in his post that Muslims need to accept the fact that Daesh are, in fact, of the same religion as them. Just that they’re the smallest, most radical, most extreme, faction of the religion.

These so called “Muslims” have misinterpreted and distorted facts from the Quran, and have extensively weaponised far more than any other text in the holy book.

Instead, all Muslims should join in the fight against the weaponisation of Islam, claiming that Muslims themselves need to find an answer to this problem.

Why the guide was created

The guide was created in a Facebook post was a response to Alfian’s Facebook post of how Muslims need not ‘own’ Daesh.

In his post, Alfian stated that Muslims do not have a solution, as he considered those in Daesh as not Muslims and that their acts don’t represent the teachings the of Islam.

A collective effort is key

However, Muslims shouldn’t be the only group ‘owning’ the problem. Instead, a collective effort from different people is required to eliminate Daesh.

Unity from different forces around the world will only make it harder for Daesh to commit acts of terror in the world.

Keeping our unity is crucial in times like this, as it prevents us from being plunged to an even more chaotic world– something we must all come together to avoid.

10 Facts About Jeanette Aw That Prove She’s More Than Goody-Two-Shoes Mo Jingjing

Who says locals have no talent?

Without a doubt, Jeanette Aw is a household name and one of the most popular Mediacorp artistes.

Aw had gained recognition since her role as dimwitted Mo Jingjing in Channel 8 drama Holland V in 2003, and has continued starring in more dramas. Nonetheless, she is known for her goody-two-shoe roles and the stereotype has stuck since.

But the actress is vamping it up for musical Beauty World. In the musical, Aw not only dances, but also sings in it, showcasing her multiple talents. Could this be a turning point in her career?

Besides taking the stage, Aw had also released her second book this year despite her jam-packed schedule.

This star is definitely more than just a pretty face – what lies beneath her girl next door façade?

MustShareNews finds out 10 fact about Jeanette Aw to prove she’s more than just a bland actress.

1. She’s breaking out of her typecast

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 10.22.52 amSource

In a re-staging of local iconic musical Beauty World, Aw plays a beautiful but vindictive cabaret queen Lulu. This time, the musical will be directed by Dick Lee.

This opportunity is a dream come true for Aw as she graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with honours in Theatre Studies and had always wanted to return to the stage. In spite of her star power, Aw also had to audition for her role.

Although she’s no newbie to the stage, this is her first musical, which means she has to sing, act, and dance altogether.

Beauty World started its run at Victoria Theatre on 13 Nov, and will close on 12 Dec.

2. She can dance

A trained classical dancer, Aw acted as President when she was with the NUS Dance Ensemble. Dick Lee also knows of Aw’s dance history, and decided to lengthen her dance number.

Besides performing for the stage, Aw has also acted as a dancer for the small screen. In 2005, Aw played Ding Yingying, a talented dancer who had to overcome her stage fright in The Rainbow Connection. Since Aw is a dancer herself, she acted in many of the dancing scenes in the drama.

In 2010 drama Breakout, the star also did a sizzling hot pole-dancing scene:

3. She is book smart

Aw was educated in Raffles Girls’ Primary School, Crescent Girls’ School, National Junior College, and then NUS.

4. She was the champion of a talent search contest

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 9.37.47 amSource

In 2001, Aw emerged the champion out of six contestants in talent search competition Route to Glamour, organized by the now defunct SPH Mediaworks. The same year, she was awarded Best Performer and Best Newcomer.

5. She has appeared in Taiwanese dramas

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 10.18.12 am

Aw played a supporting role in Taiwanese idol drama Kiss of a Toast II.

Source

With her sweet looks, Aw certainly has the makings of a Taiwanese idol. Unsurprisingly, she was invited to co-star in a Taiwanese drama in late 2001.

In 2002, she went to Taiwan again for the filming of idol drama Kiss of a Toast II.

6. Manages her own social media platforms and has over 1 million likes on Facebook

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 10.41.09 amSource

Some celebrities have managers to run their social media accounts, but certainly not Aw. She’s even the first and only Singaporean celebrity and Mediacorp artiste to reach 1 million likes on her Facebook page – truly befitting of her title as Caldecott’s social media queen. This year, she won Singapore Blog Awards for the 7th time and also bagged the Social Media Award for the second consecutive time.

Besides Facebook, the social media savvy artiste also connects with fans through various social media platforms. On Twitter, she has 63.1k followers and 235k followers on Instagram, overtaking Caldecott’s ah jie Fann Wong’s following of 224k.

The celeb even has her own blog so fans can keep up with her.

7. She is the author of a best-selling book

definitions-limitedSource

The actress released her first book titled Jeanette Aw: Definitions in February 2012. The book, which was written and illustrated by Aw herself, comprised of things she felt described or defined the person she was and how her mind was wired to allow readers to better understand her. It later topped the best-selling list of all major bookstores. A month later, she published Jeanette Aw: Definitions (Limited Edition).

Aw also released her second book named Sol’s World: Somebody to Love in May this year. The book chronicles Sol’s journey of self-discovery and is expressed through Aw’s artwork.

8. She is an all time favourite artiste

At the 2015 Star Awards, Aw received her All Time Favourite Artiste award, an achievement that came after bagging the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste 10 times in Star Awards over the years.

The award was made even more memorable as Aw unfortunately tripped on stage when she was on her way to receive the award.

GLwe07Source

9. She’s more popular than Rui En

In 2013, Aw won the Most Popular Local TV Artiste Award through the online voting of Singapore eAwards, beating ah jie Fann Wong and long-time winner Rui En.

The next year, she secured her position as Most Popular Local TV Artiste Award, as her votes surpassed all other actresses’ – including Rui En – since day one of the online voting.

This year, Aw clinched the Favourite Female Character award with her role as Zhao Fei Er in The Dream Makers, dethroning three-time winner Rui En. That night, she bagged a total of six awards, a first since the inception of Star Awards.

10. She loves kids

And she proves it with her actions.

Over the years, Aw has gone for several volunteer trips overseas to help the children there.

1251Source

In fact, she loves children so much she even considered majoring in child psychology when she was in university. When she participates in charity events, she also tends to veer towards those that involve children.

She has three godchildren now, and is not in a hurry to have any of her own kids yet. However, she would like to have one boy and one girl of her own when the time comes. The actress is in a long-time relationship with a Caucasian man named Marcus.

There is no doubt that Aw would make a good mother — she certainly has her way with children!

Who knew Singapore has such talent?

Aw has definitely come a long way since playing silly Mo Jingjing in Holland V and has established herself as an all-rounded artiste. Despite audiences having mixed reviews about Aw’s performance in musical Beauty World, we’re pretty sure this won’t be the last time we’ll see Aw on stage.

After Looking For 4 Years, Son Of Singaporean McRefugee Just Wants Her Home

Son relieved that mum is safe

After years of estrangement, reunion is finally impending for mother and son.

For years, Goh had been worried about his missing mother and feared that she was kidnapped or murdered.

Answers finally came to Edward Goh, after media reports of Mary Seow being a McRefugee in Hong Kong surfaced.

How it all unfolded

More than four years ago, Seow sold their home in Boon Keng out of the blue. Seow was a single parent, and lived with Goh together with her parents in the four-room flat.

However, things changed when Seow met a female Chinese national at Paya Lebar Methodist Church. The “friend” even managed to convince Seow into marrying a fellow Chinese national she claimed to be her uncle. Goh only found out about them when Seow brought the man home to stay with them.

He told The New Paper:

I didn’t even know his name. I was quite upset.

My grandmother was most upset because in the first place, she didn’t trust any of them (the two Chinese nationals).

To me, it was like he was invading our home. But I bottled up everything. I adopted a heck-care attitude.

Convinced to sell flat

The man fled in less than six months.

Her church “friend” then persuaded Seow to sell her flat, threatening that the man would have a right of share to the flat if she didn’t.

Seow later told her uncle, property agent Roland Seow, that the marriage was a sham and was never consummated.

Missing

The woman later cajoled Seow into using the money from the sale of the flat and her CPF savings to invest in a transportation company in China.

Seow started making solo trips to China.

In Feb 2011, Seow told Goh that she would be leaving for a month, but that became the last time Goh saw his mother.

Son wants to take mum home

When Goh was unable to reach his mother after multiple attempts, he filed a police report. Months later, Seow called Goh from China. She apologised as the money was depleted — she was cheated. She told Goh that she loved him, and hung up as he was at a loss for words.

The four years that ensued was a trying period for Goh:

We hear stories of syndicates in China that kidnap people and sell their organs; there was always this fear.

Eventually, over the years, I became mentally prepared that she was not coming back but at the same time, I also wished I was wrong.

Now that he finally has news of his mother, he intends to save up and head to Hong Kong.

I know she is scared to lose face (from) the guilt of the things that happened. I feel she really doesn’t want to share that with people.

The top priority is to bring her back. It is going to be very weird and awkward for both of us, there is no denying that.

But I don’t want her to be sorry to anyone, or for anything she has done. The past is the past, just forget about it, anything can be solved – that is what I wish to tell her.

Influence Asia Is The Awards Event Proving TV And Movie Stars Just Aren’t That Influential Anymore

Influence Asia is the new awards show that celebrates those people on social media

The age of social media has truly taken over.

We already know that the ease and accessibility of the Internet has given fame to some truly oddball characters.

For example, Pewdiepie owns the most subscribed YouTube channel, which started off with him recording himself playing video games.

To put things into perspective, he has 40 million subscribers — that’s more subscribers than the respective populations of Australia, Malaysia, and even Canada.

In Southeast Asia, however, our social media-famous people are more typical, focusing on specific niches like Beauty, Health, and Fitness.

And Influence Asia aims to honour these people.

Influence who?

Organised by Gushcloud, Influence Asia 2015 will present awards to influencers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines across 9 categories.

Btw, this awards show isn’t just for any rando off Instagram.

Nominees will have to fulfill a specific set of criteria — including a minimum number of followers, engagement, and brand endorsements — and face 3 rounds of judging, before facing the final panel, the Influence Asia Council.

The Singaporean panel of judges can count Edward Wong, Head Of Digital at advertising firm OMD; Victor Tan, Digital Manager at the National Youth Council; and filmmaker Jack Neo among their ranks.

Internet fame = real life fame

In Singapore, it seems being Internet-famous also leads to real life fame.

For example, Naomi Neo has 233k Instagram followers, beating Mediacorp queen Fann Wong by about 10k followers.

While follower numbers might just seem like arbitrary to you and I, these digits are everything to brands trying to reach out in a time when ads on traditional medium are having an increasingly limited impact.

Love it or hate it, influencers are a real thing. And they will only grow in numbers.

Influence Asia will take place at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on 7 Dec.

Can’t Find A Job? This Media-Shy Restaurant Boss Will Give You One

Restaurant owner displays act of kindness towards employees

Lu Weiqiang had 11 years of culinary experience, but had trouble securing employment due to his weight of 156 kg. The numerous job interviews he went through all amounted to nothing, eventually leading to a fear of not being able to fit inside a kitchen.

Cao Huomei spent her days sitting idly at a hawker centre all day long. At 81, she is no spring chicken. She was fitted with a pacemaker and had to undergo leg surgery.

Problem? Not for their boss.

The two employees though are grateful to their boss for finding a solution for all their troubles.

Mr Luo’s concerns of blocking the way in the kitchen were addressed when his boss shifted the cabinets to give him ample space to move about.

Mdm Cuo never had a problem when she asked for time off work as her boss always agreed to her requests of visiting the doctor. She admitted that her boss had no qualms about slower employees, and discrimination is not in her employer’s make-up.

Their experiences came to light after MyPaper picked up the story.

The good deeds aren’t new

This isn’t the first time the media-shy boss is making headlines with such deeds.

Earlier in Nov 2015, a customer complained to her boss citing health concerns about an employee who is afflicted with neurofibromatosis— a condition which causes the growth of thousands of benign tumours on his body and face.

The complaint fell on deaf ears as her boss was quick to jump to the defence of this employee.

Seems like “the customer is always right” does not apply here.

That incident was reported and even had Minister for Social and Family Development, Tan Chuan-Jin sharing it on his Facebook page.

Setting an example

When interviewed, the female employer of Mr Lu and Mdm Cao declined to be named.

Such is her modesty that she sets an example for all the other employers in Singapore. Her ability to empathise with the situation of her employees is a quality that bosses in our nation can adopt.

Moreover, adopting that quality will ultimately lead to a happier and vibrant working environment.

JJ Lin Hears A Busker Sing His Song While Shopping. He Joins Him And The Unbelievable Happens

A Wild JJ Lin Appears

JJ Lin (林俊傑) was randomly shopping with his friend when he heard a busker sing his song 江南. I’m sure this happens many times to pop stars and they just ignore it because they just end up getting swamped by fans and can’t enjoy the rest of their day. But what JJ Lin did instead, was incredible.

First he acknowledged that the busker was pretty good and clapped for him.

jjlin1
The moment JJ started singing, a huge crowd formed and girls started running towards him. You don’t hear a voice like that everyday. It was 100% vocal perfection from start to finish.

jjlin4
And then instead of hogging the limelight – JJ Lin let the busker share the moment with him.

jjlin2
Now it may not be such a big deal if you’re thinking from the perspective of a normal shopper who happened to be there. But for the busker, this was everything. Many buskers are struggling musicians looking for that big break. Most give up.

This moment may have given him the encouragement he needed. It is something that will inspire him for the rest of his life. All thanks to a simple gesture JJ Lin made.

And it did help. Because this humble street artist now has over 40,000 fans on his fan page. I’m not sure how many he started with but in a few hours, his likes jumped by over 20,000.

More about JJ Lin

A friend who went to the same JC as JJ Lin told me he used to see him singing songs in the SAJC canteen, trying to perfect his craft from a young age. Not many people thought he would be super famous one day, he was like one of those random guitar singing friends everyone has.

But JJ Lin was different because he worked super hard and now deserves all the success he has. He has 2.4 million fans on Facebook – that’s like half of Singapore’s population. For those wanting to know more about the song sang, it’s a JJ Lin classic than many people like to sing in KTV. It’s called 江南 (Jiang nan)/River South.

Am so proud to know JJ Lin is Singaporean.

Oh, and then after that, JJ Lin calmly announced he was going to continue shopping. What a hero.

CAG Chairman Almost Missed A Funeral Because Of SQ001 Bomb Scare, And His Goodbye Note Had Us In Tears

Liew Mun Leong nearly missed an important funeral because of bomb threat delay, then writes the feelingest of goodbyes

On Sunday evening (22 Nov), Singapore Airline (SIA) flight SQ001 was grounded for almost two hours, after a bomb threat was issued.

Turns out, Changi Airport Group (CAG) chairman Liew Mun Leong was on the plane at the time, and was due to attend a funeral of a dear friend, Mr Somkiat Lertpanyavit.

Mr Somkiat spent nearly 43 years behind the scenes at Changi Airport, and was Managing Director of Changi Airport Planners and Engineers (CAPE) until 17 Aug this year. He was also integral in the planning and design of Changi Airport.

So it was imperative that Mr Liew attend the funeral, given their close ties from working together on that little strip of runway located in the east of Singapore.

What really went down

Mr Liew was attending a conference at San Francisco and was due to return to Singapore on the morning of 23 Nov. However, Mr Somkiat’s funeral was scheduled for 3pm on 22 Nov, which meant Mr Liew would miss the event.

Mr-Liew-Mun-LeongSource

Thankfully, Mr Liew learnt that flight SQ001 would allow him to land in Singapore at 12pm on 22 Nov, which meant he could make the funeral after all. A ticket was quickly acquired, and Mr Liew thought he could deliver his last goodbye and eulogy without any further drama.

Except for that bomb threat.

When SQ001 landed, the captain opted to taxi around Changi Airport — a decision that puzzled Mr Liew. Because he is a man of connections, Mr Liew soon found out that there was a bomb threat on the very plane he was on.

Someone had made a threat that there was a bomb on board SQ001! Oh my god, not at this time. Did I deliberately change my flight to face a bomb threat?

He also had the composure to prevent any panic.

I was asked by a fellow passenger what was happening. I didn’t tell her what I knew as this might have unnecessarily alarmed her. Just extra security, I said.

Led to Lavender

Thankfully, Mr Liew was allowed an expeditious delivery to the gate, and was whisked away to the casket company at Lavender at 1.40pm.

He arrived at the wake at 2.03pm, and was allowed to say his goodbye to his dear friend before the coffin was sealed.

It was huge relief as I would never be able to forgive myself if I failed to see Somkiat off.

Between the danger of potentially being on a plane with an attached bomb, and the anxiety of missing out on the last goodbye of a good friend, Mr Liew could not decide which worried him more.

Was it fate that I came to know about an alternative earlier flight home and that I was able to secure the last passenger seat? But I believe that it was also fate that recognised the dedication and contribution of Somkiat and it somehow ensured that things worked out eventually for me to accompany him on his last journey.

Rest In Peace, Mr Somkiat.

10 Random Facts About Homegrown Talent JJ Lin You Never Knew You Needed To Know

$

Multi-talented JJ Lin is more than just a singer

Last week (20 Nov), JJ Lin was out shopping when he heard a busker perform his song “River South”. He then surprised the busker by singing a duet with him, and a clip of this performance went viral online, attracting over 4.6million views.

From the footage, it seems like JJ has no airs around him, and has certainly not let success get into his head.

There’s more to this talented musician. Here are 10 things you never knew about him.

1. His English name is…

Bruce Wayne.

Although he is popularly known as JJ Lin – his stage name derived from his Hanyu Pinyin name Lin Junjie – family and friends address him as Wayne.

Maybe he’s secretly Batman in disguise?

2. He’s a family man

The Taiwan-based singer might have been away from home for a long period of time, but he has constantly been missing his family. At JJ Lin’s Timeline: Genesis World Tour homecoming concert held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in September this year, JJ invited three family members – his mother, father, and brother – on stage to perform with him during his encore.

3. He wants to get married soon

At the same concert, JJ reminisced about his time in Singapore. He spoke about his music dreams, family, friends, and love — this was where he had his first girlfriend. The 34-year-old also expressed slight envy that his friends were settling down and starting their own families.

With his charisma, it seems like the musician would have no problems finding a wife – during his concert, fans were heard declaring their love for the singer more than once, with some even expressing their interest in bearing him children.

4. He is faithful

The Taiwanese media has constantly painted JJ out to be a playboy, linking him to names like singer Linda Liao, model-host Lilian Chen, and host Weng Tzy Mann.

But he has proved otherwise with his actions.

Check out this video dated back to 2004, when JJ first expressed admiration for singer Hebe Tien.

Since then, his long-time crush on Hebe has been much publicised, with Chinese news reports quoting him as saying that he had been “admiring Hebe secretly for 10 years”.

In July 2013, JJ publicly declared his love for Hebe at his concert at the Taipei Arena. On the day of the concert, JJ was egged on by his special guest Jolin Tsai to give Hebe some soy milk and dough fritters — the name of one of the songs he performed. He also invited her to sit on a specially constructed swing with him, and serenaded her with his song “Little Dimple”.

5. He has his own lifestyle brand

With JJ’s passion for fashion, pop art, and street scene, the brand SMG was born. SMG is an acronym for “Still Moving UnDer Gun firE”, or SMUDGE. SMG recognises life’s stressful moments and how one should still move on despite feeling that “he or she is “under gunfire” at times”, and aims to reflect these beliefs into their products’ design.

SMG used to have a store at Cathay Cineleisure, but has since closed.

Nonetheless, the brand is still available online. Its flagship store can also be found in Taipei.

7. He broke a Guinness record

In July 2007, he signed 3,052 copies of his album “West Side” in just 2.5 hours, earning him an autograph-signing world record. This averages out to 2.7 seconds per CD signed.

Further, he was not allowed to eat or drink during the signing.

8. He can draw

Prior to the 2007 Guinness Record event, one would have expected JJ to rest his hands to rise up to the autograph challenge.

However, this was what he had been doing:

It was supposedly a self-portrait, but we think it looks more like an anime character.

Still, A+ for effort.

9. He wrote a song out of jealousy and it became an award-winning song

One of JJ’s best-remembered ballads, Remember/记得, was penned when he was 18. Behind this composition lies a bittersweet story – JJ wrote this song out of jealousy after his then-girlfriend in junior college told him she dreamt that she was a mutual friend’s love interest.

At the 17th Compass Awards Presentation, the song even won the Top Local Chinese Pop Song trophy. After his win, JJ did not forget to thank his ex-girlfriend who gave him the inspiration:

10. He is insecure about revealing his forehead

If you’re observant enough, you would have noticed that JJ usually sports his signature fringe in most/ all of his pictures posted online.

Screen Shot 2015-11-23 at 3.05.28 pmSource

Like some girls without their long luscious locks, JJ feels unconfident without his fringe.

Now we know star power does not necessarily equate to confidence.

Straight out of Singapore

Screen Shot 2015-11-23 at 3.52.05 pmSource

Now, who says locals don’t have talent?

JJ might have made it big, but he has certainly not forgotten to stay humble and down-to-earth.

We’re proud that JJ Lin is Singaporean.

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. –cues 2010 YOG song

Could Public Transport Actually Be Nationalized? ST Thinks So.

ST’s poll could mean a semi-national public transport system might just happen

On Monday morning (23 Nov), The Straits Times released a poll suggesting that Singaporeans are open to having a government-run national transport system.

stnationalpt
Source

Sure, ST might have only interviewed all of 50 people, which cannot possibly be a representative sample of Singapore at large.

Sure, only 24 respondents agreed that public transport should be nationalized, a number that only figures to 48% of the results.

Nonetheless, Singapore’s national broadsheet could have just as easily published an article with the headline “Less than half polled want public transport nationalization” —  the fact that the opposite angle was ran is not out of coincidence.

Experts suggest a hybrid model instead

The idea of nationalizing public transport isn’t new.

The Worker’s Party has called for a national transport re-nationalization several times, usually in anticipation of General Elections, and once again reiterated their proposal before GE2015.

Experts interviewed by ST suggest a slightly different model from all-out nationalization.

Instead, the Government could own assets such as the rail tracks, buses, and trains, but outsource day-to-day operations to 3rd party operators.

Such a system is already in the works, with Tower Transit confirmed to take over the reins of 26 bus services from 2016. These services will run from Bulim Bus Depot, and service the west side of Singapore.

India’s Prime Minister dropped by for dinner

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend for the ASEAN summit, and he couldn’t resist dropping by Singapore since he was in the region anyway.

After delivering a lecture at Shangri-La, PM Modi presumably felt a little peckish for some vegetarian in town.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met up with the second most popular politician on Twitter, and brought him out to dinner at Komala Vilas in Little India.

Sounds like PM Lee was describing Singapore’s short 9-day campaigning period to a bemused PM Modi.

Ah, if only that was possible in India, which had an electorate of 814.5 million in 2014.

Of course, no informal meeting of politicians would be complete without a selfie.

Thankfully, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung was there to capture a behind-the-scenes moment.

Here’s the thing though: why bring an Indian to eat Indian food in Singapore? Would PM Lee have brought Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang for pho at Joo Chiat?

Muhd Shahrizan targets gold at ASEAN Para Games

Born with spastic diplegia — a form of cerebral palsy which mainly affects the lower extremities of his body, including the legs, hips and pelvis — hasn’t stopped Muhd Shahrizan from targeting a medal at this year’s ASEAN Para Games (APG).

The 21-year-old will be representing our country in the sport of Boccia.

So, what is Boccia?

Boccia is a sport that is played on a hard surface and the players must throw or roll the ball into the court using their hands or feet. The main aim of boccia is to get your (team’s) ball(s) closest to the Jack (white target ball).

11424004_10153109661552886_2228918650345815887_o

Source

Shahrizan’s introduction to the sport wasn’t all smooth sailing, as he was initially dismissive of the game comparing it to the traditional game of marbles. His first encounter with the sport was when he witnessed a group of his schoolmates deep in focus taking turns to throw red and blue leather balls at a single white one located a short distance away.

It was only nine years later at the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS) that he would come across the sport, playing it on a sudden desire.

He soon developed an interest for the sport and eventually decided to take it up at a competitive level.

His pillar of support

A decision that has seen himself been selected for Singapore’s 10-member boccia team for December’s APG on home soil. His selection was well-received by his grandparents, whom Shahrizan shares a close bond with.

Shahrizan, an only child, has been under the care of his grandparents since he was a young boy. With both his parents out earning a living, the APG athlete had to learn how to live independently. Having his grandparents however, has smoothened that process.

Shahrizan cites his grandparents as his heroes, and he gets teary-eyed when mentioning them. He intends to dedicate a medal to them if victorious at the games.

However, Shahrizan displays a steelier side at training.

Despite being a new member of the team, he isn’t afraid to chide his team-mates if he feels they have not be giving their all. Such is his commitment towards excelling in the APG. He believes APG is a platform for disabled athletes to let people know that they are capable of doing positive things — to change the perception of people towards disabled athletes.

Show him your support

Overcoming challenges has been part and parcel of Shahrizan’s life. His story is an example of how success can be achieved even in the most difficult circumstances.

All we need to do is work hard and never lose faith. And we hope Singaporeans will show faith in our Paralympic athletes by going down to support them at this year’s APG.

10 Serina Wee Facts Every Fanboy Needs To Know

Chiobu zeh zeh Serina Wee will be locked up for five years

In case you’re living under a rock, the six church leaders of City Harvest Church (CHC) have finally been sentenced.

Former CHC finance manager Serina Wee will be put behind bars for five years. Understandably, many are devastated that they won’t get to see their goddess arriving fashionably in court anymore.

But for all you Serina Wee fans out there, fret not.

This is not the end of Serina Wee – she’ll be out in the blink of an eye. To fulfill those with an insatiable appetite for all things Serina Wee in the meantime, we found out 10 facts about Serina Wee that you never knew.

1. Her selfie skills are as good as PM Lee’s

PM Lee, you’ve got a contender.

Oh wait, criminally gorgeous Wee won’t be able to take selfies once she moves into Changi resort – here are some for you to ogle at while they last:

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 4.57.42 pmSource
Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 4.59.20 pmSource
Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 4.59.45 pmSource

2. She loves taking OOTDs

Like any other girl, she likes to dress up – and then flaunt it on social media with an #OOTD, of course. It’s no wonder that she caused a stir with her chio face and stylish outfits during trials.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 10.42.07 amSource

Now that she’s been sentenced, this OOTD would perhaps be more appropriate:

3. She has her own blogshop

And naturally so. Why not parlay all the public attention on her courtroom #OOTDs into a business opportunity?

Together with her DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) long-time friend a.k.a City Harvest Church’s (CHC) finance manager Sharon Tan, the duo started their own blogshop selling apparel and accessories – Missy Stella.

And judging from these interviews, it seems like Missy Stella was well received among the ladies:

P.S. If you’ve never heard of Wee’s sweet voice, fast forward to 0:56 to do so.

Even celebrity and church member Jacelyn Tay is a customer of the blogshop.

If you were one of the lucky ones, you might have been able to snag some of the piece Wee wore to court.

Source

But to all the other aspiring Serina Wees, it’s still not too late to grab trendy apparel to emulate Wee’s style. One question on our minds though – who would run Missy Stella when Wee and Tan are in jail?

4. Serina Wee interviewed Serina Wee

Yes, you read that right.

1796541_714891521865794_281735611_nSource

In a puzzling interview, Wee was interviewed by her own blogshop. Anyhow, the exclusive interview allowed us to know more about Wee.

For one, we know that Wee hates lizards. She also has a sweet tooth, and has a week spot for dark chocolate cakes and ice cream.

The original post has been made private, but you can still read it here, thanks to inSing.

5. She became a Christian after attending her first service at CHC

In 1995, the 18-year-old had just completed her GCE A-level examinations. The same year, she joined CHC and accepted Christianity after she attended her very first service.

In 1999, she started as an assistant accountant with the church, after she graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Accountancy.

6. She was Sun Ho’s backup singer

In April this year, Wee revealed in court that she was a backup singer for two of Sun Ho’s Christian albums.

Serina Wee:

Sun was involved in Christian albums the church produced every year… and I was involved as a backup singer in two of her albums.

fLoDveSource

Things might have been different if Ho was Wee’s backup singer instead. Who knows? CHC might even have made a profit and there would be no court case today.

Peace out.

7. Her husband was Sun Ho’s dance instructor

In case you didn’t know, Wee is already married. Sorry EDMWers.

970341_581541698534111_1006961974_nSource

Wee’s husband, Kenny Low, is the founder of performing arts centre O School. He was also Ho’s first dance instructor and had even travelled with her as a dancer for her Gospel outreach concerts.

8. She was listed as the secretary of over 50 companies

serina-wee-02Source

In the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s (ACRA) records, Wee was listed as the secretary of over 50 companies – several linked to the church and its leaders. This includes fashion retailers Ed Hardy, Skin Couture, and even Xtron – Sun Ho’s artist management firm.

9. She is the sizzling hot mother of three

576749_581539858534295_1021679714_nSource

With Wee’s hourglass figure, who would have thought she’s the mother of three children?

In 2012, The Straits Times reported that Wee had given birth to her third child, a boy, in her three-storey Upper East Coast home. This was a couple of weeks before she got charged.

10. A dentist so obsessed with her, he had to buy the domain serinawee.com

Why would a dentist need a domain with her name for?

1499533_683241505030796_51363852_nSource

And no, the site has nothing about Serina Wee whatsoever.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 4.38.02 pm
Source

Some stalking online revealed that the dentist is also a writer, which probably explains the strange, unrelated information available on serinawee.com.

The dentist-writer also has his own domain chanjoonyee.com, where he writes everything from poems to advice columns.

Why he bought a domain with Serina Wee’s name remains a mystery.

Most gorgeous criminal

Without a doubt, Serina Wee’s name will go down in history as Singapore’s chio-est criminal.

Further, the talented Wee can sing, dance, and even falsify accounts – what more can a man ask for? No wonder she’s a goddess in the hearts of many.

Is Serina Wee a goddess or a jailbird?

What do you think?

Guarantor’s son was allegedly from ‘Rivervale Secondary School’

On Monday (23 Nov) morning, staff and students of North Vista Secondary School arrived on campus to a rude shock — somebody had splashed paint on the school’s wall, defacing the school badge and name.

According to the report by Today, posters containing details of a man and his son were found at the scene, along with accusations of the son being a student of ‘Rivervale Secondary School’.

Except there isn’t a school of that name anywhere in Singapore.

trollSource

This is the work of master trolls, people.

Son was named as guarantor to father’s debt

The man mentioned in the posters allegedly owes loansharks $2,500, and has his son listed as guarantor to the debt. However, according to North Vista Secondary principal Regina Lee, the pair have nothing to do with the school situated at Rivervale Link.

The police have been notified, and are currently investigating the case of mischief.

Interestingly, (or not) North Vista Secondary was a nomination centre for GE2015.

This Heart-Wrenching Poem From The View Of A Foreign Worker Made Us Stop And Think

The plight of immigrant workers seen through this poem

Foreign workers have been the backbone of Singapore’s workforce for a good number of years. They perform the tasks that most of us will not even consider.

Despite this, many Singaporeans continue to under appreciate their contributions and are impervious to the plight that they go through.

Instagram Photo

This poem presumably sees an immigrant worker responding to an interrogation by a policeman as to why he is sitting there.

His response is a heart-wrenching, and he’s clearly in a state of distress. This could be a number of reasons ranging from financial issues or maybe he is just plain homesick.

The poem showcases us the troubles our foreign workers may face and how lonely they are in dealing with all these troubles.

This piece of writing highlights to us that there is a greater need to help them.

Related: We asked some foreign workers what they thought of Singapore. This is what they said.

Spare them a thought

So, if you happen to chance upon a foreign worker the next time you are on your way to the coffee shop, do not hesitate to flash them a smile or even ask him them how their day is going.

A little concern might not solve all their problems, but hey, its the thought that counts.

Remember The Media-Shy Restaurant Boss Who Gives Second Chances? Well, She’s Not That Shy Anymore

Identity of kind restaurant boss revealed

This female restaurant boss garnered attention when she leapt to the defence of her employee who had a condition of neurofibromatosis— a condition which causes the growth of thousands of benign tumours on the body and face, against a customer who had complained about the condition.

Her act of good deeds doesn’t just stop there.

An overweight chef was hired by her despite facing numerous job rejections due to his obesity. This lady boss also gave employment to an elderly woman after noticing her sitting idly all day.

So, who is this kind soul?

Her name is Ms Sharon Guan Xue-er. Her good deeds have prompted netizens to search for the restaurant as they wanted to boost the business of a company that has values which are morally right.

After reading about her story, netizens revealed the location of her restaurant — Whampoa Keng Fish Head Steamboat’s Rangoon Road outlet — on Facebook. The main outlet is located in Balestier Road.

rangoon

Source

Though some of you might be interested in patronising her restaurant, we aren’t entirely confident if you can even catch a glimpse of the introverted Ms Guan.

Such was her shyness that she revealed feelings of discomfort when asked to come clean with her identity after initially declining. Her agreement came after much convincing by customers and the media.

Her agenda in revealing her identity

Ms Guan’s objective for coming forward was because she hoped that her actions would be able to inspire more people to be kind towards the unfortunate and the needy. This role model also wants companies to not discriminate when hiring staff as everyone deserves an equal opportunity in society.

Despite being her own boss, Ms Guan does not exclude herself from the duties in her restaurant.

She is in-charge of taking orders and entertaining the guests. Moreover, the 54-year-old is a getai singer and regularly participates in events organised by Tanjong Pagar Community Centre to entertain residents at old folks’ homes for free.

A role model

With her list of good deeds never-ending, Ms Guan’s efforts are just inspiring as she leads the way in how we can be a society which is kind, caring and inclusive.

We hope that more Singaporeans will follow in the footsteps of this helpful and humble lady.

10 Things Kong Hee Owns, Thanks To Your Money

Kong Hee Fatt Choy

Kong Hee is facing 8 years in jail for embezzling church funds.

Without the church funds, Kong might not be able to own luxury apartments like his Sentosa Cove penthouse.

Kong might not be a billionaire like Peter Lim, but what he owns is still bound to attract the envy of many.

Here are 10 things that con Kong Hee owns, because you’ve been lining his pocket:

1. City Harvest Church (CHC)

20120627.093452_sph_chc_churchSource

In 1989, City Harvest Church was founded by Kong Hee.

In 2015, Kong might soon have to set up Changi Harvest Church.

In the meantime, newly-ordained pastor a.k.a. his wife Sun Ho will be taking over his duties. Who knows – eight years later, Kong’s Changi Harvest Church might just be another successful venture.

2. CHC’s congregate

The judge might have found Kong to be guilty, but his congregate has unwavering faith in him. Through the testimonies of his church members, the power of Kong Hee’s true leadership can be witnessed.

3. The congregate’s money

uparcSource

The church pastor is certainly no church mouse. We can’t be sure how much money exactly he has, because it’s probably more than we’ll ever see in our entire lives.

 4. Sentosa cove penthouse

20150703_KHSource

In 2007, Kong, together with Indonesian tycoon Wahju Hanafi, bought a 5,242-sq ft penthouse at Sentosa Cove’s The Oceanfront. Although both had to paid monthly installments of $17,000, the hefty sum is justified by the facilities available.

The penthouse comes with a huge rooftop infinity pool and overlooks the upmarket One Degree 15 Marina Club. That’s not all — it even comes with a private lift and four rooms on the ground level, including a master bedroom. In July this year, Kong listed his property for sale, with an asking price of $10 million.

5. Sun Ho

sunho_konghee_cityharvest_chc_crossover_plastic_0Source

Who needs Peter Lim’s chiobu daughter Kim Lim when you have a talented wife like Sun Ho?

I mean, just check out this risqué music video:

Groovy dance moves, a hot bod, and ahem, a good singing voice – what more can Kong possibly ask for? He’s got a pop star for a wife!

Hopefully he doesn’t end up like Bill.

6. 39,457 bottles of China Wine

Okay, so it’s just a random number.

But since his wife endorses China wine, we’d imagine his house to be filled with China wine.

up0j4Source/ Source

Good stuff.

7. 32,000 copies of Sun Ho’s albums

sunhocdSource

Being a Hollywood A-lister, Ho constantly had to shuttle between Singapore and Hollywood since 2003.

What’s a lonely man like Kong gotta do when his sun is away?

Sweep all her CDs off the shelves so her album can be top on the music charts he can listen and sing along to her music all day long.

Everybody, China wine! Everybody, China wine!

Bet he didn’t expect himself to be facing the music now.

8. 2 companies

Kong and wife own two companies. One is International Harvest, a provider of motivational courses as well as corporate training services. The other is a fashion company named Skin Couture with three boutiques in Singapore – now defunct Ed Hardy at the Heeren, Skin at Great World City, and Christian Audigier at Ion.

9. A doctorate

In 2008, Kong was conferred the Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Seoul’s Hansei University.

Hansei University started as the Full Gospel Theological College and is known for choral music.

Hansei University is also ranked 6135 out of 11,000 universities in the world in the University web ranking, while the National University of Singapore sits at 75th position.

Not bad, Dr Kong Hee.

not_bad_obama_meme-www.memegen.comSource

10. 13 luxury apartments

Remember the Horizon Towers saga back in 2007?

The Strata Titles Board (STB) dismissed the owners’ application for a collective sale over a technicality – the submitted applications lacked pages bearing three consenting owners’ signatures.

Most of the owners wanted the High Court to overturn the dismissal, while a group of individuals wanted to have their say as well.

As reported by The Straits Times:

One is a group of individuals – including pop star Ho Yeow Sun and her husband, Kong Hee – who own 13 units. All signed the sale deal and said they wanted to participate in the hearing to ensure the sale goes through.

Maybe Kong wanted to buy more apartments to build the house of God?

Thank you for your money

After the verdict was out, Kong took to his social media platforms to post this:

However, we suspect there might be a typo, and have taken the liberty to correct it for Kong.

CUQTockUsAIVpof copySource

You’re welcome, Kong. Hee Hee.

He might be going to jail, but in 8 years’ time he’ll be out a free bird. And still richer than you who slog hard at work everyday.

Such is life.

What do you think of Kong Hee?

If you’re more interested in goddess Serina Wee instead of Kong Hee, here are 10 facts about Serina Wee you need to know.

9 Times LHL And Modi Were The Ultimate #BroGoals

India and Singapore’s Prime Ministers seem to have plenty of fun together

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spent a couple of days on our sunny island on an official visit. Of course, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was around to show the VVIP around Singapore.

According to the press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PM Modi’s schedule was immensely packed — he unveiled a commemorative stamp, delivered a lecture, and even visited ITE College Central.

And PM Lee was with him all the way.

Which made us think: could this be the beginning of a beautiful bromance?

So we looked a little deeper into their interactions, and discovered just how deep this bromance goes

1. When they bro-ed out over supper at Little India

Many Singaporeans head to Little India when feeling peckish for a bite late at night, and PMs Lee and Modi are no different.

Ho Ching looks really pleased as well.

Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung, was also at the scene, and he provided an absolute behind-the-scenes gem. You’ll see what we mean later.

2. When they both took selfies of their night out and posted on their respective Facebook pages

Of course, they had to take selfies to mark the occasion.

Acting Minister Ong managed to snap this little tidbit of PM Modi figuring out how to take a picture.

But why bring PM Modi out for Indian food though? No disrespect to the good people at Komala Vilas, but we’re pretty sure the Indian food back home is much better.

nahendra1

3. When they tweeted each other like normal human beings

After that little Little India escapade, PM Modi tweeted about his experience and thanked PM Lee for his hospitality.

Of course, PM Lee absolutely had to reply.

4. When they were super proud of what they made at ITE College Central

Just look at how these leaders of countries beaming. We’re not entirely sure what those things are, but they look excellent.

Also, nice matching eyewear.

5. When PM Lee gave PM Modi a 50-year-old newspaper

After both Prime Ministers signed a strategic partnership, PM Lee presented PM Modi with a copy of the front page of Tamil Murasu on 11 August 1965. That front page is particularly significant, as it announced India’s recognition of Singapore as an independent country, and serves as a symbol of strong Singapore-India relations.

Except PM Modi doesn’t speak Tamil.

modimurasu

Whoops.

6. When PM Modi returned the gesture by gifting PM Lee with an old map

In return for that old newspaper, PM Modi presented a map of Singapore off the National Archives of India dated 1849.

We can only assume PM Lee frowned at the conspicuous absence of Pasir Ris on the map.

Here’s a closer look at the map:

7. When they both signed a bunch of stuff

Both Prime Ministers signed a grand total of 10 Memorandums of Understanding, which probably means they had to switch pens halfway.

The memorandums covered a variety of topics, ranging from the loan of artifacts, to defence cooperation, and combating drug trafficking.

8. When they unintentionally clasped their hands at the same time

After signing 10 Memorandums of Understanding, both Prime Ministers were understandably pleased with themselves and stood by to look at their handiwork as cameras clicked away.

Then this happened.

lhlmodiclasping

This pair are such bros they even clasp hands in sync.

9. When PM Lee was super happy for his friend

Turns out, these two aren’t recent friends.

When PM Modi took office in 2014, PM Lee took to Facebook to congratulate a successful campaign.

The epitome of bromance

These two leaders are so tight, we wouldn’t be surprised if they had their own secret handshake.
