Downtown Line 2 Experiences Train Delays On Third Day Of Opening; Netizens Are Rather Displeased

The new Downtown Line 2 is already experiencing train delays

The second phase of the Downtown Line (DTL2), run by Singapore Mass Rapid Transport (SMRT), was officially opened last Sunday (27 Dec).

This morning (29Dec), The Straits Times happily reported that that “the DTL2 is a relief for Bukit Panjang Citizens,” saying that it has shortened the train journeys of residents, as well as provided convenience to people.

Ironically, a few hours later, DTL2 started experiencing train delays after The Straits Times’ premature announcement that the DTL2 was functioning properly.

The DTL2 rides would be free from the day of its opening (27 Dec) until 1 Jan 2016. However, it seems like there’s no free lunch in the word —  the free rides will surely come at the expense of longer commuting time due to train delay.

Types of people who experienced train delays

It’s no secret that Singaporeans are champion grumblers — with train delays, many naturally took to social media to air their grievances.

Here are 5 types of commuters-turned-angry-netizens live reporting on the DTL2’s long delay:

1.The emo commuter

Of course, no emo tweet is complete without a sad face at the back.

2. The sarcastic commuter

Of course SMRT would screw up on [the]opening week of DTL2.”

The level of sarcasm is too high here. LOL.

3. The slightly displeased commuter who wonders if SMRT uses a tweetbot

This kind of commuter would go on Twitter to complain and express his disappointment.

4. The concerned commuter

The concerned commuter would give advice — such as staying off the DTL2 due to 20-minute intervals between stations — to other commuters.

However, they will also showcase their dissatisfaction by scornfully thanking SMRT for making them late.

5. The enraged commuter

This type of commuter would start blaming the government to vent their frustration on MRT breakdowns.

In this case, the enraged commuter scolds KBW (probably referring to Khaw Boon Wan, we dunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) for giving “cheap talk and lip service” as the train still breaks down.

Is the DTL2 a boon or bane?

It seems quite the nightmare to be stuck on the train with expected 20-minute intervals as opposed to the normal interval of 3 minutes.

Prior to the Downtown Line 2’s official opening, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan had already warned commuters to expect several problems. Despite today’s train delays on DTL2, everything else is “so far so good”, according to the Minister’s Facebook post.

DTL2: so far so good. More than 360 SBST staff were at various stations to help guide passengers. Behind the scene,…

Posted by Khaw Boon Wan on Monday, December 28, 2015

In addition, let’s not forget the unsung heroes who worked tirelessly while we were asleep, just so we can love our rides.

7 Appalling Facts About The Yishun Cat Abuse Case That You Should Know

$

Alleged cat killer finally caught

Looks like the cat is out of the bag, and the cat murderer can no longer hide from authorities.

The game of cat and mouse is over — authorities have finally found the suspect after all the calls for in-vehicle footage and citizens to come up front with information on the elusive killer. The suspect was nabbed on Sunday (27 Dec) at Yishun Ring Road.

The accused, Lee Wai Leong, was charged in court for animal cruelty for throwing a cat over the parapet of the 13th floor at Block 115B Yishun Ring Road at about 10.30am on 30 Oct.

Many cat lovers and Yishun residents are probably heaving a sigh of relief now.

The suspect would return to court on 12 Jan next year, but here are 7 shocking facts about the Yishun cat abuse case you should know before the final verdict is out:

1. The suspect acted on 19 victims

The most recent victim was drowned to death on 26 Dec near Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). The rest were killed by mutilation, blunt force to the spine or lower back, being thrown from heights or strangulation.

2. Cats do not have 9 lives; only 2 kitties survived

Only 2 feline victims survived the bloodthirsty killer’s attempts on their lives.

On 22 Dec, tabby Oli was discovered with fractured legs at Yishun Block 170, by a neighbourhood cat rescue group Yishun 326 Tabby cat. The fortunate feline managed to survive the attack and required extensive surgery to recover.

The first feline victim survived the attack near Northland Primary School at Yishun Avenue 4.

3. Our cat lover MP helped in the effort to find the killer

Louis Ng, who is a Member of Parliament, as well as the founder of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), helped to assemble a grassroots fast response team to gather information and apprehend the sick killer.

Mr Ng said he was “delighted” that there was progress in the investigation and urged people with information to “step forward”. He also called for people to work together to “improve public safety, strengthen our animal protection efforts and safeguard the welfare of animals.”

4. The killer struck mostly around his area

The suspect is said to be a resident of Block 115B on Yishun Ring Road.

He was also apprehended along Yishun Ring Road where he claimed at least 5 victims. According to the diagram below, cases 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12 were clustered along or in the vicinity of Yishun Ring Road, while on 12 Dec another cat was thrown from a multi-storey car park at Block 115B Yishun Ring Road.

5. The suspect is sentenced to remand at IMH

The prosecution had requested to remand the suspect Lee Wai Leong at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for two weeks for psychiatric assessment. Lee, who is described to be a small built man, would return to court on 12 Jan.

Meanwhile, the scaredy cat did not enter any pleas to his single charge.

Many have said that this sentence is far too light, considering that he had taken 17 lives in a whopping total of 19 abuse cases since September.

6. Lee faces only one charge under the Animals and Birds Act

Lee is charged with animal cruelty under the Animals and Birds Act. If found guilty of animal cruelty, a first-time offender can be fined up to $15,000 and/or be jailed up to 18 months. For the second offence, the maximum penalty is $30,000 and/ or jail term up to 3 years.

7. He was eventually nabbed thanks to a surveillance camera footage and identification by volunteers

The Ang Mo Kio Police Division and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Agency (AVA) managed to establish the suspect’s identity via surveillance footage and a Cat Welfare Society (CWS) volunteer’s identification of the man.

CWS is a volunteer non-profit organization that rescues strays and advocates the welfare of Singapore’s stray cats.

Earlier on, there were reports that Yishun residents knew who the suspect was, but could not do anything to charge him without substantial evidence.

What next?

Some animal rights groups are still under the impression that there are more than one cat abuser. Janet Sum, the founder of Yishun 326 Tabby Cat said:

We will continue to stay vigilant as we believe the killings are not the job of one man.

The volunteer organisation has praised the cooperation between the police and AVA as “a landmark protocol of cooperation between AVA and the police in handling animal cruelty cases”.

In light of the new laws on animal cruelty from last year, CWS expressed their thoughts:

We do hope that with new laws in place, they will map out a reasonable fine, and will not let (perpetrators of) a crime like this get off too easily.

Members of the public with information about the deaths of the cats may call the AVA at 1800-476-1600 or e-mail ava_cawc@ava.gov.sg.

You Know Ah, Netizens Are Up In Arms Over The New Junior College Named Eunoia

The new kid on the block

Yesterday (29 Dec), the Ministry of Education (MOE) unveiled the name of its new junior college (JC) — Eunoia Junior College.

The new JC will be offering an Integrated Programme (IP), and will start taking in its first cohort of students in 2017 from CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School, Catholic High School, and Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS). Nonetheless, the school will also accept O-level students from other secondary schools.

The new JC will be temporarily sited at the former Raffles Junior College campus in Mount Sinai until end 2019, when its permanent campus housed at the junction of Sin Ming Avenue and Marymount Road is ready.

The word Eunoia, which stemmed from Greek roots, means beautiful thinking and goodwill towards others.

Eunoia whut?

Just one question – how in the world do you pronounce it?

Fortunately, MOE has taken to Facebook to share the correct pronunciation of the word.

So now you know, ya?

If you still don’t know, maybe this will help:

The Internet responds

With a name like that, of course the Internet had to respond.

1. The one who has already thought of the school cheer

Easiest cheer ever to remember. Future Eunoia JC students will have no excuse to not cheer for their school!

Although the Chinese characters should be 知道, we get the drift. Here’s Eunoia JC’s Chinese name — a less memorable name compared to the one the netizen had guessed:

The life of an ex-convict living under the bridge

Sabrina Poon and her production team had produced a moving 12-minute long documentary named Ruslan, which was shown at the 6th Singapore Indie Documentary Fest in 2013. The documentary was made during their second year in a documentary production module.

This documentary, which is now available on video platform Viddsee, tells the life story of Ruslan Bin Sidek, a man who had been living under the bridge for about 14 to 15 years (at the time the documentary was filmed).

Well, at least he does not have to pay for Housing Development Board (HDB) loans.

Ruslan revealed his life story about being an ex-convict, saying that he was wrongfully caught for housebreaking and served eight years in jail for it. Later on, he was arrested for drugs and went to Petapis Halfway House where he started to change for the better under the guidance of his advisor Ridzal Taufiq.

In the video, the muscular man shared why he chose to live under the bridge.

Lack of acceptance from society

Being an ex-offender, he found it difficult to integrate into society. In addition, his low education level and tattoos deterred potential employers from hiring him.

Speaking in Malay, he said,

I have been free ever since I found this place.

He also shared his love for the sea, and that living under a bridge allowed him to catch fishes and prawns for a living. Thus, he was able to live apart from society under the bridge.

On the bright side…

Ruslan has since tried to help other ex-convicts return to society by allowing them to stay under the bridge with him.

Further, the man had turned over a new leaf and mentioned plans to find a proper job such as being a lifeguard.

Cheers to Ruslan who managed to turn his life around with his resilient attitude and determination.

“Superstar” Steven Lim Gets Pranked By A Cross-Dressing Male Blogger After His Viral Girlfriend Request Video

Infamous Steven Lim got trolled by Gushcloud Blogger

With our dear kor kor Uncle Steven Lim’s face splashed all over the Internet after his viral video, everyone should know that he is searching for a girlfriend by now.

In a video that garnered over 700,000 views, Steven Lim requested for pretty girls aged 18 – 22 to apply for the position of his “girlfriend” in order to cure his broken heart. (Reminds us of the song Hotline Bling by Canadian rapper Drake).

Mr Handsome, who claimed that people commented he looks like actor Tay Pinghui, also added that he has “business, money, really cool motorcycle and plenty of love and time to pei (accompany) you”.

If you guys aren’t nauseated by now, the next part is even more exciting.

Uncle Steven took to Facebook to brag about the overwhelming response to his search for a girlfriend, adding that he might “be your best New Year present”.

But… what if a pretty boy auditioned for the role of his girlfriend instead?

Hehehe.

Pranked by blogger Kife Wee

Little did Steven Lim know he would be pranked by Gushcloud blogger Kife Wee.

To make his female identity more convincing, Kife even changed his display picture in Whatsapp to a gorgeous picture of him cross-dressing as a girl named “Baby”, whose status is “I hurt too.” #rofl.

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 5.16.47 pmSource

Alas, an unsuspecting Steven took the bait and asked Kife whether “she” wanted to be his girlfriend.

In their Whatsapp conversation, Steven Lim said:

Helloo u seem nice. Sorry i got no time for friends..u want be my girlfriend issit?*smiley face emoticon*

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 5.15.49 pmSource

Kife later said that he felt bad for pranking Steven Lim and that the experience “was quite an enlightenment.”

The blogger also added the hashtags #sorrystevenlim #youhavebeenpranked in his post about pranking Steven Lim.

Well Steven, better luck next time, and be careful with what you wish for.

Netizens Raise Pitchforks Over Junior Israeli Diplomat’s Misuse Of Singapore Flag As Tablecloth

Junior diplomat hosts a party using Singapore flag as a tablecloth

Photos of a man using the Singapore flag as a tablecloth have surfaced earlier this week. On Monday (28 Dec), All Singapore Stuff published a reader’s account of the incident.

The person who gave the tip-off said:

Yesterday there was a party going on below my friend’s block at the Levelz Condo at Farrer Rd and I was shocked to see that the Ang Mos there actually used our Singapore flag as a table cloth!

The whistle-blower also said that a police report has been filed for the misuse of the Singapore flag.

As patriotic Singaporeans, many would be flipping the tables upon seeing how foreigners are trampling on our dignity.

Israeli Embassy apologises

The Embassy of Israel’s spokesperson said in a press statement that it was “appalled to learn about the deplorable behaviour displayed by one of its junior staff members and expresses its sincere apologies”.

In a further statement, the Embassy said:

The Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed that requisite strong disciplinary procedure will be adopted against the individual after his meeting with the Singapore authorities, reflecting the severity with which Israel views this incident, especially in light of the close and friendly relationship between Singapore and Israel.

Singapore’s response

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that Singapore has accepted Israel’s apology, saying:

The misuse of the Singapore flag is a serious offence. We welcome the Israeli Embassy’s apology and assurances that it will undertake the necessary disciplinary actions against the individual concerned.

The MFA representative also reiterated that foreigners and diplomats are not above the law and should follow the laws and regulations of Singapore.

However, netizens are enraged

Some netizens complained that it was against the law and the diplomat should have been turned over to the Singapore Police.

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 11.14.28 AM

Source

Others were smart enough to pick up that the diplomat had Diplomatic Immunity, which means that diplomats enjoy “immunity from the criminal jurisdiction of the receiving State,” and are protected from the laws of the host country (which is Singapore in this case).

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 11.21.41 AM

Source

Some Singaporeans started questioning if the government would be so forgiving if it was a Singaporean who did the exact same thing.

Tan Kin Lian, who ran for the 2011 Presidential Election, expressed his doubts about the junior diplomat being the culprit and questioned if it could possibly be a Singaporean or work permit holder instead.

Other netizens commented that Israel should step into Singapore’s shoes and were interested to find out how they would react if the same thing happened to them.

Others were more objective and applauded Israel’s initiative to apologise.

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 11.26.30 AM

Foreign policy implications

Singapore and Israel have shared an intimate relationship since the birth of Singapore as a nation. The way Israel handled the situation shows how our close friend treats us as equals, and with respect. Israel did not trivialise the situation and took the initiative to apologise.

Although what the junior Israeli diplomat did was out of line, we should let bygones be bygones and continue to support and reinforce our friendly ties with Israel.

GIC’s Money-For-Volunteering Scheme Isn’t Entirely About Volunteering

Singapore’s sovereign fund just wants teens to give back to society

Somebody at GIC had a brilliant idea to get Singaporeans to give back to society — train undergrads to mentor underprivileged children while offering a cash grant incentive of $3,000 to $5,000.

gicsparksSource

The company behind Singapore’s sovereign fund even got their PR team to write a passionate copy about how GIC smartly invests the nation’s monies, so investing the people of Singapore is a logical step.

Unfortunately, The Straits Times chose to paraphrase the mentorship and counselling programme — named GIC Sparks & Smiles — to “volunteering”.

stvolunteerSource

A definition which, perhaps inevitably, led Singaporeans to ponder the true meaning of volunteerism in the comments section.

paidtovolunteer

And such related pitchforks are absolutely right — being paid for volunteering goes against the altruistic origins of the act, as clearly defined by a helpful Facebook user.

volunteerdefinition

Well, except the word volunteer appears nowhere in GIC’s page of CSR programmes.

Grant is only for students from households which earn below $2,000 per capita

Further, universities which support the grant are quick to emphasise that only students with a monthly household per capita of below $2,000 are eligible.

Just take a look at the pages of Nanyang Technological UniversitySingapore Management University, Singapore Institute of Technology, and Singapore University of Technology and Design.

This grant is doing great things — it accepts only students whose households earn way below Singapore’s median wage, equips them with counselling skills, and gets them to befriend and affect the lives of disadvantaged youth.

Instead, this well-meaning scheme has been badly misunderstood and wrongly chastised.

This isn’t an initiative to get students to earn a quick buck, but is a grant to reward those who take time out of their schedules to pick up otherwise difficult-to-learn skills and apply them for the greater good.

Just like how this Reddit user succinctly sums it up.

Malaysian Media Jumped Gun In Declaring Singapore-KL High Speed Rail Project Agreement

Malaysian paper says consensus met, MOT says otherwise

Singaporeans got excited to visit our Northern Neighbours once again, as The Edge Markets suggested on Monday (4 Jan) that Singaporean and Malaysian authorities have agreed on the “alignment” of the high speed rail (HSR) project linking Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in 90 minutes.

MustShareNews.com first reported on the project being delayed in March 2015, before being excited in May 2015 when the Singapore terminus was confirmed to be located in Jurong East.

Malaysian site MalaysiaKini even came up with this useful infographic, stoking expectations.

10580746_10153226469705906_4346573840388483953_oSource

Except we’re still some way away from even laying down the first track in this rail dream.

wiigangst

Not so fast!

On Tuesday (5 Jan), however, Singapore’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) emerged to clarify that both nations are “still in discussion” over the initiative.

Contrary to reports, MOT also clarified that “the alignment is also under discussion”, and will only be confirmed after the conclusion of detailed engineering studies.

Project was agreed in 2013, with agreement to build by 2020

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak met in 2013 to agree construction of the HSR, with seemingly the only condition to begin by 2020.

The project is expected to cost up to RM70 billion, and has attracted international interest. Japan is said to be interested to help speed things up, while South Korean and French firms are prepared to grease the wheels of this gravy train.

Regardless, it seems like we’ll be a lot greyer by the time any of us steps on the inaugural SG-KL HSR train.

10 Carrie Wong Facts That Prove She Is The Next Fann Wong

$
0

This up-and-coming starlet’s popularity is on the rise

First talent-spotted aged 19 on Channel U reality show Hey Gorgeous in 2013, Carrie Wong’s popularity is steadily on the rise. Despite being a rookie in the entertainment industry, she has already starred alongside bigwigs like Christopher Lee, Rui En, Jeanette Aw and more.

In 2015, she had notable roles in blockbusters Against The Tide and The Journey: Tumultuous Times – the latter even earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination in the 2015 Star Awards.

With a good head start in showbiz, she might very well be the next Fann Wong. Here are 10 facts about Carrie Wong that you need to know:

1. She grew up in a Mandarin-speaking family

Before Carrie entered primary school, she could not speak English. Raised in a Mandarin-speaking family, Carrie mostly read Chinese author Jin Yong’s novels in her childhood days.

She attributes her showbiz success to her fluency in Mandarin:

Many 1990s kids don’t like to speak Mandarin. I’ve been speaking Mandarin from young.

2. She was afraid of Christopher Lee when they first met

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 2.02.54 pmSource

In Channel 8 drama Against The Tide, Carrie played Lee’s little sister. Being the newcomer back then, she was already feeling awkward on set as she didn’t know anyone and felt like she didn’t belong.

To make matters worse, her first scenes were with ah ge Christopher Lee. Fun fact: she had a crush on Lee since his Condor Heroes days in the late 90s.

Carrie recounted:

I was quite afraid of him when I first saw him and I didn’t really know how to approach him.

I wanted to ask him, ‘Can we practise our script?’ I was trying to tap him on the shoulder but he was talking to somebody and obviously, he was ignoring me.

People were looking at me, like, ‘What are you trying to do? What do you want?’ I was holding my script and going, like, ‘Er, so what do I do now?’”

Fortunately, the onscreen siblings built rapport quickly and Carrie even started to joke around with Lee. When Carrie had a problem with crying scenes, Lee even mentored her and helped her get the scene right.

3. She doesn’t mind playing a 28-year-old character

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 2.07.47 pmSource

Carrie might only be 22 years old this year, but her mature appearance makes her look a tad older than her actual age.

For an actress, this might be to her advantage and she said she doesn’t mind playing a 28- or 30-year-old character. Nonetheless, she envisions some difficulties in the portrayal of such roles, such as the lack of maturity as she’s after all only a 22-year-old.

4. She has already bought her first car with her own paycheck

Carrie might not be among the ranks of Rui En or Jeanette Aw yet, but she’s definitely heading in the right direction. With her own paycheck, the budding actress has already bought her first car.

5. She has known actors Xu Bin and Shane Pow since her secondary school days

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 3.12.35 pmSource

In an interview with Toggle, Carrie revealed that she has known MediaCorp dukes Xu Bin and Shane Pow since secondary school. The three stayed at Woodlands and were all from neighbourhood schools. Through mutual friends, the three got acquainted but were not close until they all joined the entertainment industry.

Carrie and Xu Bin also grew closer after filming Channel 8 sitcom 118. The budding thespian even gave her first onscreen kiss to Xu Bin, and the two have also been shipped as #CarrBin.

She chimed:

Xu Bin is a very genuine person, and very straightforward too. He doesn’t go round in circles when talking. I admire guys who are like that. He doesn’t give off the vibe that makes people wary of him.

However, fans of #CarrBin would be disappointed as Carrie asserted that they’re merely good friends and a relationship is not possible between them.

6. She forsook love for her showbiz career

The sweet-faced starlet has only been in one relationship, which she sacrificed for her showbiz career.

Carrie met her ex-boyfriend in Poly as they were classmates, and they later dated for more than a year before MediaCorp offered her a contract. Problems arose when Carrie started filming Channel U drama Scrum!. Even worse, they were both preparing for their last paper in poly and Carrie had to spend the remaining of her free time filming, which led to frequent arguments.

Carrie revealed that her ex-boyfriend was very good to her, but was aversive to the idea of her being in the limelight. She eventually decided to end things as she believed the differences would only get worse in time.

It is a pity. But he is doing well now and I am doing fine. So, I believe I made the right choice. We don’t talk as much now, but we are still friends.

7. She falls down a lot

Enter Singapore’s very own Jennifer Lawrence.

According to Aloysius Pang, Carrie’s co-star in long-running Channel 8 sitcom Life Fear Not, Carrie falls a lot.

It has become such a classic thing that whenever someone else trips, I say, ‘You just did a Carrie!

Interestingly, Carrie’s “jie jie” Jeanette Aw – the two got chummy after filming The Journey: Tumultuous Times – had her red carpet Jennifer Lawrence moment at last year’s Star Awards. Carrie (in scarlet dress) promptly got up and went to the damsel’s “rescue”.

koryaSource

8. She wanted to be an air stewardess

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 3.22.53 pmSource

Touted as one of Caldecott’s most outstanding rookies, who would have thought that Carrie initially did not even want to be an actress?

Carrie entered showbiz after she graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a diploma in hospitality and tourism management. She planned to be an air stewardess after graduating and never considered getting a degree as she disliked studying.

She even candidly shared that she didn’t fare very well in her studies, always topping the class from the bottom. Nonetheless, she did manage to get promoted every year.

9. She is a pampered child

As an only child, the self-professed spoilt kid got whatever she asked for.

Moreover, her parents have never caned her over her poor results. She shared an anecdote about how she only scored 28/100 for her PSLE Maths prelims.

Instead of reprimanding her, her father told her to do better for prelim 2, but Carrie ended up doing worse and got 22/100. Her father reacted by saying he would treat her to Jack’s Place, and Carrie felt that he wanted to encourage her.

In reciprocation, Carrie diligently went for three months of tuition classes, which paid off as she managed to get an A* in the end.

Today, Carrie is still pampered by her father:

I can’t cook or use the washing machine, and I leave my dirty dishes on the table – my dad will pick up after me.

10. She quit clubbing at age 19

How to apply eyeliner on your waterline like Jeanette Aw Carrie Wong BODYSource

The early bloomer started underage clubbing at 16, thanks to her friends working in the club. Her social circle was also widened, and her Facebook friends list was filled with people whose faces she didn’t recognize.

Her partying life continued for a few years until she “grew tired” of it. She recounted an incident where she was so drunk she vomited in a cab and woke up with a blank memory and a horrible hangover the next day.

These days, she prefers being a couch potato during her free time.

TV sweetheart, the future ah jie?

The TV sweetheart has already won audiences’ hearts with her sweet looks and acting chops, and is definitely someone to look out for in 2016. Carrie has already received two nominations and bagged her first Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste Award at Star Awards last year, and we can’t wait to see what’s in stores for the up-and-coming starlet.

The Story Of This Malaysian Toddler Allegedly Sold To Singaporean Couple Is So, So Drama

Was the Malaysian toddler ‘adopted’, sold, or kidnapped?

On 9 Nov 2015, a Malaysian girl was taken by her father from her relatives’ Johor Bahru home. Due to the father’s history of drug abuse, 2-year-old Angie Tiong’s relatives believed that she was sold for RM12,000 (about S$4,000).

angie

Source

Angie’s relatives made a police report in early Dec, suggesting that Angie was sold to a couple living in Singapore.

Indeed this story of “adoption” — or selling — of a Malaysian toddler feels too complicated to wrap your head around.

Even The Straits Times was confused about the nationality of the couple whom had “adopted” little girl.

In a report dated 2 Jan, the couple was described as Singaporean, but was later said to be a Malaysian couple who are Singaporean Permanent Residents (PR).

LOL.

To ST’s credit, we eventually found out that the wife is Singaporean, and the husband is a Malaysian who is also a Singaporean PR.

MustShareNews.com thus presents to you a breakdown of this convoluted story.

What did Angie’s father say?

The story gets complicated as Angie’s father gave contradictory answers, and changed his story several times.

The father of Angie claimed that a male friend gave him “a few thousand ringgit” and took Angie for a walk from a budget hotel in Jalan Maju on 9 Nov.

A month later, he lodged a police report saying that his daughter had been “kidnapped” by that friend whom he made on the same day.

Basically, he gave his daughter away to a stranger he had met on the same day and cried kidnap one month later.

Wow.

Source

What did Angie’s relatives say?

They allege that Angie’s father had taken her from their Johor Bahru home and sold the little girl to a middleman.

They also said that Angie’s Vietnamese mother had left when the child was 5 months old, and her father was in a “perpetual drug-addled state”.

The relatives of the Malaysian toddler assert that the biological father had confessed to selling his daughter to a law firm with the help of a middleman, and lied to the police that Angie was kidnapped by his friends.

When the deal was done, the middleman took Angie’s legal documents and her passport.

Angie’s uncle Luo Jie Cheng, 49 and her aunt Tiong Mei Ling, 36, requested the adoptive couple to return Angie. However on 31 Dec, the couple failed to return Angie to the Johor Police Headquarters as promised, causing Angie’s aunt and uncle to wait for 5 hours in vain.

What did the adoptive couple say?

The adoptive couple held a press conference today (5 Jan) at the South Johore Chinese Press Club, located a short drive from the Causeway.

Mrs Cannie Wong, Angie’s adoptive mother, a Singaporean in her 40s, said that RM12,000 (S$4,000) was given as “ang pao” money — a token gesture. She explained that the middleman had told her the sum was to tide Angie’s birth father over some debt, hence she believed it was “legally okay”.

Sounds legit.

yoda

Source

Mr Wong, a Malaysian Permanent Resident of Singapore was ill and unable to attend the conference.

They were shocked when reports of Angie’s disappearance appeared on the newspaper. Mrs Wong, who revealed that they meant no harm, said:

I didn’t know her family was so complicated. My intentions were purely to adopt her and provide a good family for her.

The couple had asked Mr Yap Yeen Min (below, with Angie), a Malaysian businessman, to help them out with this case by returning Angie to her relatives.

yap

Source

Angie was returned to Johor on 2 Jan and currently being cared for by social workers. According to Malaysian news site Free Malaysia Today, Mr and Mrs Wong took good care of Angie.

Futhermore, in a video showing Mrs Wong speaking at the conference, uploaded by ST, the adoptive mother said that she had treated Angie well, and brought the little girl to attend drawing classes and singing lessons.

Was this really a case of adoption?

Usually, the adoption process takes 5 to 7 months to complete, according to the Ministry of Social and Family Affairs. However, the Wongs were able to get Angie in mid-Nov, which is less than a month from the toddler’s disappearance. Therefore the fact that Ms Wong was able to adopt Angie within such a short period makes the adoption process really dubious.

Furthermore, the father seemed to have the intention to profit from this adoption and had the guts to cry kidnap after giving her away.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian police have already taken the statements of the couple, as well as investigated and remanded Angie’s father, who has been released.

10 Aloysius Pang Facts That Prove He’s Caledecott’s Most Outstanding Duke

$
0
0

Caldecott’s youngest duke is also best newcomer

Having bagged the Best Newcomer award at Star Awards 2015, this duke is fast becoming a familiar face on local television.

In 2015, we put the spotlight on Aloysius as one of the 15 Singaporeans aged 25 and under to watch in 2015 and the he’s proved us right. Last year, he starred in dramas such as Tiger Mum, Super Senior, and Hand in Hand. He even earned a triple nomination for the Star Awards — Favourite Male Character, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Newcomer.

Here are 10 facts about Aloysius Pang that will make you swoon over the outstanding actor:

1. He was a child actor

aloysius-pang-then-and-nowSource

At the age of nine, Aloysius made his acting debut in children’s drama Xiao Fei Ren, and later starred in a series of other dramas like Bukit Ho Swee, A Child’s Hope and I Love My Home.

Fun fact: Aloysius filmed his first drama together with his doppelgänger, Shawn Lee. (More in point 5)

2. He stopped acting due to teasing

Aloysius studied in Yuying Secondary School. At the age of 14, he gave up acting due to teasing, and even called MediaCorp and “told them to take my (his) file out and never call me (him) again”.

He later graduated from Singapore Institute of Management in 2012. The same year, he made his comeback as the lead character in the film Timeless Love, directed by Lim Koong Hwee and Dasmond Koh.

m_timelesslove

3. He had a rebellious past

Being a child actor has its downside too.

In an interview with TODAY, he shared that there were people who snubbed him.

I had people coming up to me and saying, ‘Do you think people like you because you are good looking or a nice person? They like you because you are on TV.’ It just gets imprinted on your heart.

This led to a drastic change in Aloysius, for he wanted to be known as an individual rather than someone who is on TV.

I wanted to be popular for who I was instead, which is why I did a lot of the things I did back then. I wanted my personality to outshine that character, so I was constantly seeking attention in the wrong way. I was looking for trouble — because I wanted people to see me as me. At karaoke sessions, I would open the door and scream so the entire hallway would look. That’s how hard up I was for attention — just making a fool
of myself.

 4. He hopes to break out of his usual rebellious roles

201411050941-aloy1-jpg

Source

Drawing experience from his past, Aloysius have portrayed a lot of rebellious characters — in dramas like I’m In Charge and It Takes Two — and the most recent being a hao lian teenager named Chen Hao Lian in Channel 8 drama Tiger Mum. He thinks that he has already been typecasted, but believes he’ll get his big break someday.

He also hopes to try out different roles, such as a local ah beng or someone with a mental or physical disability, as he feels that an actor would be “able to educate the public on what these people are going through and how we could help them” if the role is portrayed well.

5. He is always being confused with his doppelgänger, Shawn

No, Aloysius did not act in I Not Stupid.

The 24-year-old actor is often mistaken for Shawn Lee, the child actor in Jack Neo’s movie.

ewrw

Source

The resemblance is uncanny, but the two aren’t brothers.

(Or so they say.)

6. He is a self-professed mama’s boy

In an interview with MeRadio, Aloysius said that his mother used to be “a tigress” when he was a child. Now that he’s older, he sees his mum as “a little rabbit” instead and wants to protect her.

[My mum] was a very strict disciplinarian and had very high expectations of my grades. She instilled a lot of discipline into [my brothers and me]which is why we are who we are now. But because she was strict, there was a distance between us and we cannot communicate well with her. After we grew up, I started to open up to my mum and her with me too. I began to feel that she is just a little rabbit. She has portrayed such a strong exterior for so many years and hiding this little rabbit inside. After I am more sensible, I knew that she has been through a lot. Now I just want to protect her. I see her as a vulnerable animal instead of a tigress. My goal now is to protect her after she has protected me for so long.

His bond with his mother is now stronger than before, which led to his self-professed “Mama’s boy” label.

I would lie down in between my mum and my dad on the bed and talk about everything every night after work. I would tell them if I have someone I like. They are my emotional pillars so I would tell them anything. We are in a very good place now.

7. He intends to settle down only after his prime age

Fan girls might have to be disappointed as the star only plans to settle down after his prime age.

Research has shown that men’s prime age is 33. After my prime, I can settle down and focus on my family. I have too much love for this art. I just want to put all my heart into it for now.

The budding actor will be focusing on his acting career for now, but revealed that he hopes to “marry someone who is stronger” in future because he is “too soft” and “cannot be strict” when it comes to disciplining children.

 8. He is a real gentleman

Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 4.40.49 pm

Source

Aloysius and actress Jayley Woo have played a couple twice — once in Tiger Mum and later in Channel 8 drama Super Senior — and grew closer in the process. In fact, the pair is so chummy they have gone out together a few times (yes, just the two of them). The two occasionally even share cabs as they live in close proximity.

However, both claim that they do not have romantic feelings for the other.

It’s a normal thing for me to accompany girls and I don’t think much of it.

Aloysius added that his mother has often advised him and his two brothers to be gentlemanly to girls.

In Tiger Mum, Woo played the role of Abigail, Aloysius’ classmate who became a prostitute. To do her research for the role’s portrayal, Woo wanted to study the prostitutes at Geylang, and Aloysius’ first instinct was to accompany and protect her as he used to cycle there and knew how dangerous it could be.

Awww…
Aww_zps3509580d

9. His ideal partner would be someone who is kind-hearted

The actor makes time out of his busy schedule to volunteer, and hopes that his other half would be equally kind-hearted.

I think it is going to be cliché again, but I like girls who are kind-hearted. I think that is very attractive especially when a girl helps out someone in front of me. Respect for elders and love for animals are very attractive to me. I could picture myself meeting my spouse at some volunteer events in the future.

However, his partner doesn’t have to be good-looking, for he thinks that looks fade and that “the interior is more attractive than the exterior”.

He also revealed his preference for older women, as his three previous relationships were all with younger girls.

I like a girl you can talk to about things like CPF and other adult topics. I can’t stand childish conversations.

10. He is ambitious

Aloysius likes to keep himself busy and takes guitar, piano, boxing, and sign-language lessons. He wants to write songs, set up his own business, write his own drama script and a movie, publish a book of poetry, and direct.

In 2014, Aloysius made his directorial debut and directed the music video of Singapore-based singer Gavin Teo’s I Understand, which starred Xu Bin and Kimberly Chia.

Last year, Aloysius also released his first single Black Tears (黑色眼泪).

Definitely an actor to watch out for

At age 24, this multi-talented duke has already tried his hand at singing and directing, while honing his craft as an actor. Aloysius might have constantly been mistaken for his doppelgänger Shawn Lee, but we think it’s only a matter of time before he establishes himself as a household name.

Fan girls can catch Aloysius starring in long-running sitcom Life Fret Not as Carrie Wong’s love interest, which is currently airing on Channel 8.

Guy Suggests Frustrating Drivers To Solve Transport Woes, Gets Flamed To Nobody’s Surprise

If driving was made as inconvenient as possible, would you still drive?

On 5 Jan, Wong Boon Hong wrote a letter to TODAY’s forum section in response to the article “Use flat rates, fare caps in push for a car-lite society”. In the piece, he responded to the proposal of using fare caps and flat rates to charge commuters, saying such a policy would make public transport unattractive.

Having a flat rate would lead to an unfair system as the “short distance commuters would be paying more to subsidise the long distance commuters”.

Instead, he puts forward a provocative solution.

Making it inconvenient to drive

Mr Wong suggests we make driving an inconvenience and frustrating experience, thus deterring people from driving and move towards a car-lite society.

To achieve a car-lite society, driving must be made inconvenient or even a frustrating experience. This would be more effective than making cars unaffordable or public transport more affordable.

He gave examples of how to make driving inconvenient, such as decreasing the parking lots, having more Electronic Road Pricing gantries, and reducing the number of lanes.

Citing Japan’s transport system, he justifies that inconvenience in driving a car results in commuters taking public transport as an alternative.

Netizens respond with flames and no mercy

Of course, netizens weren’t pleased with that idea.

The responses include personal attacks calling Mr Wong out.

Others have started to insult his intelligence, taking his solution and rather confusingly used healthcare as an analogy.

Meanwhile, this guy keeps it short and sweet.

Luckily, there were some people offering constructive comments without ripping Wong’s solution into shreds.

Tan Kin Lian Thinks Donald Trump As US President Would Be Good For Singapore

Tan Kin Lian <3 Donald Trump

Remember Tan Kin Lian?

Yeah, he’s that guy who garnered 4.91% of votes cast in the 2011 Presidential Elections.

presidentresultsSource

Well, the poor guy might have lost his $48,000 deposit, but he still actively runs a blog about basically whatever concerns a 67-year-old Chinese man who lives in Singapore.

You know, money and stuff probably.

Anyways, Mr Tan seems to still have a passing interest in politics, and he knows who he’s rooting for in the 2016 United States presidential race.

He’s putting his money on the man who, despite having zero political experience, seems to be the leading candidate for the Republican Party.

Mr Donald Trump.

View post on imgur.com

Wait, but why?

According to Mr Tan, President Trump’s mantra of ‘mak[ing]America great again’ will bring about unexpected benefits to Singapore.

Trump’s promises of stopping illegal immigrants and bringing jobs back to the US hark a return to protectionism — where trade with other countries is restricted. Doing so forces American companies to hire Americans.

But that’s not even his most conservative idea. Just look at Trump’s first campaign ad.

Sounds bad, but actually might be good..?

When a large country cuts trade, smaller countries like Singapore will be adversely affected. But Mr Tan reckons we could adjust to a smaller economy.

We do not really need to bring in many foreigners to serve the global economy or the global financial sector. With a smaller economy due to diminished global trade, we will have less jobs for foreigners. The remaining jobs can be done by Singaporeans.

With Singaporeans doing these jobs, we’ll probably have to pay higher wages to achieve the same result. Surely that can’t be good?

Mr Tan has a solution for that too!

Will higher cost of labor lead to higher cost of living in Singapore? Yes. But that meant less spending on houses (and house prices will be cheaper) and on cars. And that will also be a good thing.

Also, there will also be a very welcome side effect to the whole situation.

The Singapore government will have a smaller budget surplus. They cannot afford to pay outrageous salaries to their ministers. And that would be another good thing.

Er. Sure.

Might he actually be right?

Mr Tan seems convinced that President Trump is a forgone conclusion, but we’re not entirely sure if Singapore can gain from such a result.

Does the former presidential hopeful actually have a point? What do you think?

10 Hayley and Jayley Woo Facts That Prove They’re Singapore’s Olsen Twins

$
0
0

Step aside, Olsen twins — the Woos are in town

Enter Singapore’s very own Olsen twins – Hayley and Jayley Woo.

They may look almost identical, but have vastly different personalities. While Hayley is more feminine and demure, Jayley has an edgier, devil-may-care attitude.

Jayley broke into the entertainment scene before Hayley, and her popularity soared. Nonetheless, Hayley soon caught up and starred in movie Filial Party, Channel 8 sitcom 118, Channel 5 thriller Zero Calling, and even made her idol drama debut in Malaysia.

Such is the power of 2, as the siblings have proven through their success.

Here are 10 facts about the siblings that you need to know:

1. They already had a significant online following before joining showbiz

Prior to entering showbiz, the twins were already popular bloggers.

They started blogging in 2005 and had similar domain names, Hayley’s at hayleywoojiayi and Jayley’s at jayleywoojiaqi.

They also did covers on YouTube, dubbing themselves as Jay on the Hay, modelled after YouTube sensation Rin on the Rox.

As Jay on the Hay/ Rin on the Rox put it, whether you like it, love it, hate it, whatever — just enjoy it.

2. They started blogging due to their small social circle

It’s hard to believe that the bubbly twins starting blogging because they didn’t have many friends, and needed an outlet to express their feelings.

In secondary school, Jayley was the class vice-chairman and also the teacher’s pet. She had to report her classmates who played truant, and naturally didn’t have many friends. That was when Jayley decided that if no one wanted to talk to her, she would talk to herself on her blog.

Hayley was indirectly affected since she was in the same class as Jayley, and adopted the same method as Jayley.

3. They were from ITE

CIMG0015

Hayley in her ITE days.

Source

The sisters were from Tanglin Secondary and later went to ITE Clementi.

For some, ITE might mean It’s The End, but this was not the case for Jayley.

At a sharing session at ITE College East, Jayley said:

I cried and was very, very sad when I got my O-level results. I saw my classmates going to polytechnics and junior colleges, and I had to go to ITE even though I was from the Express stream. Back then, I really felt that ITE was the end.

But after studying Business Administration at the institute, Jayley felt that ITE has helped change her life around, and perceived it as “a beginning” instead. She felt that her course was useful and allowed her to apply what she learnt to real life situations. Jayley also made new friends and became more sociable.

The twins then pursued a Mass Communications diploma at MDIS.

Now, they’re up-and-coming celebrities – who says your choice of school determines your life?

4. They joined The New Paper New Face competition

Hayley and Jayley participated in The New Paper New Face competition in 2011.

During the judging process, the judges also saw the differences between the twins.

The judges then asked the both of us, ‘Are you willing to chop your hair off?’ My answer was, ‘Sure, why not’. But Hayley said, ‘But how short will the hair be?’ I think the judges from then on saw a difference in us.

It was originally Hayley’s idea to participate in the competition, but she didn’t want to do it alone and asked her twin to accompany her. However, Hayley did not make it past round 2. The next year, Hayley went for The New Paper New Face’s closed-doors audition again, but unfortunately did not make it to the top 25.

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 2.47.44 pm
Source

On the other hand, Jayley made it to the top 20, and gained more prominence after the competition as she was invited to lend her face for television commercials, print advertisements and runway shows. Jayley even made her television debut in Channel U TV series Jump!.

5. They won’t wear bikinis

The sisters sport different styles — Hayley’s one is more feminine while Jayley’s style is edgier.

But there’s one thing both sisters agree on — comfort is key.

Fanboys who are hoping to catch a glimpse of the sisters in bikinis might have to be disappointed for the duo would not wear one.

Hayley added:

I have to develop my abs before I can show it!

Maybe Channel 8 producers should consider casting the twins in a sequel of Beach.Ball.Babes so audiences can have a visual feast ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

6. Their ideal roles

Jayley wants to star in idol dramas and play a girl who is surrounded by handsome guys, much like the female leads in Meteor Garden and Hana Kimi. This might be partly why Jayley is jealous of her twin, who had the chance to act in a Malaysian idol drama, Dive Into Love.

Dive_Into_LoveSource

For Hayley, she would like to portray a princess, like South Korean actress Kim Tae Hee’s role in romantic comedy My Princess.

7. Their childhood ambitions

For the Woo sisters, their first ever ambition was not to be an actress.

While Hayley’s childhood ambition was to be a singer, Jayley wanted to be a professional figure skater.

Watch as the duo shared more about themselves:

8. They bth wanted to be air stewardesses

Seems like being an air stewardess is every girl’s dream – up-and-coming starlet Carrie Wong once had that dream, and so did the twins.

In 2011, Jayley applied to Singapore Airlines, but only managed to make it to round 2.

In 2012, Hayley auditioned for several K-pop competitions such as the JYP & Alpha K-pop in order to fulfill her dreams of being a K-pop star.

In an interview with AsiaOne, Hayley said:

If I still haven’t succeeded by the end of the year, I may consider becoming an air stewardess.

9. Their relationships

In 2012, Jayley’s romance — and subsequent break up three months later — with MediaCorp actor Edwin Goh was highly publicised in the media.

In an interview with AsiaOne in 2013, Jayley said:

I won’t be as open about these things as before. I had just got into entertainment at the time and I didn’t realise that people would be so interested in this type of thing. I mean, I’m just a normal human being.

Jayley is now single for more than a year since her last relationship with someone outside the industry, which lasted for three years.

Hayley, on the other hand, is open about her relationship with ex-MediaCorp actor Kang Chengxi.

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 1.33.01 pmSource

I don’t feel like I should lie about our relationship, since we’ve been dating for so long. Who knows? Maybe he’s the one. Either way, I know I’ll be careful about the way I talk or behave as well, because I know there are many people out there who look to me and Jayley as role models.

Fun fact: Hayley’s boyfriend also has a twin!

10. They’re avid K-Pop fans

The two K-pop fan girls had taken part in numerous big scale K-pop related competitions, including singing competitions organised by South Korean entertainment company JYP entertainment.

no20Source

In 2011, Jayley joined tvN K-Pop Star Hunt, and was part of the top 20. Her sister joined the second season of the same competition, and made it to the top 16. Through these competitions, the sisters realised they they had a passion for the performing arts, including dancing, singing, and acting.

Jayley also adores Korean boy band SHINee and even attended SHINee’s World Concert in Singapore in 2011.

Her sister, however, prefers Girls’ Generation and if switcheroos were possible, Hayley would like to be Yoona.

What sibling rivalry?

With both sisters in showbiz, one would have thought that sibling rivalry is inevitable. The twins however seem to have gained immunity, and #JayOnTheHay’s relationship is still as close as ever, with both frequently appearing on the other’s Instagram feed.

Would they be the next By2 and even expand out of Singapore into bigger markets in time to come? We’re excited to see how fresh blood would help propel the local entertainment scene.

sian

Ah yes. Never has a picture ever so thoroughly encapsulated the pain (of the recruit) and joy (of his parents) that comes with enlistment day.

The picture was uploaded on Basic Military Training Centre’s official Facebook page on Tuesday (5 Jan), but was quietly deleted just when it started going viral.

But that’s okay. The internet never forgets.

And to perfectly encapsulate the internet’s everlasting memory, we’ve taken his face, and placed it in 10 other situations where Singaporeans can perfectly relate and react similarly to.

Here’s 10 more situations where a #SibeiSianRecruit face are completely appropriate.

1. When you go to 7-11…

Netflix finally launches in Singapore

On 6 Jan, American internet streaming media Netflix expanded its TV network to 130 new countries, including Singapore. Singaporeans everywhere went into a frenzy knowing that they would be able to watch their favourite TV series online.

Looks like we finally won’t have that darn page telling us “sorry Netflix is not available in your country” anymore.

The monthly pricing for Netflix packages in Singapore is as follows:

Basic:  S$10.98, which allows streaming on a single device at standard definition.
Standard: S$13.98, for High Definition (HD) streaming on two devices.
Premium:S$16.98, Ultra HD 4k  content for 4 devices.

According to reddit users, there are quite a few great movies we can now watch on Netflix.

This guy updates us on the several movies we can catch now on the site. However, he described the TV section as “underwhelming”, suggesting that it still lacks the content users would expect to watch on Netflix.

Currently, the TV series that are available include Arrow, Daredevil, Suits, and Jessica Jones.

What are we missing out on?

With the sparse furnishing of TV series in the Singapore’s Netflix, we’ve decided to take a look at shows that Singaporean Netflix-ers will unfortunately miss out on.

This list is not ranked based on popularity.

1. House of Cards

House of Cards is an American political drama series originally produced by Netflix, and is on its third season starring Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood.

Why isn’t it shown in Singapore’s Netflix?

According to a Netflix spokesperson, House of Cards is unavailable due to “global licensing issues”.

2. The Walking Dead

Our favourite zombie series is unfortunately not on Netflix.

With The Walking Dead already streaming on cable TV channels like HBO, we’re guessing the cable operators wouldn’t be too comfortable with the series being available on Netflix.

3. Breaking Bad

Basically, this series teaches us that becoming a chemistry teacher isn’t so bad, because we can just drop everything and start cook meth to get the bucks rolling.

Hmm. Maybe we really shouldn’t be airing this to impressionable young kids.

4. The Big Bang Theory

This American comedy series about a group of nerds and their super hot friend first aired in 1999.

Maybe Netflix is opting to roll out the slightly newer series before expanding their catalogue to the older stuff.

5.  The Flash

Channel 5 aired The Flash, so that might have something to do with the superhero drama being unavailable. But then again, Flash’s buddy, Arrow is also on Mediacorp.

6. Futurama

This animated series doesn’t seem to have a particularly big following in Singapore. But you probably know it as the cartoon that gave birth to this meme:

7. Modern Family

This series is a documentary style parody of literally three modern families who live in suburban Los Angeles. This series explores how the three families experience ups and downs with a touch of hilarity.

However, one of Modern Family’s couples is gay. So…it should be quite a while before the mockumentary turns up on Netflix Singapore.

8.  Sense8

This series produced by the Wachowskis is not shy to feature homosexual scenes.

However, as most of us know, homosexuality is big no-no in Singapore, hence there’s no surprise this sci-fi drama is not available on Netflix Singapore.

9. Friends

The most classic American Sitcom featuring Jennifer Aniston — whom at 51 years old looks as stunning as ever.

As mentioned earlier, perhaps only recent releases — those after 2010 —  are being shown at the moment.

In contrast, Friends is a slightly older series as it aired from 1994 to 2004.

10. Orange Is The New Black

Okay this entry is debatable. But the title is awesome

While Orange Is The New Black (OITNB) is can be streamed on Netflix Singapore, it is censored. Thus, viewers are not able to watch the full version of this series.

The reason for censorship? Homosexuality.

Netflix is probably still here to stay

Move over Toggle, cause Netflix is finally here.

However, the lack of TV series at the inception of Netflix in Singapore, and these 10 shows which are the rage for people might become deal breakers for those who had intend to pay a monthly sum to watch Netflix.

By the way, the Netflix and chill joke is overused.

10 Tosh Zhang Facts That Perfectly Explain Why He Has 255k Instagram Followers

Tosh, the video editor turned YouTuber turned actor turned household name

255,960.

That’s how many followers Tosh Zhang a.k.a Tosh Rock has on Instagramdethroning hot favourite Elvin Ng at 203k and duke Ian Fang at 178k.

His role as Sergeant Alex Ong in Jack Neo’s Ah Boys to Men (ABTM) might be his first acting role, but the no-nonsense platoon sergeant was well loved and Tosh’s popularity soared from then on.

Here are 10 facts about the charismatic artiste you need to know:

1. He was a YouTube sensation

In 2010, Tosh burst into the YouTube scene with a short food vlog that garnered thousands of views, something he wasn’t used to back then. This spurred him on and he started doing more vlogs and building a strong social media presence, which got him a loyal following online.

2. He is an “accidental actor”

A8I3PBOCYAAIKUrSource

Before ABTM, Tosh had no experience in acting and mostly did production work. He was also supposed to study film at Melbourne’s Deakin University, but things took a turn when Jack Neo stumbled on his YouTube videos.

In an interview with PIONEER, Tosh recounted:

I was going to fly off to Australia for my studies, but one week before my flight, I received a video from Jteam (the production house behind the ABTM films). They were asking for people to audition and they mentioned my name because Jack [Neo, the films’ director] happened to see my YouTube videos. When I told my mom I was going to go try, she laughed at me straightaway because I do mostly production work. I’m an editor, I’m a videographer, so she said ‘you cannot act’. I went ahead anyway and I got it.

3. He wrote and composed a song for Ah Boys to Men

You know that catchy Ah Boys to Men song “Recruit’s anthem” that you just can’t stop humming?

Yup, that one. The ABTM theme song was written and composed by Tosh.

He shared with The New Paper:

I spent two to three weeks writing the song and (Jack Neo) rejected it twice.

I wanted to make the song relatable to army recruits and my goal is to have them sing it (when they are in the army).

4. He has a fear of heights

BcjUqW3CUAAMLVFSource

For his lead role in Jack Neo’s movie The Lion Men, he had to play a confident two-time lion dance champion nicknamed Lion God or Supreme. Together with the rest of the cast, Tosh had to undergo three months of intensive martial arts and lion dance training, a feat for him since he has a fear of heights.

5. His education

The Ah Boys To Men star was schooled at Northland Primary, and went on to Northbrooks Secondary. He undertook his tertiary studies at Republic Polytechnic and studied New Media.

6. He is not afraid to air his views

When that innocent 17-year-old kid named Amos Yee was subjected to condemnation by the rest of the world, at least one person did not denounce him and even spoke up for him – Tosh. Instead of seeing him as an attention-seeking kid, Tosh saw his actions as a call for help and felt sorry for Amos Yee.

He took to Instagram to share his two cents about the Amos Yee saga:

My 2cents.

A photo posted by Tosh Zhang 张智扬 😎 (@toshrock) on

7. He is a self-professed huge eater

During an interview with The New Paper conducted at Marina Bay Sands Hotel’s Rise restaurant, the 24-year-old indulged in three rounds of buffet spread of fresh seafood, salad, Asian and Western cuisine and dessert – a testament of his voracious appetite.

He also loves his carbs in the form of ramen:

I am a super big fan of ramen. The last time I was in Japan, I had ramen every single day

And when it comes to local food, Tosh is a fan of the laksa from Queensway Shopping Centre, Bak Kut Teh from Balestier’s Founder Bak Kut Teh, and dim sum from Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant.

8. His older friends call him by his Chinese name

To fans, he might be more popularly known by his stage name Tosh rock, while most of his friends call him Tosh. However, his older friends call him by his Chinese name, Zhi Yang (张智扬).

Watch from 0:57 when Tosh introduces himself. Just one thing though, Tosh — we hate to break it to you but you’ve been pronouncing your Chinese name wrongly your whole life. 智扬 is actually pronounced as zhi4 yang and not zi3 yang.

9. He has a dog that is cuter than him

Who would have thought that the cool rapper has a cute shihtzu? Staying true to his roots, the lion city kia even named his dog Orbi, which means ‘serves you right’ in Singlish. Orbi takes on Tosh’s surname, and is a mini Instagram celebrity @orbizhang.

Haven’t seen my lil’ princess in awhile 😍@OrbiZhang A video posted by Tosh Zhang 张智扬 😎 (@toshrock) on

10. His ideal girl

Like Caldecott’s duke Aloysius Pang, Tosh pays more attention to what lies on the inside when it comes to his ideal girl. He said that he does not care how she looks like, so long as she is “cheerful, has a great sense of humour and accepts his life in the public eye”.

Aww…

The 12 Most Important Tony Tan Handshakes Of All Time

$

President Tony Tan shakes hands with others wherever he goes

Handshakes are the most important part of meeting new people.

Dr Tony Tan — who also happens to be the president of Singapore — is well known for his world class handshakes. They never fail to make the headlines.

Apart from that, he boasts an extremely close semblance to Kentucky Fried Chicken’s (KFC) Colonel Sanders.

Thus, as a tribute to the art of handshakes Dr Tan has perfected over the years as Singapore’s president, we present to you the 10 greatest handshakes by the man who won the 2011 presidential elections.

1. This golden handshake with China’s President takes the cake

In the photo, Dr Tan seems to be enjoying a very intense moment with Xi Jin Ping, the leader of China.

This reminds us of the Hydra meeting from Marvel’s Avengers. We won’t be surprised if they whispered *Hail Hydra*.

2. The dead fish handshake with a fishmonger

Something’s fishy about this handshake. We can’t shake the feeling of insincerity off this one.

 3. The overly-puffy handshake at NTU’s convocation ceremony

Just look at that get-up. Dr Tan looks like he’s trying to hide some of those extra inches he gained over the holiday feasting.

What’s with the bulge at the back?

At least the handshake’s good tho.

4. The flawless handshake with Tony Abbot

To be honest, he has perfected his scale of handshaking. This one with the former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot, is impeccable.

We can imagine them going:

Abbot: Yo Tony what’s up mate?

Dr Tan: Nothing’s up Tony, just giving earning loads of money by giving my signature handshake.

5. The mature handshake with Narendra Modi

Dr Tan’s silvery coloured hair complements Modi’s white beard and hair. Thus, this is the mature handshake.

6. The electric handshake

Can you feel the electricity in their gaze?

Just kidding, Dr Tan is just conferring the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) award on General Worapong Sanganetra, Chief of Defence Forces, Royal Thai Armed Forces.

*Hail Hydra*

7. The fabulous handshake with his idol

It is funny how Dr Tan was stuck in a crowd but managed to move towards Mando pop star JJ Lin, during the SG50 National Day celebrations.

Perhaps, JJ Lin has a secret fan?

8. The one-sided handshake

Thus far, we’ve seen the President’s handshakes spread their joy and aura to others.

However, even Superman has an off day sometimes. So too Dr Tan.

Thus, these handshakes are called the “one-sided” handshake.

We can observe Dr Tan’s face plastered with a smile, while Chinese Vice-Premier Zhang Gao Li sports a blank expression.

9. The table-in-between handshake

This handshake is cringingly awkward. Dr Tan however, still manages to deliver his handshake despite the table so rudely getting in the way.

It also looks like they are fighting over the scroll in their hands.

10. The copycat handshake

Same colour of tie? Check.

Matching suits? Check.

They are probably thinking — Eh why you copy me sia? Why did this guy copy me? His glasses and hairstyle are also the same.

11. The level 1000 kungfu master handshake

Dr Tan’s mastery of the art of handshaking shows no boundaries. He has mastered the intricacies and nuances of a good handshake and outperformed himself once again.

And once again, he doesn’t disappoint in his kungfu master-worthy batik shirt.

By the way, that guy in the turquoise shirt is Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, who pales in comparison to the great handshaking master.

Just check out him practicing those moves.

Look out, Ip Man.

10. The baby handshake

Seriously? Do you really need to shake hands with babies too now?

World Famous Handshake

Dr Tan’s signature handshakes have gained a great deal of reputation.

Perhaps one day, the art of shaking another’s hand would become a renowned skill and Dr Tan’s handshake would gain global recognition. After all, the current president has shook the hands of many world leaders.

Keep on shaking, Dr Tony Tan.

PM Lee Glad That Singaporeans Are In High Demand Overseas; Thinks Brain Drain Is Advantageous For SG

$

It is “not a bad thing” for Singaporeans to be high in demand overseas, according to PM Lee

Yes, it might be hard to believe but our Prime Minister is actually okay with Singaporeans migrating overseas.

Yesterday (10 Jan), after chairing the annual meeting of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council (RIEC), PM Lee Hsien Loong responded to questions about the “brain drain” situation in Singapore.

“Brain drain” is a problem when local talent migrate overseas, resulting in a shrinking local talent pool to draw from.

According to PM Lee, “Singapore is part of a global community and we have to accept that”. This means that due to globalisation, Singapore is integrated into the international community. Thus, there is no reason to reject the migration of Singaporeans to explore greater opportunities overseas.

PM Lee’s understanding and pragmatism towards Singaporeans leaving

Instead of actively trying to prevent Singaporeans from migrating, PM Lee presents a pragmatic yet considerate view towards the problem of brain drain.

In short, he has been extremely generous towards Singaporeans leaving the country to pursue greener pastures.

PM Lee

Source/Source

The Prime Minster seems to be elated that there is a market for Singaporean labour overseas, taking an optimistic approach to the issue.

Believing that when Singaporeans migrate overseas for work, they would gain exposure, knowledge and ideas which would benefit Singapore when they return, PM Lee said:

It’s not a bad thing at all for Singaporeans to be in demand all over the world, and to be distributed in many cities and research centres. [They can] gain experience, learn what the world is like, pick up ideas and perhaps one day to come back [to Singapore].

PM Lee’s considerate approach towards the brain drain problem in Singapore totally proves that he is a good guy Greg.

 lee

Source

However, PM still hopes to maintain a core of Singaporeans

While PM Lee admits that the attempt to prevent local talent from going overseas for better opportunities is futile, he hopes to retain a tightly knitted and deeply rooted group of Singaporeans.

As discussed in the RIEC,  there are plans to retain and attract talent to Singapore.

In this aspect, PM Lee will be taking a leaf from the US, which has a 60% population of foreign research students in its leading universities.

He is convinced that providing opportunities at home is the way to attracting and retaining talent in Singapore.

Plans for the future

Plans for the future include striving towards RIE2020. RIE stands for Research, Innovation and Enterprise.

In order to carry out the plans, a pool of local and foreign talent is required to carry out Research and Development (R&D) in Singapore. Thus, attracting the younger generation to take up interest on learning about science and technology is crucial in producing local talent.

A mix is important

PM Lee believes that there must be an optimum mix between foreigners and Singaporeans in order to achieve the best outcome for RIE2020.
