How we celebrated SAF Day: stalking soldiers on social media.

You Post, We Stalk — a slogan we at MustShareNews could use to describe the way we mark every. special. occasion. ever.

On this week’s edition of You Post, We Stalk, we waited all day yesterday (1 July) for NSFs and NSMen to get all sweet and sentimental.

Because, add a dash of SAF day to a bowl of sweet and sentimental soldiers and you get: a sea of fun and (mostly) green photos that make you wish you never abandoned your NDP tickets on Carousell for $400.

But in all seriousness, thank you to all the men and women who have kept Singapore safe and peaceful these 50 years.

Here’s the final result of our hipster way of celebrating the special occasion:

13 social media posts to inspire you to sign on or buy $400 NDP tickets (jk.)

1. HADOUKEN!

9. The Family Goals

11. The Squad Goals, Airforce edition

The nation thanks you, now be an aunty and use up all those promos

Thank you to all the men and wo – oh, we’ve already said that.

Faster go USS la, you only get once chance every year to go all aunty mode on the SAF day promotions. Shoo!

MustShareNews wishes you a Happy Belated (because stalking) SAF Day! Peace.

Ngerng Cross-Examining Lee At The Supreme Court Was More Exciting Than Mayweather Vs Pacquiao

PM Lee Cross Examined By Roy Ngerng For 3 Gruelling Hours

Source

The clash between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Roy Ngerng came to a head yesterday (1 July) at the Supreme Court.

PM Lee gamely accepted the challenge to be cross-examined by Ngerng. Ngerng has no form of legal training and was guided by Justice Lee Seiu Kin, the judge for the case.

The entire cross examination resembled a boxing match between the two traded blows across the court room.

MustShareNews brings you the key highlights of the “boxing match” of Lee Vs Ngerng at the Supreme Court.

Arrival Of The Boxers

PM Lee was chauffeured into the courtroom, and he sportingly waved at his supporters.

Source

Roy Ngerng entered the courtroom, looking pretty confident.

Source

So what’s at stake?

The ruling yesterday was to access the amount of damages that Ngerng will have to pay PM Lee for defamation.

Ngerng will be looking to argue his case to pay the least amount possible.

On the other hand, PM Lee will be trying to claim the highest amount of money possible from Ngerng, perhaps, hopefully to make Ngerng stare at plain rice and crowdfund again.

Source

Opening Statements

Lee

Davinder Singh, PM Lee’s lawyer, delivered the opening statement on PM Lee’s behalf. He noted that previous defamation cases which involves government Ministers ranged from SGD$100,000 to SGD$400,000.

He argued that a higher amount should be awarded in this case, on the basis of the continuous publication of Ngerng’s allegations, Ngerng deplorable conduct, and Ngerng’s constant and renewed assault against PM Lee’s image.

From the very first, the defendant (Roy Ngerng) set out to wound.

He (Ngerng) knowingly and maliciously published a false and vicious libel against the plaintiff to inflict maximum injury. He (Ngerng) then cynically capitalised on, and continues to exploit, that libel and the ensuing lawsuit to promote himself as a champion of free speech.

- Davinder Singh

Ngerng

After his request for a Queen’s Counsel lawyer was turned down by Justice Steven Chong at the High Court last month (11 June), Ngerng decided to represent himself in the case.

Ngerng’s opening statement asserted that freedom of expression in Singapore will be negatively affected if the damages incurred is too steep.

awarding a disproportionately high amount of damages… would cast a chilling effect on freedom of expression in Singapore.

- Roy Ngerng Yi Ling

Match START!!!

We pick out the key highlights of the match between PM Lee and Ngerng yesterday.

Round 1

Ngerng questioned PM Lee’s claim that, just because his article was of interest to the general public, does not mean that people will want to read it.

PM (Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong): I’m sure you didn’t write this hoping Singaporeans would not read it.

PM Lee lures out Ngerng’s intention in writing the article.

NGERNG 0 – 1 LEE

Round 2

Roy Ngerng (RN): Do you know when I started writing my blog?

PM: No.

RN: 2012. Do you know how many articles I’ve written?

PM: No.

RN: More than 400 articles.

PM: Well done.

PM Lee totally shoots down that irrelevant question from Ngerng.

NGERNG 0 – 2 LEE

Round 3

RN: Can you point out which section of the post, which are taken from CNA (Channel NewsAsia) as factual statements, show malicious intent

PM: I think that’s meaningless. It is the totality that is condemnatory. The whole of the article should be taken.

PM Lee points out a flaw in Ngerng’s argument by asserting that entire article should be taken as evidence that Ngerng had written with malicious intent, rather than sections of the article.

NGERNG 0 – 3 LEE

Round 4

RN: How do you know the proportion of people who read the later article would look for offending image and article?

PM: There’s this thing called Google.

PM Lee owns Ngerng in this round, by pointing out how poorly the question was constructed.

NGERNG 0 – 4 LEE

Round 5

RN: How is my article defamatory when it is all factual statements? Did I mention your name in my articles?

PM: No they did not mention your name.

PM: All the institutions you mentioned are all in the Government, which you have taken pains to prove that I am responsible for.

PM Lee catches Ngerng’s trick of trying to use the absence of name to proof that there were no malicious intent in the articles.

 NGERNG 0 – 5 LEE

Round 6

Ngerng queried PM Lee if he had made any comparison between what is happening in City Harvest Church and the person “Lee Hsien Loong” in his blog post that started the defamation.

PM: You did not have to (name me specifically).

RN: Mr Lee, I did not want to.

Ngerng proves that he did not have malicious intent to defame PM Lee.

NGERNG 1 – 5 LEE

Round 7

RN: You’ve already said that you admitted that you used the law against me.

PM: I have sued you for defamation and you’re very unhappy about it. You don’t accept that you have defamed me. You think I’m prosecuting and persecuting you.

RN: Mr Lee, first, do not put words into my mouth. I said I accepted the judgment, I did not say I do not accept the judgment.

PM: Because having acknowledged that you defamed me and having taken back all the words, you are now saying that you are innocent, that I am prosecuting you, I am silencing you and it is wrong for me to do that, when in fact I’m just vindicating my reputation.

RN: You sued me, right? Are you using the law to persecute me?

PM: No.

PM Lee sounds unsettled by Ngerng continuous attack on his position, only managing to muster a weak “No”.

NGERNG 2 – 5 LEE

Round 8

RN:You did not reach out to me before you sued me?

PM: No, you defamed me. I have to defend myself.

RN: Yes, yes. The question is you didn’t reach out to me.

PM: Yes, I wrote you a letter asking you to take it down and apologise.

RN: Now, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) wrote to me on Twitter, I used a photo of theirs and they asked for a photo credit. If you had reached out to me, we could have resolved things.

PM: You have chosen a different path for your own reasons, I accept that. Well, you have to take the consequences.

RN: Mr Lee, CNA did not send me a demand letter … They request, and I did it voluntarily. Would you have chosen to not send me a demand letter?

PM: You have been skirting closer and closer to defaming me for a long period of time. I have been watching this, I have not responded. Eventually, it was unambiguous and flagrant and I decided I had no choice but to act.

RN: Mr Lee, you just made an accusation about me.

PM: Because you have been making more and more outrageous allegations about the CPF, stopping short of accusing me of doing bad things personally, but coming closer and closer to saying that. And at some point last year, when you published this post on 15 May 2014, I consulted my lawyers and it was completely unambiguous and I could not not act.

PM Lee definitely scored this round, asserting that he had been watching Ngerng for a long time, only acting when Ngerng finally crossed the line. Ngerng had no good reply — it is probably true that Ngerng had been attacking PM Lee indirectly before the controversial blog post.

NGERNG 2 – 6 LEE

Round 9

RN: With great power comes great responsibility, if the Prime Minister himself has been reckless, why should I take the full responsibility for his reputation?

Ngerng clearly wins this round, by exposing PM Lee’s recklessness which was also to be blamed for the escalation of the entire event.

NGERNG 3 – 6 LEE

Final Round

RN: Mr Lee, you said,” If we didn’t get it right, I’m sorry. But we will try better next time.” You said that this at the 2011 general election.

Mr Lee, will you give me a next time?”

PM: Saying sorry would have been enough, but that was not what you did.

PM Lee subdued Ngerng in this round again after asserting that Ngerng did not stop sullying PM Lee’s name even after apologising.

NGENRG 3-7 LEE

End of Match

The verbal battle between Ngerng and PM Lee is definitely more exciting than the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Source

The case continues today, when Roy Ngerng will be cross examined by PM Lee’s lawyer, Davinder Singh.

The entire case is expected to be wrapped by the third day (3 July) when the total damages to be paid by Ngerng to PM Lee will be announced in the high court by Justice Lee.

The Man Who Created The Kallang Roar Passes Away

A Great Loss to Singapore Football

Mr Nadesan Ganesan — famous for creating the Kallang Roar — passed away on Wednesday (1 June) morning at the age of 82. He collapsed while having breakfast and paramedics later failed to resuscitate him.

Mr Ganesan suffered from a stroke in 2011 that left him wheel-chair bound and with a speech impediment. He had been living in a nursing home at Sarkies Road since.

11703129_10153405531173255_1734666360306892952_nSource

How Kallang Roar was born

Mr Ganesan, affectionately known as ‘Gani’ by Singapore football family, took leadership under Football Association Singapore (FAS) from 1974 -1981.

He moved Singapore’s Malaysia Cup matches from Jalan Besar Stadium to the new National Stadium in 1974. In an official statement, FAS commented that “[t]he bold and visionary move led to 55,000-strong crowds flocking to the Grand Old Dame to cheer on the Lions and the various national teams,  and in turn helped to create the famous Kallang Roar.”

That’s right, Chu Beng Huat was not the original creator of Kallang Roar.

Singapore football during its ‘golden period’

Mr Ganesan remodelled the National Football League from 118 teams to a powerful collective of 30 teams, a legacy that exists to this day. He was also credited for creating the Lion City Cup, which subsequently became the model for FIFA’s U-16 World Championships.

Mr Ganesan’s stewardship of the FAS was also marked by football success on the pitch. The Lions’ first victory under his leadership in 1977 was memorable because it was 12 years since they won the Malaysia Cup. In 1980, the Lions managed to win the title again and almost reached the Olympics Games before losing to Iran.

Source

FAS stated that, “Under his reign, Singapore footballers like Quah Kim Song, S. Rajagopal, Mohammed Noh, Dollah Kassim, Samad Allapitchay, Edmund Wee and a host of others became football superstars in our country, well-known by all, and much loved for their memorable performances on the pitch.”

Close ties with the Lions

Mr Ganesan was a successful lawyer, but he will be remembered from the inspiration and encouragement that he gave to the Lions. He was vocal and animated on the bench, showing his passion for Singapore football.

He was also known as a father figure to the players. Despite his busy schedule, he attended the Lions’ training each day. He even aided some of the players who struggled financially with his own income.

The bond he forged with the Lions were lifelong.

Source

He will be dearly missed

A minute of silence will be observed this week before the kick-off to all Singaporean football matches in his remembrance.

I’m sure that he had few regrets, as he spent his life doing what he loved with devotion. He was a great man, a role model to sportsmen and he was humble with his accomplishments. He stood firm with his beliefs and would stand up for it.

Mr Ganesan was considered as one of the greatest sportsman administrator that Singapore ever had due to his hardwork and determination. The decisions he made paved the way for Singapore football. He was not afraid to be hands-on the field to ensure the policies he implemented worked. The mark that he left in Singapore’s sporting industry was deep and impactful.

“After all, it matters not how a man dies, but how he lives.”

Roy Ngerng Employed 3 Tai Chi Defence Tactics Against PM Lee’s Lawyer

Roy Ngerng’s Un-Un-Un-Un-Unbreakable Defence Against Davinder Singh

The court case between Roy Ngerng and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has entered the second day. Yesterday, Roy Ngerng grilled Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the the defamation lawsuit. Today (2 July), the tables were turned as Roy Ngerng was cross-examined by PM Lee’s lawyer, Davinder Singh.

Ngerng employed 3 defence tactics to swat away against Mr Singh’s burning questions.

MustShareNews analyses Ngerng’s 3 defence tactics.

Tactic #1 – Claiming ignorance in the face of danger

Ngerng’s first defence tactic is the conventional idea of “playing dumb”.

He claimed ignorance about the magnitude of using the phrase “criminal misappropriation” in the article that was found to have defamed the PM.

Roy also noted that he had to look into the dictionary for the meaning of “criminal misappropriation” after receiving the court letters by Mr Lee’s lawyers

I am not legally trained … I do not know what criminal misappropriation in legal terms (meant)

- Roy Ngerng Yi Ling

Why then, did Roy even use the word in his article?

confused animated GIF Source

Counterattack by Singh

Davinder Singh did not buy Ngerng’s story.

He pointed out that Ngerng is familiar about the City Harvest Church scandal — the church was accused of misusing church funds — and Ngerng had used City Harvest Church as examples in his controversial article.

Mr Singh continued his attacks that Ngerng should have be aware of the seriousness of the word “criminal misappropriation”.

You knew that (your) article illustrated how the Government had misappropriate the CPF monies, you knew that you had a comparison to City Harvest Church in circumstances where it has been reported where the four City Harvest accused were charged with misappropriation, you knew that misappropriation was a crime. (But) you have the audacity in your affidavit and in court yesterday and today to tell the court you have no intention to defame?

-Lawyer Davinder Singh

Mr Singh is not letting Ngerng off easily.

dis gon b gud animated GIF Source

Tactic #2 – Proclaim your admiration for your enemy

Mr Singh also asked Ngerng if he had thought the Prime Minister had committed a crime in relation to Central Provident Fund (CPF) monies.

Ngerng replied that he have never met PM Lee before, and thus does not think that PM Lee committed a crime with the CPF monies. He even added that he saw PM Lee as a “compassionate person”

It is not right for me to make an accusation or assumption … (I) saw him as a compassionate person … I do not think PM had misappropriated the fund, I do not know him in person.

- Roy Ngerng

Source

Singh’s Continuous Attack

Roy’s comment broke no ice in Mr Singh’s cold and blunt attacks, as Drew and Napier’s representative continued firing away.

Mr Singh emphasised that as Ngerng’s previous jobs was involved in crafting messages, Ngerng should understand the importance to use concise, clear, and proper language.

Mr Singh further asserted that Ngerng’s desire to rise among the people and be a champion for them had gone too far, resulting in the defamation made filed PM Lee.

so consumed by his (Ngerng) desire to be a champion of CPF issues and wanted to enhance his own standing and therefore made untrue accusations against Mr Lee.

- Davinder Singh

Tactic #3 – Staying Humble

Ngerng simply and humbly retorted that he does not care about fame, asserting that if the Singapore Government will takes care of the people, he will put a stop to his vigilante activities.

If the Government takes care of Singaporeans, I’d be more than happy to stop writing, and be happy to be a waiter or cleaner

- Roy Ngerng

Oh please Roy, we all know what you are really to hint at.

Roy Ngerng – The Master of Tai Chi

Ngerng certainly display his gifted tai chi skills against Davinder Singh today.

However, it remains to be seen if Ngerng can use his talent to push away the damages to be paid to PM Lee that will be announced tomorrow.

Ever wondered which schools some of these locals celebrities came from?

So did we! The nosy parker in us thought it’ll be fun to poke our noses and find out which schools these celebrities came from. Some might come as a surprise to you.

It seems that all is fair and square in showbiz. Having a degree from a reputable university does not mean one would succeed in the industry. On the flipside, a degree holder’s acting prowess and fan base may pale in comparison to an artiste from the “less prestigious” school.

Moral of the story? Don’t let your qualifications (or lack thereof) deter you from chasing your dreams.

We analysed 12 tertiary institutions some celebrities were from and here are some similarities we found that made them who they are today:

1. Anglo-Chinese Junior College:

Are schools a determining factor in future success?

As the government says (brace yourself for some propaganda), every school is a good school.

There is no hard and fast rule to success in showbiz – some of these celebrities may have attended what society deems as the more reputable schools while others did not, but still managed to establish a foothold in the industry.

Of course, we’re not saying that studying is not important – it definitely is! But ultimately, as cliché as it sounds, we all make our destinies.

This Guy Redefines ‘Good Samaritan’ By Saving Tattooed Man Lying On Pavement At 2am

He thought the man was drunk but didn’t walk away

Imagine this. You’re hanging around Nicoll Highway at 2am on a weekday.

You could be YOLO-swagging and going for a late night spin in your new ride.

You could be outrageously breaching a curfew and racing home to avoid the wrath of adults.

Whatever it is, you don’t care about anything else but yourself.

Well, why would you have to care about anything else at that hour?

Then, you see this:

cai yinzhou 1Source

Your head goes into a frenzy of options upon realising you might have just bumped into the stereotypical pai kia wasted from drinking all the things you wouldn’t ever drink at this hour.

After a few moments, you’re down to four options: A) turn B) the C) f*** D) around.

Yesterday (2 July), a humble chap who goes by the name of Cai Yinzhou, however, chose option E — to make a ballsy move of checking out the man on the floor who’s also buff and tattooed enough to scare away any normal person.

Not to mention option E (i): snap a quick photo for Facebook, so that kaypohs like us to turn it into a story.

(During a chat we had with Yinzhou, he clarified that the above photo was taken while he was waiting for the ambulance and after he moved the man into a recovery position. He also sent a photo of the man — not posted online — to his doctor friends, seeking advice from them.)

Check out how the lifesaver (who is also his own photographer) documented the incident:

Here’s where we brofist him

Cai Yinzhou taught us a valuable lesson through his selfless deed, that being a Good Samaritan now means having no fear of stereotypical bad guys who suddenly show up on the floor at 2am.

Oh, and that you can’t be 21st century Mother Theresa until you release the news on the same platform you used to post embarrassing selfies-of-you-in-braces on.

Yinzhou, your exemplary and honourable behaviour will go on to touch millions of other technologically advanced lives.

Thank you.

This Singaporean Couple’s Epic Star Wars Themed Wedding Photoshoot Just Won The Internet

Pre-wedding photoshoot gets picked up and appears in various geek websites

Adrian and Adeline are two completely nondescript Singaporeans who just happened to be massive fans of the most awesome film series ever, Star Wars.

They also happened to be getting married to each other. What better way to celebrate their marriage than to weave their love for Star Wars with their love for each other?

Local photographer Mezame Shashin-ka, founder and creative director of The Art of Mezame, jumped at the chance to fulfill their dream, faster than you can say “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for”.

11182776_718824544906811_2728546122315897381_oSource

A Star Wars themed pre-wedding photoshoot was planned, and the dedicated crew did not let bad weather prevent them from getting all the shots in just one day.

What happened next was completely unexpected.

“We didn’t expect [geek websites] io9 or Geektyrant to pick this up,” says Mezame in an email interview with MustShareNews.com.

That’s right. Adrian and Adeline’s Star Wars-inspired photoshoot is making the rounds of the internet, and surprising just about everyone involved. Jar Jar included.

While Mezame and the couple had a discussion about the possibility of the pictures going viral,

“All thoughts of that were pushed to the back as we strived to make this shoot an epic.”

- Mezame

AKA, all they wanted to do was create something truly memorable for the happy couple.

Judging from the amazing result, I’d say the happy couple just got happier than the Rebel Alliance was when Luke destroyed the Death Star.

Check out the rest of the album via Facebook here.

Not their first themed photoshoot

The Art of Mezame has some experience in putting their clients into the shoes of their favourite heroes. Previous projects include Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, and Altaria from video game Assassin’s Creed.

Mezame hopes that the success of this photoshoot helps inspire other Singaporeans to pursue their passion, and sends the message that “anything is possible as long as we just go on ahead with something and just do it”.

May the Force always be with you, Mezame.

He Was Shocked; He Cried; He Ended With A Patriotic Speech On Freedom

The assessment for damages of defamation between Roy Ngerng and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong enters the final day.

Ngerng took the stand again to be cross-examined by PM Lee’s lawyer, Davinder Singh, after the session ended abruptly on the second day.

During yesterday’s cross-examination by Mr Singh, Ngerng displayed his penchant for tai chi when he skilfully deflected Mr Singh’s questions.

Today (3 July), there was to be no repeat in the court room, as Roy decided to lead the court on an emotional roller coaster.

MustShareNews guides you through Ngerng’s emotional ups and downs.

He Was In Shock

Upon taking the stand, Ngerng expressed his shock when he received the letters of demand by PM Lee’s lawyer.

He repeated the phrase multiple times, as if trying to tell us just how shocked he was when the letters arrived on 19, 26, and 27 May.

Ngerng also established that it was due to his state of shock that resulted in him making mistakes in replying to them.

I was in a new state of shock

- Roy Ngerng Yi Ling

He Lied

Ngerng later clarified that he had made mistakes in his affidavit — a written sworn statement of fact under an oath.

The blogger had initially claimed that he had sent only 58 emails regarding the “takedown of his blogpost” to journalists, but it is revealed that he had actually sent the emails to 82 journalists instead of the claimed 58.

Ngerng defended himself by stating that the mistake was made because he acted in a over zealous manner.

Mr Singh later wanted to clarify if the mistake was a result of Ngerng acting in an overzealous manner.

Did you act in an overzealous manner?

- Davinder Singh

To which Ngerng replied…..

No, I did not.

- Roy Ngerng

He Was Shocked And Tired

Ngerng again brought up the an old point that he was in a state of shock because he did not expect to be sued by PM Lee.

When Mr Singh attempted to further question Ngerng, Ngerng said that he did not understand the question, because he did not have enough sleep.

Singh: “Are you in a state of shock?”

Roy: “…I haven’t had enough sleep”

tired animated GIF Source

It was then that Mr Singh had enough and snapped, rubbishing Ngerng’s continuous claims of being in a state of shock.

Far from being shocked and scared, every step of the way, you were calculating and lying!

- Davinder Singh

He Lied Again

Mr Singh wasted no time in following up his attack, he pointed out that Ngerng had been untruthful about views of the controversial blog post.

The Drew & Napier Chief Executive Officer (CEO) asserted that Ngerng had initially refused to provide information about the views of The Heart Truths homepage.

…you chose not to share [the information]with the court

- Davinder Singh

Ngerng retorted that he did not know he could provide statistic views from the homepage.

Mr Singh followed up his argument that at the time of the incident, the blog homepage – where controversial blog posts could be read in full – had ten times the page views compared to the blog post.

Since the article can be read from the homepage, Mr Singh argued that the homepage views should be taken to be the number of views for the article.

The blogger counter argued that the popularity of the blog post in question should be measured by the page views, and not the homepage, which contains other articles.

He Cried And Gave A Patriotic Speech

It was at that point in time that Ngerng broke down in tears.

With a stack of tissues in his hands, Ngerng delivered a passionate and patriotic speech, explaining his motivations to speak up on the behalf of all Singaporeans.

We all know I’m being persecuted because I’ve spoken up on the CPF. And the PM said (on Wednesday) that he has been waiting to sue me … I do not hate the PM and I sincerely apologise to him but we need to speak up for the people.

- Roy Ngerng

After his sobbing, Ngnerng requested for a break.

The hearing was resumed at 2:30pm and adjourned at 3pm.

Is Roy’s emotional roller coaster for real?

Roy Ngerng’s emotional roller coaster on the last day could all be just an act.

After all, according to IMDB, Ngerng acted in two films before being sued by the Prime Minister.

What is next?

The hearing for assessment of damages that Roy Ngerng have to pay to PM Lee has concluded after three days.

Written submissions and supporting documentation for both sides will be due on 31 August.

The judgement for the damages will be released later this year.

2 Members Of Parliament Will Clear Our Doubts On The General Election Date In Parliament

They Will Probe The Status Of The Committee Responsible For Drawing Electoral Boundaries

The next General Election must constitutionally be held by January 2017, and many experts expect the election to be held this year.

We have done our fair share of prophesying as well, and predicted that the General Election will be held by this coming December.

Thanks to Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Yee Jenn Jong from the Workers’ Party (WP) and Member of Parliament (MP) Arthur Fong from the People’s Action Party (PAP), we may actually find out if the General Election will take place anytime soon.

Both MPs submitted questions to the coming Parliament session regarding the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC), asking if the committee has been formed.

The formation of the EBRC will be the first sign that the General Election is imminent.

The next Parliament session will occur the week after next on 13 July.

What Is The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee?

The EBRC will be made up of five civil servants all of whom will be appointed by the Prime Minister. The Committee will be chaired by the Cabinet Secretary — Tan Kee Yong.

The duty of the EBRC is to reorganise the boundaries of the Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and Single-Member Constituencies (SMCs) according to population shifts around Singapore.

As of April this year, there is a population increase of more than 100,000 since the last election in 2011. Constituencies such as Sengkang West SMC, Punggol East SMC and Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC where the population numbers has grown significantly must be prepared for any potential changes made by the ERBC.

Here is the map of the current electoral boundaries.

Source

Once the EBRC is formed, they will begin work on the report regarding the reorganisation in GRCs and SMCs, the report may take up to four months to be completed, as it was in previous elections.

Once the report is submitted to the Prime Minister, a General Election may be called.

MP Arthur J Fong’s Questions

MP Fong from the West Coast GRC is one of the MP who will be probing the Parliament on the formation of the EBRC.

He will be asking on the guidelines of the EBRC.

Source

Thankfully, there is another MP on the same topic.

NCMP Yee Jenn Jong’s Questions

NCMP Yee, who entered into the Parliament on the merit of being one of the best losers in the 2011 General Election. He had previously contested under the WP in Joo Chiat SMC, and lost by a mere 382 votes.

Unlike MP Fong, NCMP Yee will be going into the details about the EBRC.

NCMP Yee will be querying the relevant Minister on the identities of the committee members, a concrete period that the ERBC report is expected to be published, and the exact time period between the report’s publication and the election date.

He added that the Government should make it a point to announce such important details to keep Singaporeans in the know on when the General Election will be held. He had to guess when will be an appropriate time to bring this matter up in Parliament.

I have to second guess when is the best time to ask the question, and this is my best guess.

- NCMP Yee Jenn Jong

What Can We Do?

Thanks to NCMP Yee both of the MPs, Singaporeans will be more enlightened on whether to expect an Election this year, after the Parliament session on 13 July.

Let us also hope that the Government will take the advice from NCMP Yee to announce the formation of the EBRC beforehand, rather than having to wait for the Members of Parliament to raise the question in Parliament.

Meanwhile, let’s just  chill and wait for the Parliament session on July 13, teh for you?

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Yan Kay Kay [SM Spotlight 02]

$

SM Spotlight is a MustShareNews series where we put the spotlight on popular Singaporean social media celebrities.

She’s more than just a pretty face

Does the name Yan Kay Kay ring a bell?

Maybe you remember her as blogger queen Xiaxue’s ex-BFF who was embroiled in the Xiaxue vs. Gushcloud saga. Or maybe you better remember her for co-hosting Click Network show Chick vs Dick, where she challenged Paul Twohill in everything from stuffing marshmallows in their mouths to performing fire stunts to pole dancing.

Is there anything this spunky chick can’t do?

We find out 10 things about Kay Kay you didn’t know:

1. Her birth name is…

tTGLEjwSource

Yan Qihua. If you’ve been wondering if Kay Kay is her real name, the mystery ends here. It was initially a nickname, most probably derived from the Cantonese pronunciation of her original name, “Kay Wah”.

2. She was a Deal or No Deal briefcase girl

Kay Kay was Case #22 in the second season of Deal or No Deal hosted by Adrian Pang. Other notable briefcase girls in the show are Andrea Fonseka, Velda Tan, and Melissa Faith Yeo.

1928294_6971004362_6068_nSource

 3. She epitomises girl power

In an episode of Chick vs. Dick, Paul and Kay Kay were tasked to catch frogs. Sensing Paul’s hesitation, Kay Kay volunteered to go first and scooped up the frogs into a plastic bag with just one gloved hand.

Besides catching those slimy creatures, Kay Kay also has no qualms about eating insects. Watch as Kay Kay bravely tries silkworms, tarantulas and… a crocodile claw:

What else can she not do?

Cockroaches may be a girl’s nightmare, but not Kay Kay’s. In fact, she can even catch them with her bare hands.

EeyuPDSource

Yup, that was Kay Kay catching roaches. No masks, no gloves, no nothing. Watch the full episode here:

4. She was from a chain of elite schools

Kay Kay may be a model who won 2009 Channel 5 reality show The S Factor and was even ranked #7 in FHM Top 100 Sexiest Women Singapore in 2008, but she sure is no bimbo. Did you know she scored a whopping 264 for her PSLE? She would then go on to Raffles Girls School, Anglo Chinese Junior College and eventually graduate from National University of Singapore.

5. She has an entrepreneurial spirit

She started her blogshop KandyKayne in 2011 and modelled for her shop. She later opened a KandyKayne boutique at Bugis Village. However, KandyKayne does not seem to be in operation anymore.

bts7blogSource

Two years later, Kay Kay started an Instagram account with her friend called My Dream Bag, which allows people to sell their preloved branded items on the account for a rate. Today, My Dream Bag has a strong following of 28.2k and is constantly updated with new bags and other luxury goods.

6. She was not born with a dimple

Have you been mesmerised by Kay Kay’s cute, dimpled smile?

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 11.09.28 amSource

Then you might be surprised to know that it wasn’t au naturel. A dimple is still a dimple after all, and we aren’t complaining.

8. She has a coverup tattoo for a coverup tattoo

Everyone’s gotta have their own signature tattoo, right? Xiaxue’s got the crown, Eunice Annabel’s got the Victoria’s Secret wings and… Kay Kay’s got the cherry blossom.

Her original tattoo was a small star behind her right ear, which she got with Xiaxue and Fann Wong’s sister, Fan Wenqing when they were close friends. She later got a snake tattoo as a coverup…

tatt11-500x358 (1)Source

…but eventually decided to get a coverup of the coverup, and ended up with a cherry blossom tattoo.

tatt7-copy-375x500Source

8. She kissed a girl and she liked it

When they were still BFFs, of course.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you would have known that Kay Kay was Xiaxue’s ex-BFF after their public fallout. In fact, they used to be so close they shared a passionate kiss.

Needless to say, this controversial video went viral and Click Network was requested by MDA to take the video down.

But for your viewing pleasure, we’ve found one here:

9. She dares to talk about her bedroom habits

Apart from the kissing video, this controversial video was also often talked about online. Watch as Paul and Kay Kay get raunchy in a kinky game of Truth or Dare. We’re not spoiling it for you – you’ll have to watch for yourself!

*viewer discretion advised

Kay Kay also planted a kiss on her co-host Paul in Part 2 here (lucky you, Paul!):

10. She can tie a cherry stalk with her tongue

This makes the list because I don’t know anyone who can actually do that. Sounds preeetttyyy easy, but it’s actually a really tall order. She can even do double knots and triple knots on the cherry stalk!

Can you do that too?

Watch from 5:25 – 6:11:

5 minutes with Kay Kay

We had an email interview with Kay Kay, who kindly obliged. Of course, we made use of this opportunity to throw her 5 questions to better know her on a personal level.

1. Are you in a relationship now?
Yes I am.

2. So you went out with Elliot and Ming Han (@dmingthing) in A Date with the Stars. Are they close to your perception of an ideal man or what are some traits that your ideal man should have?
Hmm parts of them yes. Elliot is sweet and smart and Ming is thoughtful and supportive, all important traits in an ideal man. He should also have drive and be grammatically sound.

3. We all know your kissing video with Xiaxue went viral years back but now the both of you have fallen out. If you were to kiss another girl now, who would it be and why?
Wow so hard to choose. Probably Sylvia from NOC; I’m obsessed with her lips. Having said that, I doubt I’d do another video like that for real. It’s not part of the image I want to portray now.

4. Do you have any plans for a baby?
Haha no I don’t. Babies are a lot of work and I don’t see myself devoting so much to them as of now.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Successful and happy and fulfilled, in all aspects of my life. My YouTube channel, my businesses, my personal life. While I have many goals, I’ve learnt it’s more about the journey. There’s not much point achieving my dreams if I do so unhappily and it’s a struggle all the way there. In 5 years, I want to be able to say I’ve succeeded in everything I set out to achieve and I’ve enjoyed myself every step of the way.

The Babe of All Trades

Can’t get enough of Kay Kay? Watch as she takes on different jobs from a flow ride instructor to a fishmonger here.

Minister Ng Eng Hen Lets Slip New PAP Candidates, Among Other Things

$

Defence Minister Ng spoke about a bunch of stuff in an interview with ST

The People’s Action Party (PAP) experienced their biggest loss in 2011-2012. They lost a total of 7 seats to the Workers’ Party (WP) in the span of one year — at Aljunied GRC, Punggol East SMC, and Hougang SMC.

With the General Election expected to be held soon, many people are forecasting strategies that the PAP may employ in the coming General Election to win back the lost seats. Here at MustShareNews, we have also contributed in the prediction of PAP’s strategy.

Yesterday (5 July), Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen cleared some doubts and revealed information on PAP’s strategy to regain opposition wards in the coming General Election.

We guide you across the tasty tidbits Dr Ng provided us with.

The strategy that the PAP will adopt

Initially, the Defence Minister gave a grim assessment about the strategies of the PAP in opposition wards.

In the interview with ST, he asserted that although the ruling party will field a capable team to fight for every vote in opposition wards, he also explained that due to realities on the ground (i.e. PAP might not have enough support to win), the ruling party cannot afford to field a full-strength team in opposition wards.

We will fight for each vote and we will put in candidates that we feel can be a better team to take care of the municipal issues. But the realpolitik is if we feel we don’t have that support, we’ll have to make our own calculations.

Why would we want to field somebody that we know has a higher chance of being rejected and deprive ourselves of an office-holder? Suppose you put five ministers in (Aljunied). Does that serve the purpose? Is it fair to other constituencies who have shown us greater support?

- Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen

Instead, the strategy that the PAP will be looking at, according to Dr Ng, is simply to stick to its “golden rule”. The “golden rule” is simply to field a team capable of taking care of the town regardless of the candidates’ profile.

That’s the minimum standard: that they have honesty, integrity and competency, and pass muster.

- Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen

The new faces in PAP who may be fielded

Aside from shining some light on the strategy that the PAP will employ, Dr Ng also highlighted some names as potential PAP candidates, who may be contesting in the opposition wards.

We introduce them to you.

1. Chua Eng Leong

Source

Possible Area of Contest: Aljunied GRC

Chua Eng Leong is the son of former Cabinet Minister, Chua Sian Chin, who passed away last year (26 February 2014).

The private banker is also currently the chairman of PAP’s branch in Eunos — located within Aljunied GRC. As a grassroots leader for the PAP, he can be seen in PAP walkabouts in the Eunos ward.

Source

Mr Chua intensified the battle for the Aljunied GRC when he reportedly restarted Meet-the-People Sessions on Monday nights in Eunos. His strategy deviated from the ruling party’s practice — the PAP doesn’t usually offer Meet-the People sessions to opposition-voting residents.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if the tactic from the PAP’s Eunos chairman will be effective in winning the votes of the residents.

In 2013, Mr Chua remained coy on his interest in contesting for the coming General Election when he revealed to The Straits Times that it is up to the party whether or not to field him in.

It’s not for me to decide, it’s for the party to decide if I should be fielded.

- Chua Eng Leong

2. Kahar Hassan

Source

Possible Area of Contest: Aljunied GRC

Mr Kahar is currently a Deputy Director of Infrastructure at Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT).

The Deputy Director has more than 17 years of engineering experience in both public and private sectors. His portfolio includes managing large-scale projects such as the construction of the Hougang MRT station and the Braddell Road underpass.

Aside from managing our public transport, Mr Kahar is also the chairman at the PAP’s branch of Kaki Bukit after previously volunteering at Tampines East CCC for 15 years.

Mr Kahar is also very involved in grassroot matters of Kaki Bukit — situated within the Aljunied GRC.

Source
Source

When asked in an interview with MyPaper in 2014, if he will stand for election, Mr Kahar gave a politically correct answer.

As long as the community benefits from my efforts, I am happy to serve in any capacity.

- Kahar Hassan

3. Victor Lye

Source

Possible Area of Contest: Aljunied GRC

Victor Lye have been the chairman of the PAP’s branch at the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol branch since the 1990s. He is also the CEO of Shenton Insurance Pte Ltd.

Mr Lye have been campaigning for the PAP in the Aljunied  GRC since the loss of the ruling party in 2011. He regularly conducts his walkabouts as a recognised face among the residents, and tries his best to project the presence of PAP in the opposition stronghold.

Source

Because of his wealth of experience, Mr Lye is also considered as a potential leader to lead the PAP team of Aljunied in the coming General Election in our list of the 5 potential leaders to lead PAP in Aljunied.

We have also noticed that his Facebook profile picture have been changed to more professional-looking one since the last time we checked out his profile, maybe he is readying himself for an election?

After: Victor Lye’s Current Facebook Profile From 14 June

4. K. Muralidharan Pillai

K. Muralidharan Pillai.jpgSource

Possible Area of Contest: Aljunied GRC

K. Murahlidharan Pillai is a lawyer at Rajah & Tann, he is the Head of the Commercial Litigation Practice in the company.

Apart from fighting for the people in the courtroom, Mr Pillai also serves the people as a grassroots chairman for the PAP’s branch at Paya Lebar — within the Aljunied GRC.

Like Mr Chua, the lawyer also offers Meet-the-People session at Hougang Avenue 1, where he dispenses his legal advice to residents who attends the session.

Mr Pillai, unfortunately is low profile — he does not have a Facebook nor had any interview with the mainstream media about his work at Paya Lebar.

5. Chan Hui Yuh

Hui Yuh Chan, PBMSource

Possible Area of Contest: Aljunied GRC

Chan Hui Yuh is currently a Marketing Director at Jingslink Marketing Pte Ltd since 2004. She was also a voice-over artist in her younger days, her portfolio includes voicing over for the Public Announcement system for the SMRT — Aljunied residents may look forward to hearing her melodious voice during the General Election if she contests.

Ms Chan is also the chairwoman of the PAP’s branch at Serangoon, she had previously held the position of chairwoman at the East Coast GRC’s Siglap CCC.

Ms Chan’s move to the Serangoon branch have been speculated to have something to do with the fact that the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the Serangoon division is also a woman – Workers’ Party chairman Sylvia Lim.

Ms Chan has since cleared up the air that her move was for a personal reason when she was speaking to Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao last year.

I can cut down my travel time, and thus have more time to spend with my two young children.

- Chan Hui Yuh

The chairwoman is often spotted doing her walkabout in Serangoon.

Source

Ms Chan gave an ambiguous answer when asked by the Singapore Chinese newspaper if she will be standing for the coming General Election.

I believe in the party’s values, and there are many ways to serve. If (party leaders) decide to put me in that position, I would definitely do my best.

- Chan Hui Yuh

6. Lee Hong Chuang

Source

Possible Area of Contest: Hougang SMC

Lee Hong Chung was the Vice President of the Singapore Gymnastics Organisation (SGO).

Mr Lee is currently the chairman of the PAP’s branch at Hougang, taking over Desmond Choo in September 2014. Prior to the appointment, he served as a grassroots volunteer in Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Teck Ghee constituency in Ang Mo Kio for over 20 years.

Since then, Mr Lee have been regularly doing his walkabouts in Hougang –currently under the charge of WP’s Png Eng Huat.

When asked about his prospects for being a candidate in the General Election by Lianhe Zaobao, the previous SGO Vice President gave an indirect reply.

I know there are a lot of speculations in the ground, but my focus is still on the Hougang residents. There is a need to build a good framework to take care of residents. This remains unchanged.

- Lee Hong Chuang

7. Yee Chia Hsing

 Source

Possible Area of Contest: Punggol East SMC

According to Bloomberg, Yee Chia Hsing has been the Head of Catalist at CIMB Bank Singapore since 2011. His main responsibility lies in helping Catalist companies on the Singapore Exchange Market (SGX).

Apart from his role in the finance sector, Mr Yee is also the chairman of the PAP’s branch in Punngol East, taking over from Dr Koh Poh Koon in 2014. He has also been a volunteer with the Ren Ci Hospital since  2009.

The Punggol East Chairman has a low profile in the media. However, we can see from his Facebook page that he have been doing walkabouts in Punggol East — currently under the charge of Lee Li Lian of the WP.

Source
Source

Will They Be Contesting?

None of the above candidates have been officially cited as a potential office-holder yet. However, these names are definitely making their presence felt among the residents in opposition wards, and we’ll probably see them mentioned in public more often.

The PAP Hedge plan

Dr Ng further clarified in the interview that future Cabinet Ministers are unlikely to enter via the backdoor, as a Nominated MP (NMP).

The ruling party is constitutionally able to parachute minister-material candidates into the Parliament by making the candidate a NMP, before drafting the candidate as a Minister in the Cabinet. However, Dr Ng clarified that this is unlikely to happen at all.

To have the electorate vote against somebody and then to bring him in as an NMP to make him a minister doesn’t speak well of the system.

Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen

Your Move, Opposition

The strategy of the PAP is becoming clearer thanks to Dr Ng — grassroot leaders will be involved in the General Election in some capacity, their walking the ground, Meet-the-People sessions will eventually mean something at the end of the day.

Prof Bilveer Singh told Today Online that the WP is also experiencing the same dilemma over the candidates to field in their wards.

Prof Singh, a Political Scientist from the National University of Singapore (NUS), explained that WP’s current Aljunied team cannot afford to switch constituencies as they risk backlash from residents.

[The Aljunied residents may] punish the WP for ‘abandoning’ them.

- Prof Bilveer Singh

All the talks about the political strategy of the ruling party and the opposition party can only mean one thing — the coming General Election will be exciting indeed.

Hong Kong Protesters Burn Photos Of Lees, Hold Small Whiteboards Angrily — Because Amos Yee

“I will not travel to Singapore anymore. Keep it up, Amos Yee!”

On Saturday (4 July), Hong Kongers turned out in droves to protest against Singapore’s mistreatment of teen blogger Amos Yee. By droves, we mean about 50 or so irate protesters.

They’re doing this to display their anger towards the treatment Amos has received and show that Amos is not alone.

The protesters burned paper images of former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his son, current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Ever wanted to see a photo of Lee Kuan Yew half-heartedly catching fire?

That fire is so disinterested in burning paper, it’s not even doing the one thing fire is supposed to do best:

“Lee Kuan Yew go to hell!”

“Shame on Lee Hsien Loong!”

“Shame shame Singaporean government!”

“Free free Amos Yee!”

Ouch.

The fury doesn’t end here.

Over 50 protesters put their anger on tiny whiteboards

Hong Kong protesters aren’t stopping at the burning of Lee Kuan Yew and Prime Minister Lee’s photos. They’re also exhibiting their support for Amos Yee with one line declarations written on whiteboards.

And one Facebook page — Free Amos Yee – HK — has made sure that the entire world knows this.

They have since immortalised the photos on Facebook.

We have compiled some of the most striking responses to enlighten you about the anger the protesters are feeling:

“Lee family & Singapore are f***ing disgrace!”

“I will not travel to Singapore ever again. Keep it up Amos Yee!”

The influence Amos’ voice has on the world is really starting to amaze us. Whether this is a good or bad thing cannot yet be determined.

But these protesters form a vocal minority of only about 50 people, less than the average attendance of an S-League game. There weren’t really that many interested Hong Kongers.

So if you’re feeling a little fiery from watching all that fire, chillax. Hong Kong probably doesn’t really hate us.

Amos Yee Is Free, But Wants To Appeal His Conviction Because He Never Committed A Crime

Yet Another Twist — Amos Yee Saga Is Far From Over

The Amos Yee saga has taken another plot twist.

At around 3pm today (6 July), half an hour into Amos’ hearing, Amos was to have received a backdated jail sentence of 4 weeks.

A backdated jail sentence meant that the jail sentence of 4 weeks starts from the time he had first served in remand: 2 June.

Amos is now free to walk out of court a free boy blogger.

Yet, according to Amos’s lawyer, Alfred Dodwell, the 16-year-old will appeal against his conviction.

what animated GIF Source

That’s right, Amos is attempting to challenge the conviction. He feels a crime wasn’t even committed in the first place.

Here is a tweet from the Channel NewsAsia, to clear your doubts.

Alfred Dodwell, Amos’ lawyer has confirmed with the media that Amos will be appealing against the conviction and challenging the fact that any crime was commited in the first place.

The journey here has been long and arduous, ridden with lots of obstacles and hurdles. We have somehow gotten here, we have confirmed with our client that he wants to appeal against the conviction.

Let’s not run away with the idea that just because he’s remorseful and stuff, that is in relation to the social context. Whether this was a crime or not, still remains a question we want to determine in High Court.

- Alfred Dodwell

Amos will challenge two charges — the first for making offensive remarks against Christianity, and the second, for circulating obscene imagery.

Amos was found guilty for these two charges earlier this year (12 May).

Let us all keep it in mind that Amos had previously rejected the option of probation and a term in the Reformative Training Centre in favour for a jail term.

Despite the judge ruling his sentence as a backdated jail term which has already been served, Amos chose to challenge the entire conviction, which just brings us back to square one.

The decision at the court hearing

Prior to the court hearing today, Amos was admitted to the Accident & Emergency department of the Changi General Hospital from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) last night (5 July).

Speaking to the Channel News Asia, Amos’s lawyer Alfred Dodwell revealed that Amos has not been eating well and thus was feeling faint and giddy in IMH.

[Amos has] not been eating well, perhaps loss of appetite or no appetite, understandably so and hence his blood sugar went down.

- Alfred Dodwell

Amos was back at the IMH the next morning where he was remanded for the past two weeks for a mandatory treatment order after it was revealed that the 16-year-old may be suffering from autism-spectrum disorder.

What’s Up With Amos

Judging from his latest actions, Amos is not willing to let things off so quickly, and is definitely looking to prolong his 15 minutes of fame.

It should be clear now that Amos is not a simple person. In fact, the doctor in charge of Amos’ assessment at the IMH has clarified that Amos does not have any mental disorder — which means Amos is deliberately and consciously challenging the government.

When leaving the court today, Amos looked run-down and defeated, a far cry from the 16-year-old potty mouth teenager we saw before he went into remand.

We actually wonder if it is really his decision to challenge the charges.

The entire saga is getting really tiring now, not more exciting since we are back to square one of the entire saga — Amos challenging the charges.

9 Quotes From PM Lee At The SG50+ Conference That Show He Knows What’s Up

These are only 9 out of countless things PM Lee has said right

Look at our Prime Minister:

pm lee 2Source

He’s been through a lot last week — barbequing thousands of steaks for you carnivores, and engaging Roy Ngerng in a verbal boxing match.

Yet, at the SG50+ conference organised by Institute of Policy Studies and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy on 2 July, where he was engaged in a thorough discussion with Dr Fareed Zakaria, he emerged as smiley as usual.

Like in his Facebook profile picture:

pm lee 3Source

And his selfie with the Team Singapore netballers:

pm lee 4Source

Okay okay, enough of fangirling the Prime Minister.

We think this joyous and confident demeanour of his can only mean one thing: he’s a legit Prime Minister and knows it.

Here are 9 totally quotable things he said at the dialogue that will timelessly show everyone how legit of a Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong really is:

1. On Singapore’s greatest challenge before independence

pm lee quotes 1Source

When Dr Fareed Zakaria quoted Lee Kuan Yew’s early belief that it would be “a political economic and geographic absurdity to have an independent Singapore”, this is what PM Lee had to say:

“Well I think it was to disprove Lee Kuan Yew’s early conviction. That was the most important thing, to believe that you can build a country here, there’s a future, and we can make it happen.”

If there’s any leader who could win in a debate with Lee Kuan Yew, it would have to be PM Lee.

 2. On what accomplishing what Singapore has achieved as a nation

“It’s an entirely unnatural state of affairs and one which we should count our blessings for, if not every day at least every election.”

In other words, #VOTEPAP.

pm lee quotes 2Source

For being legitimately funny, this makes the list.

3. On the relevance of terrorism in Singapore

pm lee quotes 3Source

“It’s a real challenge. The threats [early Singapore had to face e.g. Japanese occupation]have changed but in fact threats have not disappeared.”

We love how PM Lee is so real about this. Time to stop geng-ing during NS boys (and girls)!

4. On a conversation he once had with a student about Racial Harmony

pm lee quotes 4Source

“I went around to visit [a]school (that was celebrating Racial Harmony Day) one day, they put up an exhibition and they trained their kids to be docents.  The kids took me through the slides and this is how we were and these were riots and these were the strikes and these were the things which happened.  At the end of it all, this young boy, must be about 14, 15, asked me, he said, “when you were in school did we have Racial Harmony Day?” I said “No, when I was in school on that day, one year, we had a riot, and that’s why we have Racial Harmony Day.”

PM Lee basically gave this kid the social studies lesson you always wished you had in ONE SENTENCE. Boss.

5. On how to tell someone is Singaporean when overseas

“If you see somebody overseas, whether he’s Indian or Malay or Chinese or Eurasian, you look at him carefully, you can tell that he is Singaporean, something about him.”

“Usually the quality of clothes.” — Dr Zakaria

“Or, maybe the way they go around looking for food.”

Source

Awwww, he knows us so well. What a bro.

6. On the possibility of an ISIS attack on Singapore

pm lee quotes 6Source

“I will have a very big problem. Not just because of a few people may be killed, but because of the suspicions and the enmities and the unspoken fears which will be created instantly and which will show in people’s conduct, in their interactions with one another, in the way fear generates fear and people separate out and you are not quite one society again.”

How heartening it is to see his compassion for the cohesion Singaporeans enjoy as a luxury today.

7. On China’s diplomatic relationship with Singapore

pm lee quotes 7Source

“[A Chinese the PM had a conversation with] said we have great respect for Singapore and from time to time our polices don’t agree and you take views which are different from ours but nevertheless on a personal point of view we have great respect for you and your system.  I said vice versa too, because it works both ways, it has to be. We are a country, you are a country, you have your interests and your calculations.”

This is the reason why Singapore is buds with lots of countries.

8. On staying on as Prime Minister in future

pm lee quotes 8Source

“I strongly prefer not to.  This is a job which needs a young man, people with energy, people who will be there and can connect with young people and will fight the battles with the young people, not for five or ten years, but for 20, 30 , 40 years to come and you need somebody of that generation.”

Well, we’re looking forward to ten times more selfies after you retire, sir.

9. On the surprising success that Singapore might have decades from now

“Well first, you want to be lucky. You don’t want to have a war, you want to have the possibility to have a fighting chance and you want to be able to prove what you can do. If 30 years from now, we can still be prospering, still be united and still have that drive to do better, then I think we have done very well.”

pm lee quotes 9Source

C’mon people. Let’s be who our PM wants us to be as a sweet SG50 present.

Doesn’t this make you wanna leave an appreciation post on his Facebook page?

Hanging garlands onto the PM is too old school.

To show our PM some love, go like one of his selfies. But don’t forget to be the badass Singaporean he wants you to be.

For the full transcript of PM Lee’s badass-ness during this dialogue, click here.

10 Hidden Facts About Singapore Botanic Gardens You Never Knew About

Singapore receives perfect Jubilee gift

Singapore Botanic Gardens was confirmed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4 July at the 39th meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Singapore’s Botanical Gardens is the third Botanic Gardens to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after Kew Gardens in England and the Padua Gardens in Italy. It is also the first Asian tropical botanic gardens to be on the list.

THIS!Source

The 156 year old Singapore Botanical Gardens is filled with cultural, historical, and architectural significance to Singapore.

In commemoration of the Garden’s listing as a UNESCO site, we have trawled the net for 10 things you may have not known about our gardens:

1. Our 5-dollar note Tembusu tree is located here

The Tembusu tree on the back of our 5-dollar note is not just an artist’s illustration, but based on an actual living tree. The tree is located near the Tanglin entrance of the Botanic Gardens, and is believed to have existed long before the gardens were officially laid out in 1859.

The tree is almost two centuries old!

2.  Singapore’s oldest ornamental water feature

The Swan Lake was constructed in 1866, shortly after the Gardens formation. It is considered to be the oldest ornamental water-feature in Singapore.

The lake is home to numerous species of aquatic plants and fishes while it covers an area of slightly less than 1.5 hectares, with a depth of approximately 4 metres. The Swan Lake is named as such because of the pair of beautiful mute swans from Amsterdam that call the lake home.

3. The hidden pathway

There are plenty of historic features in the Gardens but many visitors are probably unaware of the feature known as ‘the Dell’. The path dates back to 1882 and was originally designed to cultivate and showcase ferns. The Dell has experienced a few modifications over the years and visitors can find concentrically-curved paths, a series of irregular rockeries and a variety of plants.

Visitors to The Dell will be rewarded with shady paths leading through lush vegetation and interesting water features.

4. A popular hotspot for music in the 1930s

The octagonal gazebo known as the Bandstand was built in 1930 and retained its original form over the years. The Bandstand site was initially just a small hill that stood at 33 m above sea level, and was the highest point on the Tanglin Core site.

In 1860s, the hill was levelled off for regimental bands to perform, surrounded by terraced flower beds and palms. Although the Bandstand is no longer used for music performances, it is a favourite wedding photo spot and an iconic landmark of the Gardens.

5. Our mini rainforest

The six-hectare rainforest is home to over 300 species and consists of primary tropical forest, forming a multi-layered ecosystem of herbs and ferns, climbers, shrubs, and trees. Some trees reach 50 metres in height, and were here even before the founding of modern Singapore in 1819!

The Rain Forest have trees of economic values found among the rich species of plantations. More than half of species found in here are considered rare in Singapore, which qualifies as a part of Singapore’s natural heritage.

 6.  Orchid Garden for VIP and Celebrities

The National Orchid Gardens have named over 200 VIP and celebrities orchids up to date. Examples of celebrities orchids on display includes Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, popular Korean actor Bae Yong Joon, wildlife warrior Bindi Irwin, and Bollywood veteran Shah Rukh Khan.

Most recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton were presented the Papilionanda William Catherine orchid hybrid on their visit in 2014. This garden is also lauded as the world’s largest orchid display features over 60,000 plants and orchids.

7. Free evening concert

Head down to Singapore Botanic Gardens with your family and friends for a relaxing evening. You will be able to enjoy a free evening concert with the touch of nature along.

Bring your picnic blankets along for comfort, and pack some finger food while listening to the great music. Wine is optional, but don’t make a fool of yourself by being too drunk.

There are many different types of performances to be featured on Singapore Botanical Gardens. Some feature classical performances, and others have performing arts in store for the audience. The concerts are diverse, and the quality is excellent.

8. History of Singapore Botanic Gardens

The colonial government granted 32 hectares of land in Tanglin to Agri Horticultural Society in 1859. This land was obtained it from the merchant Hoo Ah Kay, known as Whampoa, in exchange for land at Boat Quay. This agreement between the two had allowed the Singapore Botanic Gardens to be found at its present site.

The Gardens were used as a part of a long colonial tradition of creating a European-style botanical gardens in the tropics. It was used to study native plants, useful or revenue-earning crops and ornamental plant cultivation.

Within the Gardens, there are buildings that showcase the historical development of residential architecture of Singapore.

9. Singapore Botanic Gardens Heritage Museum

The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) Heritage Museum is located  Holttum Hall, a URA conservation building. The Museum is located beside the Botany Centre at the Tanglin Core.

Built in 1921, the building has served Garden’s Directors from 1925 to 1949. This is where Professor Eric Holttum, the Garden’s Director, developed unique orchid breeding techniques.

The SBG Heritage Museum features interactive and multimedia exhibits and panels that detail the Gardens’ rich heritage. Historical items that are displayed date back to the early 19th century. The displayed includes of old photographs, plant specimens, rare botanical books and botanical paintings. Oral recordings of Ridley during his 100th birthday is on interactive display for the public.

10. Expansion of this jewel gem

According to the National Parks Board (NParks), Singapore Botanic Gardens will more than tripled in size after its expansion.  This additional development of the gardens will create additional habitats for native wildlife. The expansion is also to ensure that it will remain a beautiful landmark for the generation to come.

The expansion is being targeted for completion in 2016 after one year of delay when originally it was supposed to be done in 2015. The delay was related to a stormwater detention pond under a car park at the extension.

Botanic Gardens ExpansionSource

Not just a tiny red dot afterall

The significant beauty of the gardens has reflected about Singaporeans heritage, identity, and place in the world.

It is uncommon for a small country such as Singapore to be able to achieve the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The heritage and diversity that allowed Singapore Botanic Gardens to clinch the award is a call for celebration.

Singaporeans should be proud that we are able to achieve this prestigious title. We should celebrate the heritage and the diversity that allowed Singapore Botanic Gardens to clinch the award.

7 teasers of LTA’s chio-est Christmas gift to us ever

You’ve probably heard the news about the Downtown Line 2’s early grand entrance in December this year.

That alone pushed me to scribble this onto my To-Do list: wish Lui Tuck Yew ‘Merry Christmas, I’m having a Speedy New Year’ on his Facebook wall.

Then I casually scrolled through Land Transport Authority (LTA)’s Facebook Page today (7 July), and to my delight, found some stuff that immediately teleported the Transport Minister onto my list of People To Jio To My Christmas Party.

What stuff?

DTL 2 (1)Source

Stuff that kinda makes you wanna whine less about train delays.

Stuff that entices the brave butts that endured those painful long bus rides from Upper Bukit Timah to Orchard.

Stuff a kaypoh’s dreams are made of.

Here’s what I found:

1. Cashew Station

DTL 2 (2)Source

According to LTA’s Facebook post, Cashew is 95% ready to welcome what Singapore is famous for: crowded MRT stations.

2. Hillview Station

DTL 2 (3)Source

This new purple themed station is every Hillviewer’s heaven, since those living at HILLview know what an upHILL task it is to get to the main road and to town.

3. Beauty World Station

DTL 2 (4)Source

Residents living near Beauty World have to contend with the fact that Bukit Batok is the nearest train station to their house. Bukit Batok isn’t even near Beauty World, so this squiggly line station is definitely a relief for these peeps.

Also, check out how badass Beauty World looks on the outside:

4. Tan Kah Kee Station

DTL 2 (6)Source

I wonder if the walls are purposely yellow to complement the mustard uniform wearing Hwachies who will be spamming train rides home from here.

5. Newton Station

DTL 2 (7)Source

It’s gonna take awhile getting used to Newton Station looking this fresh. I can’t count the number of times the old and stuffy North South line station made me want to go home and crash when I had to mug for papers.

6. Little India Station

DTL 2 (8)Source

That’s some pretty neat artwork going on there. A worthy competitor against Botanic Gardens station!

7. Rochor Station

DTL 2 (9)Source

Anyone else feel like hopping on a train at this station will take you to 2020?

Stay tuned

Photos of the other 5 stations on the Downtown Line 2 aren’t out yet.

But don’t worry. MustShareNews.com will be there to share them when the photos are finally released, just to save you the hassle of plotting a secret plan to sneak into the stations at night when you can no longer resist.

Quah Zheng Wen Is So Pro, He Has Officially Been Deferred From NS

Zheng Wen joins Schooling in getting their game on for Rio 2016

It’s official.

MINDEF just gave Team Singapore swimmer Quah Zheng Wen the thumbs up to be a swimmer instead of a soldier.

We imagine his reaction to be something along the lines of:

quah zheng wen nsSource

Let’s watch that again in some sweet, zoomed in, slow-mo action:

quah zheng wen ns 1Source

Why the thumbs up?

Sorry if this comes as a duh to you, but hey, I like to get all cheem about why I fan girl what I fan girl.

Anyway, the upwards thumbs are because Zheng Wen tops every Singaporean’s list of ‘Athletes To Fangirl/boy Because Abs They’re Just So Good’.

Members of the prestigious club also include Joseph Schooling (BAE <3 <3 <3 <3 <3), whose application was a success in 2013.

And he knows this.

That’s why the record holder of most SEA Games medals didn’t hesitate to send in a NS deferment application, which has been reviewed by the Armed Forces Council (AFC) and chaired by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.

This is what MINDEF said in a statement about Zheng Wen’s application:

“Mr Quah has satisfied the conditions for deferment of exceptional sportsmen who can win honour for Singapore, as his recent performances were better than the most recent Olympic Games’ qualifying times in the 200m Butterfly.”

quah zheng wen ns 2Source

Boss.

Not a ‘No Strings Attached’ matter

The sweet deal does come with conditions and an expiry date, however.

Abs guy Zheng Wen will still have to shave bald, march 24 km and sing cringey army songs, starting 31 August next year.

And he has has to have his eyes on this prize:

quah zheng wen ns 4Source

In fact, that’s how Zheng Wen won over MINDEF — by stating in his application that he basically wants to train hard enough to become a beast at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janerio.

And why wouldn’t he?

The only thing that’s really stopping him is Joseph Schooling’s beast-ness.

We can’t wait to see what this young man has in store for the Rio Olympics.

Also, call me maybe? *wink*

NSL Will Not Be Closed From 11am To 4pm After All, But Transport Minister Warns To Expect More Delays

No Power Trip In SMRT Trains Observed This Morning

Last night (7 July), Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) train services along the North-South Line and the East-West Line unprecedentedly broke down together simultaneously.

Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew expressed his concern about the breakdown of two major train service lines.

On a Facebook post, he assured commuters that engineers from SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) would work throughout the night to ensure that train services will run smoothly today (8 July).

Things are looking good so far

Initial plans to suspend train services at the North-South Line from 11am to 4pm today were cancelled.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had earlier urged commuters to adjust their travel plans or take alternative routes via bus services or unaffected train service lines.

It turns out, however, that there will be no suspension of services after all; no anomalies were observed since train services resumed along the problematic lines this morning.

Free bus services and free train rides will also be halted by 12 noon today — the train services may finally be running as per normal.

No Committee of Inquiry needed, confirmed Minister Lui

Earlier this morning, Minister Lui clarified in the interview that there will be no plans to call for a Committee of Inquiry (COI) with regards to the breakdown of train services, and he also dropped a warning that investigations will take a few days.

He asserted that it will be more useful for SMRT and the LTA to concentrate on finding the “definitive cause” of the unprecedented service breakdown.

If we can find it (the definitive cause), we can take the necessary corrective actions and let commuters have a peace of mind knowing we have resolved the faults that caused the disruption

- Minister Lui Tuck Yew

Preliminary Investigation results shows wires may be blamed

In an interview with The Straits Times, Minister Lui explained that preliminary investigation shows that the breakdown of the train service lines may be down to a faulty train or a couple of wires.

There was a train that experienced arching (electrical spark), we will have to drill down further to see if this is the only cause or if it contributed to the incident

During checks on Tuesday night SMRT also found a couple of wires that they had to change. This was around the Bishan area but we do not know if it was the cause.

- Minister Lui Tuck Yew

We really doubt that a train or a couple of wires is actually capable of causing such a massive train disruption.

But, let’s just leave it to Minister Lui and his engineers to conduct their investigation before we start pointing fingers.

Here is a video of the interview with Minister Lui Tuck Yew, courtesy of The Straits Times

There is still no confirmation that normal services has officially resumed

There are several positive signs —

–  The North-South Line suspension from 11am-4pm is called off.

– Free bus and train services will end by 12 noon today.

We have yet to receive any official confirmation that trains on the affected lines (North South Lines and East West Lines) is back to normal. Let’s just wait for the official confirmation and for the investigation report.

Meanwhile, this is just another monotonous Wednesday at work for most of us.

The Great MRT Breakdown: Our Reporter Recounts His Experience

MRT breakdowns led to a living nightmare

Last night (7 July), trains across the North-South and East-West Line (NSEWL) shuddered to a halt during the evening peak hour.

I received the news of the MRT breakdown while breaking my fast. I was at the Geylang night market with my family to buy new decor in preparation for Hari Raya when the news on SMRT’s Facebook page popped up on my feed.

SMRT Announcement for breakdownSource

My family and I headed home at approximately at 8.15pm after shopping.

Having failed to procure a taxi after 15 minutes of waiting, we decided to catch a train instead. What we saw at Paya Lebar MRT Station was pure chaos. The commotion caused by commuters affected by the disruption left us in shock.

Scene at Paya Lebar MRTSource

Helpful SMRT staffs

Like a horde of lost zombies, confused commuters wandered around the station looking for assistance from SMRT staff. Many were dumbfounded and lost as they were forced to alight before their destination. They were trying to figure out the best way to reach home as quickly as possible.

SMRT staff were helpful in assisting the public with their queries. They handled the situation in a calm and professional manner. I was led to the right direction by friendly a SMRT staff that was still able to answer with a gracious smile.

Stranded commuters on MRT Circle Line

We abandoned hope of getting on the train, opting instead to take the Circle Line and try our luck at hailing a taxi from Bishan. The relative peace and tranquility compared to the chaos three floors up was a surprise. There were few commuters at the platforms and aboard the train. I thanked my lucky stars.

Thank GOD Gif
Source

At Bishan, however, we were greeted with a sea of commuters. Limbs and arms were everywhere and I suddenly wondered how sardines felt inside a can. We inched our way across Bishan Station, narrowly avoiding stray plastic bags and laptop sleeves.

move out of the way GIFSource

Difficulties to get on taxi and bus

Once outside Bishan Station, we received news that there were free buses running toward Woodlands, where I stay. Being typical kiasu Singaporeans, my family decided to take the free ride instead of wasting our money. The entire situation outside was much more insane than expected.

There were commuters jam-packed on the bus stops and on the road. The free buses were delayed, and filled by the time they arrived anyway, rendering the wait fruitless.

Police officers had to regulate the commuters with the boarding of the buses and also control the crowd.

Outside Bishan Mrt station
Source

Frustrated with the situation, we decided to try and get a taxi to reach home. Each family member was on our hand phones using different apps to book taxis in hopes of securing a ride home.

Taxi booking apps were clearly overworked with requests, as our booking attempts failed continously.

Almost half an hour of trying, a booking finally went through, and our ordeal was seemingly over.

FINALLY GIF!
Source

Home sweet home

I was able to reach home at 11pm after the nightmare experience of MRT breakdown. The entire journey took 3 hours to reach home. It would usually take 40 minutes from the Geylang night market to home via taxi.

The longer than expected journey that was tiring for most of us. It was frustrating that for the MRT to not be working, especially during peak periods. Many that were affected by the breakdowns are working adults who were making their way home.

I am just thankful that I was able to make it home and survived through this ordeal. It is indeed a frightful experience for the commuters in Singapore. Let’s hope that SMRT have find the cause of the MRT breakdown soon.

Because complaining about the breakdown is too mainstream

So, yesterday (7 July) we experienced the worst MRT breakdown in history.

A shut down of power plagued ALL North South and East West Line commuters which, in my terms, means about 250,000 moody after-work faces became even moodier after-work faces.

That’s a lot of people.

The 250,000 valiant, brave souls of 7/7 had to endure this (when SMRT started offering free bus rides):
